From my perspective, Le Corbusier bounces back and forth between brilliance and stupidity. He poses excellent questions and makes stunning points, then answers himself with some of the most outrageous and idiotic declarations in history. This book should be on every architect's "must" list, but even those with a general interest might share my wild swings of reaction to his nearly psychotic delusions and keen perceptions. I can almost guarantee he would not have been welcome in my home! But at the same time, his book most certainly is.I laughed, I cried, I wanted to throw the book against the wall and jumped up yelling, "Yes! Yes!" A cross between Mein Kampf and Walden, with a little Dickens and Tolkein thrown in. Wierd, wonderful, and depressing all rolled into one.

Bought this as a gift, there was an issue with shipping and I ended up buying it in a book store, but the Architect in my life loved it. He said it was a great way to look at architecture from a different perspective.

Now, having read this book, I see. Examples of the evolution of his thoughts on architecture are everywhere. He also seemed to have some influence on modern building standards and made some predictions on on housing which have come to pass, some with good results and some not so good. I believe I read about an idea that was the precursor to the timeshare condo. (Blech) ! What an incredible influence. Not a particularly great read but one I am glad I experienced and will not forget.

Le Corbusier is one of Architecture's famous intellectuals. He is to Architecture what Albert Einstein was to Physics. Highly recommend if your in Arch. School or even just some light reading after work. It shows how differently he thought about things at the time and why his points were actually thoughtful of the time period.

Everyone knows Corbu is a legendary in architecture. this is the most famous book by him and therefore is a MUST for architecture students and architects. Vers Une Architecture!!!!!! Thanks Corb

I tore through my copy of Big is Beautiful over the course of a day. It is intelligent, lucid, and very convincing. While it has become a commonplace to celebrate the virtues of small business, these paeans neglect the fact that successful business enterprises that achieve meaningful scale have long been the chief driver of productivity gains, not mom and pops. Corporate giants develop innovative business models, create entirely new product categories, and raise labor standards in entire sectors. Atkinson and Lind aren't cheerleaders: they acknowledge that rent-seeking businesses come in all sizes, and that there are pathologies of bigness. Yet they do an excellent job of distilling how modern market economies achieve durable productivity growth, and it's not by stunting the growth of new firms. I particularly enjoyed the concluding section, which offers a brilliant typology for understanding contemporary political economy debates: beyond left and right, these debates involve global libertarians, global neoliberals, progressive localists, national protectionists, and national developmentalists. This part of the book is worth the price of admission.

A very important book, because politicians on both sides pander to the popular notion that small business is inherently wonderful while big business is evil. They say things like "small businesses accounts for X% of all new jobs," but don't tell you they also account for most jobs lost. And new jobs pay less than old jobs - which most of us have with BIG companies An eye-opening exercise is debunking that is long overdue.

An incredibly important and broad treatise exploding several myths and current wisdom on the societal and economic value of our largest companies. This well researched book covers almost every angle and should shakeup the view that big is evil and small is wonderful. As the authors repeatedly prove, small is sometimes wonderful (by contributing valuable innovation, although not necessarily jobs). But big, across countries, is better at almost every measure of job creation, salaries, benefits and economic contributions. A must read on dispelling a myth that too many people simply assume is accurate.

Highly reccomend this book after reading land of promise by michael lind. Its solid, nonpartisan, historical, and above all hopeful in this dark nd uninformed age.

I like that this was a easy to understand book about policies and their historical and current effect on big and small businesses alike. I wish I had of read this before taking macro or micro econ.

I highly recommend "Big is Beautiful" by Robert Atkinson and Michael Lind. This is a book that goes against the grain and that's the reason the authors should be commended. Politics is full with hatred of the big - big government, big business, big green, big labor and big technology. I guess many won't like the book because it's contrary to what they hear all of the time. The authors tell us why we should value the big in terms of high wages, the environment, worker safety and other points. The book features cold and hard facts and that's what I like so much about it. It also takes on the arguments often spouted by advocates of small business romanticism.Will this book help us snap out of the small is beautiful, Jeffersonian ideas that have influenced our political system since the 1970's? I hope that it does. However, we'll have to wait and see.

One of the reviews here noted that the book has numerous typos. No surprise. The book's shallow approach to editing reflects its similarly shallow approach to facts and analysis. Throughout, the authors present straw man arguments against which to rail, such as that critics of monopoly would have us all return to being farmers. In fact, critics of bigness have a much more nuanced and thorough methodology. Atkinson and Lind, though, rely on enticing little cherries they have picked--cherries that sound convincing if you're not willing to really examine data.Just one example: They present statistics on wages purportedly showing that large companies pay more. But for this they use data on "establishments", rather than firms. The category of establishments include all the chain outlets of the largest companies. And, yeah, those chains pay their workers a pittance, so if you include them as small businesses, then you're going to get numbers that make it look like "large" companies pay more. In fact, using data that accurately separates businesses according to size, there is a much smaller gap. And that gap then pretty much disappears when you include the key fact that executive salaries skew the data towards higher salaries from big companies. (In the lower half of the bracket? You'll do better at a small company.)Other fact-challenged argumentation in the book includes their claim that the insane broadband fees you pay are actually reasonable, because, um, the US is the "second-least densely populated" nation, and we need to create, like, really wide networks. First, we are not even close to being in the top ten least densely populated. And it's actually in rural areas of the US where you get lower broadband rates, mostly because of *small* locally or regionally-owned community broadband.The authors also like to whine about the existence of some regulatory help and loan programs for small businesses, while ignoring the overwhelming trend of business (de)regulation since the 1990s, which has continually favored large corporations and monopoly power. No doubt this book will get plenty of play here, but readers would be well advised to go and research the reality of monopoly power and how it negatively impacts wages, jobs, and quality of life. The authors probably hope you won't do that.

I bought this book as part of a baptism gift for one of my nieces. I read all the stories in it before gifting it. Only 1 really did not seem suitable for a child as it suggests a fake suicide to be able to get what the character wants. The book is sturdy and very colorful. As I am not Iirish and did not grow up hearing any Irish tales, I do not know if it is a good representation of Irish lore or not.

I bought this book as a gift for my son, whose father is from Ireland. My husband was pleased with the tales and remembered them as a youth in Ireland. However, the illustrations are what make this book special. You will not be disappointed. It's a great book! Plus, it features a glossary on how to pronounce the Irish words, names.

Books were tiny not the size of a regular book was very disappointed. The tales are great but the book too small like for a doll.

I would give this 5 stars if it had more stories. It's a short book. I expected more for the price but what's in it is wonderful. We love this book. It's beautiful

Pictures are nice, but more stories could have been included.

I found this book a great re-telling of these Irish stories in a concise manner suitable for even very young kids

Fun little bed time book!

Bummer--the nutrition values above the recipes seem to be incorrect. I was all excited to try the sweet potato pancakes mentioned on the cover, only to gasp at the 287g of carbs listed in the nutrition information. Using My Fitness Pal data, I added the carbs for all the ingredients and divided by 4 (there are 4 servings) and learned that it should be 31g of carbs per serving instead. That's more like it! Now I can try the recipe, but have no confidence in the nutrition information in the rest of the book. Isn't that why one would buy it--to calculate what is appropriate to eat each day? It's by fudging my data that I've sneaked into pre diabetic status in the first place!

after the shock of being diagnosed as pre diabetic, this book was a life saver both mentally and physically. I could eat a lot of foods that I thought would be forbidden. recipe directions are straight forward therefore basically quick to put together. I will be using this book a lot!

I bought this book because my doctor at the time said I was pre-diabetic. Well that scared me straight to stop eating candy and apple pie . I was on a binge that month so when I went back I was not on the border line page. so just to be on the safe side I needed to know more this is mainly a cook book a thick one at that. It does have some basic information on how to read food labels, figure out carbohydrate and sugar grams, explains cholesterol, and fiber and whole grains etc.

Since I was just diagnosed I have been looking for a book just like this one. Clear, honest with a mix of valuable information as well as the recipes.

Sent this one back. Some of the carb calculations are just plain wrong. Paper was like newsprint.

I hadn’t studied much biology since my college days 50 years ago, so this exciting book was a real eye opener. How did life actually get going on earth? Why did it take a couple of billion years before all higher forms of life got their start, and how are mitochondria the key? Why would most life in other parts of the universe likely not get beyond the level of bacteria? What do mitochondria have to do with aging, and how do we age more slowly than rats but faster than birds?Renowned British scientist and author Nick Lane explores all these questions and many more, explaining the latest research, controversies, and speculations. Lane does a very good job of explaining the basic findings and arguments to educated readers who are not trained in biology but are keen to understand what’s going on inside the life they see all around and experience in their own bodies.My interests had been more in the physical and mathematical sciences, but there’s nothing like encounters with aging that will say “Whoa – What’s Going On Here?”, especially when your doctor says, “Don’t worry, that’s just normal aging”. A heart attack, a detached retina, loss of balance – “just normal aging” - SURE! It’s like a SYNDROME, a name for something they don’t understand or can’t do much about. Or could they? - if they thought more like curious scientists exploring the universe and less like authorities stuck in the ruts of past dogmas.So Lane explains why all the anti-oxidant therapies in the world have failed to extend our life spans, despite the destruction wrecked by free radicals on mitochondrial DNA. Yet birds, with only a few changes to their DNA, avoid most of this damage and live disease-free to ripe old ages (relative to their body size). There is even a group of humans in Italy who live to 100 quite easily due to a simple genetic mutation. He identifies “uncoupling” as the possible mechanism as it causes the “respiration chain” in mitochondria to produce heat instead of free radicals when the mitochondria is at rest (not producing ATP to power the cell). The implication is that there may be better prospects for gene therapies than drug therapies in our future (at least if humanity somehow manages to survive the wrath of Gaia against the wanton destruction of a civilization drunk on fossil fuels).

Fascinating book about the evolution of cells and the role of mitochondria in allowing large eukaryote cells and multi-cellular organisms. Extremely clear descriptions of how things work, and an excellent framework for understanding issues in evolution, how sex in single-celled eukaryotes led to apoptosis in multi-cellular organisms, issues in tracking evolution using maternal mitochondrial DNA, why Aubrey de Gray's suggestion that we move mitochondrial DNA into our cell's nucleus as part of an anti-aging protocol won't work (when we can do the in-vivo gene manipulation), and how cells use reactive oxygen species as signals.The book explains a number of things I've wondered about:(1) Why does a mother's environment affect the children of her daughters? It's because the unit of growth is the cell, not just DNA, and the daughter's eggs are formed in-utero. So if the mother is stressed nutritionally early in the pregnancy, it affects her daughter's children by reducing the robustness of her daughter's eggs.(2) Why don't antioxidants increase longevity? It's because the cell uses ROS as a signal for proteins needed by the mitochondria and to grow more mitochondria, and needs a finely tuned level of internal anti-oxidant machinery in order to hear the signal, yet not be damaged by it. So taking extra Vitamin C or E reduce the internal signaling, and might cause premature apoptosis of the cell because it degrades the health of your mitochondria. This ties into studies showing that Vit C and/or E reduce the benefits of exercise, by shutting down the internal ROS signaling pathways.(3) How can we improve our own longevity? It looks like the major factor is the rate of leakage of ROS from mitochondria. So things that reduce this leakage make a big difference: (a) where possible, have your cells run on fat instead of glucose, because that reduces free electron leak from complex I, and (b) make sure you have balanced levels of omega-6 and omega-3 PUFA, as that appears to also make a significant difference (at least in mice...)There is much more, and I have a much better framework now for my research on how to optimize my health. Highly recommended!Two other books in the same class are The Fourth Phase of Water: Beyond Solid, Liquid, and Vapor, and Cells, Gels and the Engines of Life.

I cannot exprese the gratitude I feel towards Nick Lane after reading this book. This is the best science book I've ever read in my life. (I'd like to study biology but don't have the means to)Everything: The format the book is written (it's divided in small sub chapters that you can read very quickly if you don't have time, i.e. in the morning instead of a newspaper article), the way Lane explains concepts (I even learned basic biology ideas I was never able to grasp), the way he presents the ideas itself...Power, Sex, Suicide gives me the same sense of awe and admiration that Cosmos gave me the first time I saw it. I'd really wish Lane was as famous as Sagan in terms of popularizing science.He (Lane) even presents ideas he doesn't agree with, which I really loved.I'm looking forward to buying Oxygen and of course as you can see now I'm a really huge, huge Lane's fan.

This book is a little hard to understand in places. I skip over paragraphs now and then. The subject is fascinating though.
