This is a fantastic book for both beginners and experts alike who want to step up their glassblowing skills. While this is written for scientific glassblowing (Mr. Le Pinnet is, after all, a scientific glassblower) anyone working in lamp working skills will benefit from the details instructions he provides.Another individual who will benefit from this book is the researcher who depends up a glassblower for their tools. The reason is that many researchers know their chemistry extremely well but do not know the dynamics of the material with which they work with. By following along in this book they will gain a better understanding of the glass upon which they depend upon so much.With many photographs (some in color), the reader will easily be guided to the best visual description I've seen in a glassblowing manual. In fact, the only thing better than this book would be Mr. Le Pinnet standing by your side guiding you on in your work.I heartily recommend this book.

The plot of Anna Quindlen's novel Blessings is constructed on the same model as E.T.: adorable orphaned creature is found by unlikely caregiver who against his or her better judgment falls in love with the little beast, while all the while, the authorities loom in the background, threatening to take the foundling away. In Quindlen's book, however, the foundling in question isn't an alien, but a squalling baby left at Blessings, a vast estate owned by an ancient, crabby matriarch named Lydia Blessing. By a fluke, the baby's parents abandon her by the garage rather than at the front door, and so she is discovered by Skip Cuddy, Lydia Blessing's newly hired handyman, who happens to be an ex-con. The plot proceeds from there in fairly E.T.-like fashion, minus the Reese's Pieces and flying bicycles. Skip, Lydia, and the baby they name Faith form a surprisingly loving and sustaining, albeit temporary, family unit. Quindlen wrings a remarkable amount of pathos from this somewhat simple setup. One of her strengths as a writer is the quietness she brings to her story; family secrets of paternity and lost love are buried deep in the narrative, hidden in descriptive paragraphs where they subtly zing us with their news. Her ear is good, too: we believe Skip and his bad-boy friends when they're shooting the breeze. Best of all is her flair for observation. The book wouldn't work at all if she couldn't make us feel Skip and Lydia's amazement at the small joys of a baby ("The deep pleat in the fat at her elbow made her arms look muscled"). This is a review of Blessings by Belva Plain. In glancing through other reader reviews, most of them appear to be about a book with the same title written by Anna Quindlan. The book begins with Jennie Rakowsky and Jay Wolfe are going to be married. He is an attorney, a widower with three small children. She is also an attorney defending and helping abused women and children. Jay Wolfe comes from a traditional upper class family with very definite standards. Jennie was raised by poor parents, holocaust survivors who immigrated to the USA.Jennie has been convinced by Jay and his parents to defend the Green Marsh a natural wet land and lake near where Jay's parents live, against developers who want to build condominiums and the land.When Jennie was 17 going to college she met Peter Mendes, 18, whose parents are very traditional wealthy, stiff-necked, people, snobs. Jennie and Peter fall in love and she becomes pregnant. She ends up at a home for unwed mothers and gives their daughter up for adoption.Jennie has not told Jay or his parents about her daughter, Jill Miller, 19, who appears unexpectedly at her door wanting to get to know her mother and father. Jennie is terrified and does not want to have anything to do with Jill. Jill's father also shows up.Jay finds out about Jill, Peter, and the relationship with Jennie breaks up. Jay feels he cannot trust Jennie because of her hidden past.This is a very entertaining story, which I rate along with Daybreak and Whispers, also written by Belva Plain. It is a keeper and I highly recommend it.

This is one of the best books I've read in a while. I have a fairly high standard -- after all, what could possibly beat "To Kill a Mockingbird"? Blessings is full of wonderful, complex characters yet retains a soft edge.

After a few starts and stops, I finally gave my full attention to Anna Quindlen's Blessings and was determined to finish. Although the beginning failed to hook me, once I reached the meat of the story, there was no turning back. A story of an elderly woman, a convicted felon, and an aspiring young doctor whose lives all come together as a result of the unexpected appearance of a child.The setting of the novel, Blessings, a rural family retreat, is not only idyllic in location, but also a domicile of familial dysfunction, both past and present. Through careful unveiling, Quindlen highlights the tragedy associated with truths withheld over generations.What was refreshing was the life, revitalization, and perspective of the female protagonist, Lydia. While philosophizing about life itself, she explains the tragedy of young death, the shock of middle-age death, and the inevitability of elderly death, how herstory, in essence, revolves around the loss of others. In addition, kudos to Quindlen for allowing the younger male and female in the novel to have meaningful interaction without the presence of romance.For the purposes of book club, a picnic lunch near a creek much like Lydia shared with Benny and Sunny as adolescents complete with bacon sandwiches, peanut butter cookies, and a big Ball jar of lemonade may be the perfect conversation starter.

This is such a beautiful story. I could not put this book down so I stayed up and read it from cover to cover.The story begins with a baby being abandoned late one night by a teenage girl and the father of the baby. The baby is dressed in a flannel shirt with a hair clip on its umbilical cord and left by the garage in a cardboard box.The box is then found by Skip, a house hand. Skip has never been around children much less a baby. He takes the newborn in as his own and the story begins. He becomes attached to the baby and raises it as his own... all the while keeping it a secret. We are then swept along as Skip learns to care for the baby and ends up dedicating his life to the baby. (I don't want to give up to much information on the baby.)The name of the estate where the baby is left is called "Blessings" ... owned by an eighty-year-old wealthy woman named Lydia Blessings. As the story continues we learn the secrets of Lydia Blessings and her family ... AND, there are many secrets! The characters are richly written ... you will find yourself bonding with many of them as you learn their secrets. BUT, be prepared for some tears ... keep the Kleenex close at hand.There are many "BLESSINGS" in this story. You will not be disappointed with this novel. It is a must read.

After "Black and Blue" and "One True Thing," Anna Quindlen overcame the naysayers and proved she was a first rate novelist.I so wantred to like this one, but she has simply missed the mark. If she wants to be the Margaret Atwood (or even the Carol Sheilds) of New Jersey, then she is going to have to explore characters more deeply than she has done here. A ne'er do well guy transformed into Alan Alda and an ice queen dowager turned into a Christ figure -- all over a deserted a baby in a box -- just doesn't get it. I felt obligated to finish this novel, only in hopes it would suddenly kick in. It never did. Perhaps this is what the father in "One True Thing" had put together, but instead drank himself out of writing. While there are flashes of brilliance, turns of phrases, and insights, the cohesiveness and inspiration of her first two novels is missing here. She does display an array of descriptions of the sounds bugs make, but to what end, I do not know. Beyond that this is either a lazy effort, or writer's block, or perhaps some contractual obligation to get something out there.Anna Quindlen has a lot of years and a lot of skill, and for me she is hitting .667, being successful two times out of three. That she struck out here does not mean she will not get back on track. I will buy and read her next book, but she needs to raise her game.

This is the best possible book I could have read before giving birth to my daughter. I was really worried about the childbirth process, and the class my husband and I took actually made me more nervous, not less (I felt that it focused too much on all the things that can go wrong and not enough on techniques to stay calm and problem solve). Several women in my family have wound up having emergency c-sections, and their stories had me worried. This book really helped me change that outlook and gave my husband and I a ton of great tools for labor and delivery (as well as some great perspective on how to approach new parenthood!).A lot of the techniques in the book are similar to what you might learn in a childbirth class or in other books on relaxation techniques. But what sets this book apart for me was its wholistic approach to the process. I love that the book speaks to every childbirth experience, from home birth to drug-free to c-section, without judgment. Instead, the focus is on staying present in the process and finding ways to ensure that you and your partner (and doula, doctor/midwife, or other helpers) can deal with wherever the process leads and make decisions that feel right for you. Instead of being afraid of an emergency c-section, I began focusing on my physical experience and the mindfulness methods at my disposal to handle the pain and make sure I delivered a healthy baby.In the end, many things about my birth experience went as planned (who was in the room, the way my daughter was delivered, and how we recovered afterwards). Other things didn't, like when the birth happened and my hope to go drug free. But through it all, I felt calm and in control (to a point, you can't control everything, but importantly, I didn't feel like I was at the mercy of my doctor or hospital policy). I really credit this book and the mindfulness work I did before birth, including a meditation practice, with helping get me to that point.Bonus: I love the chapter at the end on maintaining mindfulness after your baby is born, especially the part about shifting from "Industrial Time" to "Agrarian Time". It's one of the shortest sections of the book, but it really stuck with me, especially during those challenging first few months when we were both exhausted and everything is new and a little scary. I still find myself using mindfulness techniques with my daughter a year later, and I sense these tools and techniques will be helpful for many years to come.

This is a great book! I (and several of my friends) however had a really hard time reading it as it's about as riveting as you'd expect a book on this subject to be. All 4 of us purchased the audio version and were able to finish and learned a lot. The guided meditations (which are awesome) are a lot easier to experience via audio book than to read it then practice it. I definitely recommend this book, but if you're prone to drifting off to nap time when you're bored, I would definitely recommend the audiobook

While I've gained some helpful information, a lot of this book is a waste of time. It reads much more like a story, having whole chapters dedicated to what a class session was like, versus ways to implement it on your own. I do like what I have learned, and the snippets she includes from students about things that helped them. But I'd rather it got to the point than tell a story most of the time.

I skimmed quite a bit of this book. I was worried that this would be pretty useless. I have to say it really did help. This was my second delivery, and I wanted to be more prepared for the contractions. I delivered both babies naturally and without medication, and I had a much easier time with the contractions this time around. You can't just read the book, you have to actually practice mindfulness. Bragging disguised as sentimental stories isn't helpful. If you're looking for a book that will actually prepare you for natural birth, go with The Birth Partner.

I first read Hypnobirthing and decided it was not for me. Hypnobirthing highly recommends going to a class while reading the book, which was not feasible for me. After reading the book, it also seemed like I would not be able to use those strategies unless I had class instruction.Mindful Birthing was a much better fit for me. I was already familiar with mindfulness and Jon Labatt Zinn. The book was realistic that the goal was not to avoid pain but to practice mindfulness to better cope with the pain of childbirth. Reading this book also helped me to clarify my own goals for my birth experience and communicate them with my doctor and nurses.

I recommend every pregnant woman or soon-to-be pregnant woman read this book. No matter what your birth plan is- natural, pain meds, C-section- this is a book for every woman. It helps to remove the fear mongering that is so often attached to birth in this country and has helped me to remain calm and confident as I near my own birth experience. I've been practicing mindfulness for many years and have taken several of the MBSR courses that this book is based on so it was easily adaptable for me in terms of applying my mindfulness practice to child birth. I think this book would be great though for anyone who is new to the practice of mindfulness and equally valuable for someone who already has a practice.The way any woman's birth experience goes is completely unpredictable but this book gives you the tools to deal with the unknown and rise to the occasion, come what may. Whenever I have a pinch of fear arise regarding my upcoming birth I just pick up this book and am quickly soothed by the author's calming words and wisdom. Unfortunately, there are many women out there who love sharing their horrid child birth experiences with pregnant women, which I find quite insensitive and not helpful. This is the perfect book to counteract such negative input and it has helped me to create a healthier, more positive mindset around child birth.

purchased this so i could share with my kids the songs i grew up hearing in school. i hear jose luis orozco alot on Pandora when I play music for my kids. if you have prime you can listen to the complementary cd that goes with this book for free!

I'm currently very emotionally fragile and I just love singing these songs to my 3 week old. It's very cathartic and helpful and my baby seems to love the songs. Orozco's accent and voice are wonderful and authentic. I love this book and CD and am so glad I bought it.

Love this album. Clear voice, simple but lively music and words. This has become a staple in our house and the kids and I have fun trying to memorize the songs. My only gripe is that the English translations in the lyric book are very nice and helpful, but sometimes the meaning is sacrificed a little more than I'd like, to make the song more pretty. It would be more "ok" if this wasn't an effort to learn Spanish for my kiddos. (I speak Spanish, and have to tell them the literal translation sometimes if they are trying to decode the lyrics from the book.)Overall, very very happy we found this!

An excellent collection of traditional children's songs in Spanish with very colorful illustrations.. They are simply arranged and easy to learn. I recommend getting the CD of the same title. It will help you to learn the tunes and words. The only this I don't like are his translations to English. They aren't translations. They are rewrites.

I love the music Jose-Louis Orozco writes and sings for children. This is a delightful book that I've given along with CDs to two children.

This purchase was a bit of an impulse buy. However, I was pleasantly surprised! We already owned and listened to the CD that matches this book. My baby loves the music on the CD. I bought this book because I thought she would enjoy it as she got older to go along with the CD. The book has beautiful illustrations and each page has the music and words for each song. The words are provided in both Spanish and English. However, the best part of the book is that each page also has a tidbit of info about the song, such as where it came from or how to play a game as you sing the song.

Simple little songs, it is helping me learn Spanish along with my classes and books. I am hoping that the rhymes and music along with the words would make it stick longer in my memory.

Sheila is twelve and Fudge is five!!! Peter also has to spend three weeks in Maine with Sheila, Fudge and their families!!! At least he can bring his best friend, Jimmy Fargo too survive Sheila.You will find yourself laughing out loud now and then. I would recommend this to everyone! This was a amazing book!

Also going to Maine are his neighbors, the Tubmans, and that includes Sheila Tubman, his life-long enemy. Spending his vacation with Sheila Tubman will be even harder than he had expected when he finds out that he has to share a house with her. At least he can invite his friend, Jimmy Fargo, to help him survive. Their summer adventures include Peter swallowing a fly, getting a crush on a girl, Sheila babysitting Fudge, Uncle Feather going missing, and even a wedding!One reason I really like this book is that I can relate to Peter. I have someone in my life who is extremely annoying, and I also have experienced family craziness. Another reason I like the book is because it’s packed with a lot of adventures and humor.Once again I really recommend this funny and entertaining book.

I first read this series when I was a kid (I'm 40) and never forgot how greAt Judy Blume books are. I couldn't wait to share that with my kids.I read this series to my daughters (9,11,15) before bed. My 15 year old listens in on it, and laughs out loud at parts. I'm telling you, buy the series , read in order, and have some laughs with your kids! There's even some adult humor in it. If you have 7to 12 year olds, it would be a travesty to grow up NOT reading these Fudge books. I'm 39, and I have great memories of this book set. Now, I have read them to my daughters, who were glued to every word I read. They LOVED them! Trust me. Buy them. Used, borrowed, new...just make sure to read them, with the voices, to your 'Mini Me's'.

Can I tell you that my almost 6 year old and I read every Fudge book except Sheila the Great and we both laughed so hard we cried. My son even has developed some Fudge catch-phrases and learned to give himself a code name from this book in particular. Love it! Especially relevant for children with younger siblings...

About the Author

As a college senior at The University of Texas at Austin, Tricia experienced an extraordinary near-death experience after a massive car wreck. In the afterlife, she learned that she must change her plans and work as a teacher. Tricia’s near-death experience story has been featured on A&E’s I Survived: Beyond and Back and covered by National Geographic. For over twenty years, Tricia has worked in schools and universities, often in impoverished areas. She helps others transform their lives in both the academic setting and in the spiritual community. Tricia’s poetry and essays have been published in several publications including The Binnacle, The Paterson Literary Review, and The Midwest Quarterly. Currently, Tricia Barker is an English professor in Fort Worth, Texas. This is Tricia’s first full-length book.
