I love this book. I read many books each year, some non-fiction, some fiction, some about science and the environment, some political and some historical, you get the picture. It doesn’t matter how you label this book, it’s a good read. It’s one of those books, not unlike Maeve Binchy’s books, where you can get lost in the story, in the characters and in the locale. I’m not going to repeat the story line here, you can catch that in the other reviews. What I’m going to share with you is that I like this author’s development of her characters. As you read through the book you learn more about each of the characters and how they come to interact. Most importantly you get to experience with Hanna, not only her growth in her relationships with her family, but also her integration into the community. For many of us community matters, and we all have roles to play in making our communities successful. You’ll walk along with these characters as they move through the series, and become engaged with them as they become involved in their community.The author transports us to a small community on Ireland’s West Coast. She does an excellent job. I swear I can see the places she’s writing about, smell the ocean, hear the birds and feel the wind. This is a gift, to transport the reader away from the stress of our day to another community, even if that community exists only in our mind.I fail to understand how the other reviewers found this book “mundane and boringâ€, and “the same old story told and retold.†What story is being retold? A character grows. That hopefully happens in all books. As for mundane and boring, I have no idea what they were looking for, if it was death and mayhem then they should have looked elsewhere. This book and series is a delight. Well written. Good character development. And a mental vacation. What more could I ask for? I received an advance copy to read but then purchased three copies to give as Christmas gifts. And no, no discounts. I like this book. Grab a cup of tea or coffee, snuggle up with a blanket and start reading. You’ll enjoy it.
I loved this novel. The plot and characters reminded me a bit of Maeve Binchy, which is a huge compliment. There is more than enough violence and sadness in the world. It's essential to escape that with a good book that has a happy ending. And I love anything to do with Ireland. After I read the author's autobiographical account of buying a house in Ireland, I had to read this. I eagerly await more from Felicity Hayes-McCoy.
Hanna lives with her mother on the outskirts of a town in Ireland. She has left her husband, after discovering he was cheating on her, and they are both very unhappy with the situation. Her daughter, Jazz has a job with an airline company, and Hanna supports her decision, the ex husband thinks she's frittering her life away. Hanna has a job at the library, which entails driving a mobile van around the area. She decides that she will fix up a house that she has been left by a great aunt long ago, and slowly her outlook on life changes.The story was not what I expected it to be. There are politics and nuns, and young people giving up everything for a chance to help their family. And the builder she brings on to help her make the house liveable, Fury are downright strange. I like that the book has a hint of romance, but that is far from the focus. A good book that leaves you satisfied.
In her writing, Felicity Hayes-McCoy makes the west of Ireland come alive. The characters are well developed and the story has a wonderful ending. I was so pleased Ms. Hayes-McCoy brought forward a novel after writing "House on an Irish Hillside". She leaves you wanting to visit this magical, beautiful part of the world. Can't recommend her work highly enough!
This is a great book that demonstrates the importance of personal relationships and community. The protagonist learns to see her life from a different perspective, while turning reluctant aquaintances into friends and changing the direction of her small town for the better.
I have always dreamed of finding a piece of property with a view of water and a tumbledown shack to rebuild into a snug hideaway. This book fed that dream.The character Hanna is smart, caring, short tempered and stubborn. Her strengths and her flaws are largely a result of being raised by a mother who is jealous and conniving and a father who put his role as husband before that of father.While the plot was largely predictable, the descriptions of western Ireland were lovely and made me want to visit. The author captures small town rural life very well. Young people are torn between leaving to find fulfilling employment or staying in a place that they love. Older people are in each other’s business and lives while mostly ignoring the politics that impact them.The book was sort of a “cozy†- comforting and easy to read.
When Hanna returns home to the south western peninsula of Ireland to start over she wants a life that she can be proud of. With a degree in art history her only choice for a job is at the local library where she meets many colorful locals. At first she and her sixteen year of daughter live with Hanna's mother Mary who is critical and negative. When her daughter leaves into a life of her own Hanna's moves to a cottage left to her by her father's aunt. After getting a loan to rehab the cottage she finds out that the county plans to close the library leaving Hanna without a job and the locals, especially the seniors without a place to socialize. Fate steps in and Hanna pulls strength from the reserve that she didn't know she had and she with the help of the locals finds a reason why the county cannot do as they plan.
Since I visited Ireland I have read several books with that setting. I can identify with the description of the villages and countryside. In this book, some of the characters are a bit predictable but fit the plot and setting well. The book is a light, fun read.
