This is a very intelligent book, written with deep knowledge and humor. One is bound to learn quite a bit from the contents of the book. Among other things it aims at explaining the relationships that exist between language and mental evolution, social evolution and cultural evolution, which is what humans are about. But for the grace of me, I cannot understand how Amazon can release Kindle versions of books where some portions of the text are POSITIVELY UNREADABLE. The font is microscopic, causing the reader to have to skip some of the text. In my view this is quite inexcusable, as the technology is there to avoid the problem. This reflects at best a sense of carelessness from the people in charge of formatting the Kindle text, at worst a complete contempt toward the customer. A book SHOULD NOT BE KINDLE-RELEASED if it is not 100% readable. A lot still has to be done to make Kindle books at par with printed material. (Note: I have Kindle Paper White, one of the latest devices available.)

Guy Deutscher will be your new favourite linguist. His sincerity and wide-ranging admiration for linguistic achievement win one over. As a bonus, Deutscher is truly funny, no smart-ass élitist like Steven Pinker or John McWhorter. An eccentric feature of Unfolding is its incorporating fictional dialogues among two non-professional linguists and a linguistics professor. Not the character in the dialogue Deutscher hovers nearest to but only by his sufferance present in the dialogue at all is a representative of the (also fictional) “Royal Society for the Protection of English.” Elsewhere, in a similar vein, Deutcher recalls the great 19C romantic-linguist August Schleicher with qualified approval. Compare such allowances to the up-front hostility of Bas Aart’s Modern Grammar: “Readers hoping to find confirmation [here] that the so-called split infinitive is odious…will be disappointed” (Preface). Deutscher’s relative openmindedness in these regards bodes well for our opinion of the book as a whole.The thesis of Unfolding is that changes in language are the work of opposing cyclical forces. The Gothic word for “guest” was “gast,” and the plural of “gast” was “gastiz.” The “a” and “i” of “gastiz” requiring different mouth positions in quick succession, “gastiz” underwent what is known as a-mutation: the colouring of an “a” by a subsequent “i” that makes the “a” easier to pronounce (120). After a-mutation, which made {a} into {eh}, the singular-plural pair became gast/gestiz. Emphasis being on the first syllable of “gestiz” and the pair already being distinguishable from each other by this vowel-shift, the terminal “z” wore off leaving only “i,” which was soon even further eroded to “ə” (schwa). The mid-word a/e feature caught on as a paradigm—as students of modern German know, or wish they knew, all too well. Thus did one “blind change” (194), which destroyed part of German word structure, prompt analogical extension and lead, ultimately, to the shining new edifice of nominal German umlaut.Deutscher’s is a brilliant model of language change, but I have a few questions for him. One involves the fact that some blind changes seem to have lead to permanent destruction. According to Benjamin Forston III, a barrage of syncope and apocope “[devastated]” Old Irish verbs and especially verbs compounded with one or more preverbs (323); as a result, the absolute and conjunct forms even of relatively simple verbs can look entirely and preposterously unalike (324). What but confusion did such erosion bring for the Insular Celts and the students of the Celtic language thereafter? Shouldn’t they have fought (negative) change off insofar as they could? And regarding the possibility of fighting off change, isn’t Sanskrit, whose very name means “[carefully] assembled,” an instance of a language consciously defying erosion? And isn’t conservative Senatorial Latin another instance? Deutcher needs standards of positive and negative change.

A fascinating and well-written book.Deutscher describes how languages change over time, and he offers some explanations for the changes. And he does this with some flair; it's more Bill Bryson than textbook.He shows how the slang of today becomes the formal, proper language of tomorrow. This process has been occurring for millennia. It's interesting to hear the criticisms of ancient Roman commentators about the careless language of the day.He also gives some insight into how certain languages work. I'd always wondered about the various salaams, shaloms, and the like in Semitic languages. Why are they so similar, but not exactly the same? And what about Latin case structure - what is that all about? Deutscher explains some of these potentially tedious topics in an interesting and informative manner.After reading this book, you'll never hear language quite the same way again.Essential reading for grammar Nazis!

After reading Tom Wolfe's last book, which lambasted Noam Chomsky's chokehold on the nature and evolution of language, I went back to this book which makes an impressive, relatively non-controversial case on how language and its components evolved. He is very, very careful not to engage in the intellectual and academic politics that Wolfe reveled in. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the origins of human consciousness and culture. It's a pretty easy read for an interested layman.

A phenomenal book on the evolution of human language written with incredible wit and humor, as well as great erudition and intelligence. Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning how and why language changes over the ages. As a speaker of both English and a Semitic language I found this book especially interesting as these are two language family groups that the author goes into a great deal of detail about. I would, however, have appreciated more references to the tonal languages of Asia as I know nothing of their grammar and wonder if this language family undergoes the same processes the Semitic and Indo-European languages do.

It’s good. I enjoyed seeing the time period through the efforts important people of the time. No surprises, but then how could there be?

The Renaissance a time of recovery from the dark ages where a lot of innovation was lost.

I thought this book was a good over all review of that period in time. Before I wrote my review, I noticed that one reviewer said he learned nothing new and all can be found on Wikipedia, well maybe he is right, but this is not meant to be a scholarly work that breaks new ground. The Captivating History Series is more for people who just want to learn a bit about history and not willing (or want to) read a college level history book that is more bogged down in details. But is written in such a way that even a college history major (like me) can enjoy it and also learn something. I knew about this period but got a chance to review what I learned and managed to learn a few new things too.

The Renaissance has always been interesting to me, perhaps because I grew up in Europe and have had the pleasure of seeing a lot of the art and architecture from the time. This guide by Captivating History hits the main highlights of the era as well as taught me a few new things! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about some of the great thinkers, scientists and artists of The Renaissance. Its just unfortunate that the females (other than high society) weren't able to search and find their potential at the same time! Well Done!

A beautiful presentation book, with commentary in the chassidic/Chabad tradition.

After reviewing many versions of this book, I am very pleased with this particular version. Further, it was quick and easy to order and was received promptly.

The book did not come in the binding that was advertised. The condition was god but not like new. I thought about returning it but it would be difficult to find the edition advertised. Im keeping it but its not what was advertised by a long shot

i got a white copy that looks different that than the one pictured it is also a different shape. i don't think that I got what I requested

I have long wanted to read a decent history of the Trail of Tears. Years ago I tried reading John Ehle's book on the subject, but the pathos was too much. (I can well understand both the outrage and the sorrow, but I don't need my emotions prodded; I am looking for the facts.) So I turned to THE CHEROKEE NATION AND THE TRAIL OF TEARS, an installment in the Penguin Library of American Indian History.It did not begin very promisingly. The first chapter opens with the Cherokee creation legend -- involving the little water beetle, the Great Buzzard, and the brother and sister who were the first humans, the female giving birth to a child every seven days after her brother struck her with a fish. I realized, however, that the point of that first chapter was to show how much the Cherokees identified with their land, or their cosmos, where the states of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina now come together -- so I persevered. Fortunately, the book soon turned into what I was looking for: a good historical account of this particular episode (one of far too many) in the European-American displacement of Native Americans. I recently got into an argument with my passionate middle son, who wanted to characterize that displacement as "genocide"; I wouldn't go that far, but it certainly was a brand of ethnic cleansing.One of the things that makes the Cherokee episode particularly sad, and more notable, was that the Cherokees had gone a long ways towards adopting many of the trappings of Anglo-European civilization, including development of an alphabet for their native tongue and adopting a constitution. But their land was coveted, so they, too, were dismissed as savages, essentially people without rights. Once again in matters of Indian affairs, the federal government was mendacious. The State of Georgia was even worse. In May 1830 President Jackson signed the Removal Bill, providing in principle for the removal of many native peoples from the East to the West. Then the "Treaty" of New Echota was crammed down on the Cherokees (despite the vehement objections of about half of them, including the ones with the best claims to being the legitimate leaders of the Cherokee Nation), and pursuant to its terms, forcible removal of the Cherokees began in May 1838. Figures, of course, are far from precise, but it is estimated that out of 16,000 Cherokee Indians who were forcibly marched and transported from the Southern Appalachians to Arkansas and Oklahoma (on the "Trail of Tears"), 4,000 died en route. And once relocated, the Cherokees were visited with more broken promises, in terms of the provisions and money that had been guaranteed them in the treaties that had been forced on them. The entire episode so factionalized the Cherokees that relative tribal unity and harmony were not restored until after the Civil War.Authors Perdue and Green tell the story in a compact 160 pages. There is not a lot of detail, but the authors are quite good in recognizing and discussing "bigger picture" themes and forces. The story does get somewhat tangled in Chapter 5, what with the conflicting agendas of Andrew Jackson, Congress, the State of Georgia, and two factions of Cherokees, but I suspect that events themselves were tangled and messy and that it would have been difficult to cover the territory more clearly. For those interested in a responsible summary of the subject, I recommend the book.

I saw "Unto These Hills" and now it makes a lot more sense.

Bought 3 copies of this book ...a copy for myself and 1 for each grandchild. I enjoyed reading this because it was the history of the area in which I live. It was a very touching and sad experience for so many. I think this would be a very good book for schools to have in their classrooms.

There are so few specifics that it is hard to use this book for actually selecting a cruise -- it is more a "cruise appreciation" book for someone who has never been on a cruise, and is wondering what it is all about -- for this group it would be good. If you want something to actually help you pick a specific cruise, look elsewhere for comprehensive coverage.Just one example: for all the ports of the whole Mediterranean, there are only 5 pages of coverage (mostly dominated by large photos instead of informative text), with mostly vague descriptions of what you might encounter. There is only one "Key Port Feature", the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul …. really, that is it, given all of Malta, Italy, Greece, France, Spain, and so forth? What about Pompeii? Barcelona? Cannes? the Vatican? Amazing prehistoric traces of humanity in Malta, Santorini, etc. And it ignores "gotchas", such as the fact that common port stops labeled as "Rome" or "Florence" actually involve long bus rides from various industrial coastal ports (and if you're unlucky, some of that time will be wasted at a touristic truck stop).And for each section, there are highlighted only a few "Carrier Options", which gives the impression that these are the only ships which tour those areas -- is this a paid promotion or what?

I love cruising so I appreciated this book. It tells you tips, hints, best times to travel where, where you can catch the Northern Lights, what times of year. It contains helpful tantalizing images, things you can aspire to see yourself. It has tips fo seasickness, talks about the different types of cruises you can go on. I didn't realize there were riverboat cruises. I found this a helpful book and I plan to read it even more in depth as my cruise approaches this year. However, I noticed it didn't touch on the Mexican cruises. That's a popular one here in the States so I'm surprised they didn't provide any data on those.

Never been on a cruise. This is a great guide book for preparing to go on one and choosing where to go. Very helpful.

I usually like the Lonely Planet series of travel guides, but this one, on cruises,has such thin content that I found it a waste to read. It does have some decent practical information about booking and planning a cruise, but beyond that, it's too generalized to be helpful. For instance, the 6-page section on Alaska has photographs -- not necessarily a bad thing -- that reduces the actual text to about 3 pages, only 1 page of which is probably useful. I wish they had covered the major ports in Alaska (or anywhere) to discuss the best excursions and activities. Instead, only Juneau gets that treatment. Another example of thin content: Oceania, including both Australia and New Zealand, gets only four pages total, including photographs, and tells you almost nothing about those countries.The Cruise Handbook suffers from trying to be too much and ending up being too little. The content is generalized and mostly intuitive as the authors try to give an overview of what it's like to cruise. If you want to try to figure out whether you want to take your first cruise, maybe this will help. It will not help you plan a cruise once you've booked and chosen your location. It covers too many cruise possibilities without being concrete about any of them.As someone who likes travel books and likes to page through them, it pains me to write that you'd get better information online than reading this book.-- Debbie Lee Wesselmann

This was probably an interesting book when it was published, a generation ago, in 1995. Since then, so much has changed, that Tapscott's theses are either proven or forgotten. Sure, some of them still have a chance of happening, and some of his observations about business in general are interesting and valid, but too much has changed since then. If he wrote the book today, I'm sure he would approach vastly different subjects.There is a gee-whiz character in the book that is a bit irksome. In some parts, it reads like Popular Science in the 1930s - this awe of new technologies, many of which never made it past the drawing board, that propels him into elegies of modernism (like the high-school kid with his own home page - back then that might have been revolutionary...).One thing bothers me a bit: there is a constant, yet subtle, advertising for his consulting company and workshops running through the book. It almost seems that the book is an ad for the higher-cost training sessions that he runs. All the diagrams and tables are copyright New Paradigm Learning Corporation, whereas, technically, you don't copyright data in this manner. This makes me uncomfortable, and it looks like the author is just trying to constantly remind you that his makes his real money elsewhere.

There were many annoying things about this book. Perhaps most annoying is that he never really talks about economies, and just blathers about gee-whiz technology in a rapid fire manner. He doesn't really penetrate much into the technology, nor bothers to say how it is really going to affect economies. The book is full of pre-9/11, pre-internet bubble euphoria, and never spends any time fully exploring its interesting premise.Certain the internet and communication technologies will effect the economy, and anyone trying to get any real insight here, beyond that it will make the world a better place and lots of people are going to make more money (stated over and over again), will be greatly let down.The effects of technology on economies is better described elsewhere, such as "The Innovator's Dilemma" and other books that understand both economics and the relevant technology, something a "visionary" such as Tapscott has no time for.Beyond providing insight into internet/technology mania of the mid to late 90's, I see no reason to invest time to read this book.

Even if the book was written in the mid 90 it still gives the bases to understand how Digital Economy is transforming our businesses and lives. Don Tapscott is clearly explaining that after Total Quality Management TQM, Business Processes Reengineering BPR we enter a new era where we will be asked to literally transform our businesses and lives.The convergence of computing, telecommunications and content is a real revolution, giving access to a networked economy working in real time and without knowing distances. This means that boundaries are exploding. Learning is becoming a continuous process and part of our day to day work it is why Digital Economy is often called Knowledge Economy. Customer is integrated in the production process and organizations are moving from a vertical integration to extended networks including customers, suppliers and more and more often competitors. We are far from the industrial hierarchical organizations where we are working now.Don Tapscott is helping us to understand the New Economy 12 themes supported by the 10 technological shifts and the move from individual effectiveness to the internetworked businesses through high performance teams, integrated organizations and extended enterprises. But finally he is convincing us that as part of an internetworked leadership, we are collectively responsible to achieve the transformation of our businesses for a better life promised by the New interactive Economy.Don Tapscott is also helping us to evaluate impact of the Digital Economy on our business work, on our education systems, and on our governments.
