Review

"...these books would be my first choice as an introduction to the natural environments of these beautiful parts of the world. For those who enjoy well-illustrated field guides, these volumes are a visual treat."--COPEIA (2001)"This is a natural history guide for someone who is really serious about gaining an in-depth understanding of Hawaii's natural environment, animals and plants. It's very complete and very well done...and is the best one that I've seen about Hawaii."--David Taylor in HAWAII ISLAND JOURNAL (October 2000)"If you are comtemplating a visit to Hawaii, this book is sure to make up your mind for you! ...It is obiously well thought out and is well-illustrated, taking a broad view of the attributes of the Hawaiian Isles - Ecotourism, Conservation, Geography & Climate, Parks & Reserves, Flora and Fauna to name but a few. ...excellent photographic plates for quick and easy reference."--SCOTTISH BIRD NEWS (2000)"They neatly fill a niche in the travel market, concentrating on the species most likely to be seen, but also covering a wide range of taxa. ...indispensable to all travellers interested in the natural world."--BTO NEWS

From the Author

Even though I'm a professional wildlife biologist, I've always found it difficult while travelling to identify animals I'm not familiar with and to get good, on-site information about them, unless I'm with an expert guide or willing to lug around several heavy books (a bird book, a mammal book, etc.). I've produced the Ecotravellers' Wildlife Guides to help solve this problem. The books in the series are aimed at travellers with an interest in animals, at people for whom some of the best moments of any trip to places like southern Mexico are unexpected encounters with birds and mammals, reptiles and amphibians, fish and other marine organisms. You will find in these books information on (1) common animals likely to be seen, (2) those that are commonly pointed out by tour-guides and tourist literature, (3) some threatened ones that are, for example, subjects of conservation attention, and (4) some that are of special ecological significance. The books, endorsed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, are real field guides, with extensive color artwork produced by some of the world's top wildlife artists. To give you an idea of the "depth" of coverage, the Tropical Mexico book (which covers the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun region, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco states) includes detailed information and color illustrations on 104 plates of about 250 bird species, 55 mammals, 95 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 150 coral reef fish and other marine organisms - the book truly covers most of the animals you might encounter in this large region. Additionally, initial chapters in each book introduce the country or region, its habitats and climate, its common trees and other plants, and describe conservation projects and ecotourism there, as well as major eco-attractions (national parks, nature reserves, etc.). My hopes are that these books will be put to good use in the field by ecotravellers, will make trips more enjoyable, and will assist in conservation in a small way by helping to educate people about the wildlife and habitats in the countries through which they travel.

This is a natural history guide for someone who is really serious about gaining an in-depth understanding of Hawaii's natural environment, animals and plants. It's very complete and very well done (for the most part) and is the best one that I've seen about Hawai`i. Following the pattern of many other guidebooks, Beletsky's guide is divided into two sections. The first section (204 pages) is explanatory text while the second section (180 pages) consists of color drawings and photographs of Hawaii's flora and fauna. The first half of the book is very comprehensive and is itself divided into basically two parts. Part "A" (6 chapters) covers ecotourism, Hawaii's natural history (including geography and climate), habitats, parks and preserves, getting around, environmental threats, conservation and how to use the book. Part "B" covers Hawaii's animals in just the right amount of detail (and in 6 more chapters). Each chapter explores a major animal group, such as "Amphibians and Reptiles," "Birds," "Mammals," etc. The chapters are well organized and they all include the same sections for each animal group. For example, the chapter on Mammals includes Mammals of Hawai`i, Characteristics of the Mammals, Family Profiles, and an "Environmental Close-up." Each of those sections then includes common subsections. It sounds tedious, but it actually works very well! The second half of Beletsky's guide contains the color plates used for identifying all of the species described in the first half. They are beautifully done. Each animal has a brief description along with its names (common, Hawaiian and scientific), a habitat icon and a habitat description. There are also lots of interesting "factoids" in this guidebook. One of the more interesting "environmental close-ups" is the one on spinner dolphins. They often travel with spotted dolphins and/or tuna in what is called a "mutualistic relationship" to protect themselves against sharks. Spinners feed during the night and spotteds feed during the day, so they trade off watching for sharks. They both like tuna schools around because the tuna are better than they are at sensing the presence of sharks; when the tuna take off, so do they! While this is an excellent guidebook overall, I do have some complaints. The key to the habitat icons isn't anywhere near the color plates or in the index; it's way back on page 77 and very hard to find. Some of the sections are actually contributed by different people and I got tired of reading the same introductory comments about Hawaii's isolation and the evolution of endemic species over and over. The habitat pictures feel like they were just "thrown in" - they aren't captioned very well and they aren't matched to the habitat icons. The plant plates also feel "thrown in" - there isn't a matching chapter on plants in the first half of the book. Fixing those items would make it a "five out of five stars" book.

An absolute must for Hawai‘i visitors who want to get out of the tourist traps and into the remnants of "the real Hawai“i." Beletsky understands the natural history of these islands very well, and is an excellent communicator. Superb illustrations as well.

Such a bargain! I purchased this book "used" for $5 -- and it was brand spanking new -- not even a crease or smudge. This book was invaluable on our recent rip to the Big Island -- plants, birds, fish, marine life, reptiles, mammals -- and nice articles about the ecosystems and natural worlds to be found in Hawaii. It went with us everyday as we explored the island. And became a useful read back in the room at the hotel or on the beach. It does not contain "everything" but is a concise snapshot of most wildlife and vegetation that you will encounter on your travels. Great find!

This is an excellent and somewhat timeless summary of the natural environment of Hawaii. Thoroughly recommended and really good value for money.

I'm moving to Hawaii in February for four months to work outdoors and this book has been invaluable for planning my weekend backpacking trips when Im' not working!

We took several field guides to Hawaii, and this is the one I turned to over and over. On a hike, I took it first. Bird coverage is not fully complete for all possible birds. But we didn't see a bird not in this book. Best short form plant guide we found.

Great story. My girls got an opportunity to meet Ruby. She is a charming woman, and great example. Very good story for kids of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. Demonstrates how the rule of law and determined people who stand up for what is right can change the culture, and continue to improve our great country. It also shows young girls and boys that standing up for what is right is hard to do, especially when many around you are disapproving, even violently opposed to you. But often the hardest things are the right things. And that there are good, decent people (in this example, teachers, federal marshals, judges, friends) who prevail when the (changed) law is on their side, even against norms of the time.

Robert Cole's account of this historic day was good---but I found this one excelled in that it was told from Ruby's viewpoint!I always loved Norman Rockwell's painting of Ruby being escorted to her first day of school by U.S Marshalls ! As a teacher who had her first class in 1962----it was hard to believe the struggle that was going on two years before in New Orleans!!This year -I had the pleasure of meeting Ruby's teacher--Barbara Henry here in Massachusetts!! After my visit with her---"I Googled" to find out more about the grown up Ruby and was delighted to see her meeting Clinton and Obama at the White House-----and having a heart-felt reunion with Mrs. Henry on the Oprah show!!! An inspiring story and a tribute to her extreme faith in God!!

This leveled reader is great for introducing lower elementary students to an historical figure. I use these readers for English Language Learners as well, especially for pre-teaching vocabulary before a unit. This book has real photographs. Sentences are not too long with only 2-5 sentences per page. Perfect for engaging the reader.

This was beautifully written....from the perspective of Ms. Ruby when she was young. Easy for children to understand. I had my spouse even read it, just because he never heard of her....which was no surprise...schools only focus on one African American figure...Dr. Martin Luther King. Since schools do not do their part in expanding on the other people who also help change history....it is my role as a parent to expose my children to the "underexposed" history changers.

Great for differentiating for my second graders. Went well with the "Rookie Biographies" as well as The Story of Ruby Bridges. I have such a variety of readers in the class I need a way for all readers to access the same content. I really appreciate that this had actual pictures as well. It sparked some good discussions with my students and went well with a Social Studies lesson on compassion.

This is a fantastic book, totally age-appropriate for the 5-7 set. As others have noted, the photos show language that is no longer used to talk about African Americans, as well as language that we never okay, but I was able to have a conversation about those words that I *think* set the groundwork for more nuanced conversations down the road.

Ordered it so my 6 year old can write a report for school. We found it an easy read and hit all the key points that should be explained for this level reader.

Important narrative for children and adults to understand the Civil Rights movement in the 50th Anniversary of MKl' s death. This little girl and her family have a story to tell in 2018 where racism is still prevalent in a more covert way. And, as a a woman of European descent, I need to Be Awake.

As comprehensive survey histories go, you can't do much better than this one. It combines detail, analysis, and succinct narratives into an absolutely wonderful reading experience. Best of all, even though I knew the outlines of the history quite well, I learned something on every page and felt enthralled for all 500 pages.America was discovered at the very beginning of the modern age, during what we would call the Renaissance, though many of the explorers resembled medieval pillagers at best; Europe was also moving into the Reformation, of course, which played out in the Americas in its own brutal ways. The Europeans had limited experience dealing with culture clash and shock, so they presumed their superiority over the "savage pagans" and hence treated the natives as slaves and animals, though there were a few humanitarian exceptions. The Spanish arrived looking for slaves and gold, bringing the first wave of microbes that would kill up to 98% of the native populations. Their idea was to extract as much wealth as possible, though a few of them began to establish ranches and farms. Interestingly, the template for the conquistadors were the Canary Islands, which they essentially devastated - killing virtually all the natives, destroying the entire natural ecology, and installing themselves as slave plantation owners.About 100 years later, the British began to attempt to colonize what became Virginia. After several catastrophic failures and wars with the Spanish, they succeeded in establishing a crude colony, based on indentured labor for the price of passage and tobacco plantations; it was loosely Anglican. England at that time was in social upheaval, so many wished to depart with hopes of a better life. This soon changed when New England was established, which was largely Puritan though with many other strict protestant sects. While relatively autarkic economically, once the highly profitable sugar plantations were established in Barbados and its nearby islands, there was finally a market for New England goods, stimulating the economy for fish and other staples that the West Indies could not produce for itself. The sugar plantations also served as template for slave plantations in the deep south. The French established trading posts in Canada, working more cooperatively with the Indians because of the sparseness of French immigration. Most of their trade was in furs, which the Indians supplied in exchange for guns and metal tools. There were also Dutch and Swedish colonies in the mid-Atlantic, soon to be absorbed into the British Empire, which continued its incipient war with the French until the 18C.Each colony had its own character, such as Quaker Pennsylvania under the Penn family, a kind of family franchise that boomed for a number of decades and was surprisingly tolerant. Most fascinating to me was the establishment of Rhode Island, a tolerant oasis for religious experimentation, by Roger Williams when he was exiled from Massachusetts for religious ideas that bordered on fanaticism.Throughout the volume, Taylor is very critical of the behavior of the colonists, who in spite of many sincere efforts to treat the natives with dignity and respect essentially wound up taking whatever they wanted. As a result, surviving east coast Indians were either pushed west or simply massacred. Many of the tribes that emerged were actually amalgams of disease survivors, hence relatively new, though larger groupings, such as the Iroquois nations, remained players for longer periods. Of course, there were exceptional adaptations as well: when the Plains Indians acquired guns and horses, they expanded their populations and became formidable adversaries as newly established warrior cultures, though could never effectively unite; they also remained dependent on white men for gun powder and metal working.Taylor goes into many of the cultural details of all parties involved, particularly the various Indian tribes. This is very fun, but due to the format of a comprehensive survey is superficial at best. The bibliography is also outdated, given that the book was written about 20 years ago. If I have a serious criticism, it is the lack of a sum-up chapter at the end, bringing together the complex strands that Taylor describes so well. This is an unusually fun read for a survey history. Taylor does a great job at pointing out the brutal underbelly of what transpired, no holds barred, but also in historical context of what the protagonists were thinking. Recommended warmly.

This book presents a fascinating and detailed look at the settlement of the Americas. It covers the early Spanish and French explorers, the horrors committed by the Conquistadors, and an interesting perspective on the differences between the English colonists in Chesapeake (Virginia) and Massachusetts. Ever wonder why the Spanish colonized Central America, while the French operated in Canada, and the English colonized the Atlantic states? This book tells you. American Colonies also gives you a very detailed view of the history of the various Indian tribes both before and after the Europeans arrived. Until I read this book I never realized that Indians farmed corn and beans to such a great extent. Not only that, but the farming methods of the Indians on the Atlantic seaboard was far superior to the methods used by the early colonists. Much of the land used by the Massachusetts colonists for farming was first cleared by Indians who perished in astounding numbers by disease. The book also details the history of slavery in the Western Hemisphere, and describes why natives snared into slavery perished, and why slaves brought from Africa survived. If you enjoy reading about history of the Americas, this is a book you should read. Be mindful that its coverage goes way beyond the American colonies. It is really about the history of Central America, the Caribbean, the United States and Canada, focusing on the period between 1492 and 1820.

Alan Taylor surveys the history of settling of North America from its earliest inhabitants (scholarship as of 2000, could use an update) to the formation of the United States in a very thoughtful, non-partisan manner. This work is full of fascinating details. For example, in its earliest forms in North America, slavery was not initially based on race but turned into racial chattel slavery in a very particular manner for a very particular reason. The Native Americans in California had a very sophisticated way of managing and shaping the "natural" environment. Taylor gives an excellent treatment of subjects that are not commonly treated in surveys, such as the differences between French, Spanish, and English settlements the causes and consequences of the Pueblo revolt, and how different Native American groups had cleverly managed to achieve a modicum of coexistence and balance with the colonial powers...until the Seven Years War, which then eventually led to the near total destruction of Native societies.

I am not a historian, however, this book seemed to cover a huge amount of ground in reasonable depth primarily from the perspective of the affected natives while providing a good amount of information about the pressures that led to colonialism.

Anyone concerned about EMP natural or otherwise should read. One thing I did not see is that if not natural there is still the threat of a second emp after a short while to take out machinery that has been brought out of the cages and in operation.

There's nothing in this book that you couldn't find in articles on the internet. Very little detail on the construction of faraday cages.

This was very basic and not helpful, I got more information just reading online.

Minimal book with minimal info. Contact link for future notifications did not work.

#125,645 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought my first edition of this book back in the late 80s and even though I have taken good care of it, over the decades ... well, the past is gobbling up the future. For years the only source book of this nature was '777 and other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley' This is a great book to supplement 777 and I highly recommend it to anyone who studies the Literal and the Unwritten Qabalah. It is, simply put, a must have for any Esoteric Library. It functions much the same as Crowley's 777 so if you are familiar with that book you will have no problems with this one. The real difference between the two is Godwin's is a bit easier to read, as opposed to A. Crowley's writing style. I'm fine with Crowley's writings. Love them. But, this book is really easy to read and USE in your everyday studies of QBL! 93!

Wow!Everything about this book is simply amazing! Layout. Correspondences. Illustrated. This is a must for anyone involved with occult. I remember as a child I used to read encyclopedias and dictionaries. Well this is one that will be near to hand. David Godwin, Thank you for re releasing your work. Truly brilliant!

This book saved my Life i must say at first i didnt understand it but after researching for a couple of years and came back to this book i was raised TO A LIVEING PERPENDICULAR if you dont have this book next to your Webster dictionary you are finished mr Godwin said that this book might has well been in arabic.I said to my self islam is mathmatics so is this book peace

A good judge of the worth of a Reference book is how often you use it. I use this book almost every day -- usually more than once a day. It has most of the words one enounters as a Qabalist/Kabbalist, and some that one rarely sees. It has a more than adequate alphabetical list of Hebrew words and phrases with their corresponding Gematria. And, it has a list of numbers in the back with a healthy listing of words that correspond to those numbers.Oh, there are a couple of things I don't particularly like about it. It has too much emphasis on Crowely in it (even with Sepher Sephiroth in the very back). Crowely didn't know the Hebrew language well enough to make a significant contribution in this regard. Also, his own list of words (Sepher Sephiroth) shows a bias that one can only call, strange. Anyway, to each his own. There's also a single-minded preference for the Western Hermetic Tree as the only one viable, and any serious student of the Qabalah/Kabbalah knows that this is problemmatic at best.Still, even with these reservations, I heartily recommend this book for anyone who is a student of any Qabalistic Tradition. There's definitely enough 'meat' in here to make it worthwile.Peace Profound,Neshamah

Excellent resource! A friend has original now OOP. Grateful to find this one.

This is truly an esoteric encyclopedia, not a lesson book on the Kabbalah. Complex and puzzling at times, but fascinating, nonetheless.

I love this book so very much! I have learned so much that I never even realized I was missing out on through the study and daily reading of this tome. It is always handy, so I can look up words/letters/numbers on the fly. I also enjoy looking up Angels, Goetic Demons, Qlippoth, Tunnels of Set and much more. It has added a great deal to my understanding of correspondences and Tarot. Plus it contains Sepher Sephirot from 777, to give further meaning to the numbers. All around a great book. Kudos to the author!I do have one quibble, the binding of the book is not the best quality and I predict I will have to replace this book in time. I would think it is the sheer size of the volume that contributes to this and I will gladly replace it if the time comes. It is a minor issue because the content is so worthwhile. Otherwise I like the paper and the layout and fonts are very well done. I will always have a copy, that is for sure. Highly recommended!

I like it but you have to remember this is more like a guide book. you have to have a basic understanding on the topic. It's very expensive but it is a really thick book which had breakdown from numbers for: Hebrew, English etc. For the reader who really wants to learn.

#131,702 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

At one time it was said that Lisa Randall was the most cited theoretical physicist with about 10,000 citations. This is no easy achievement. She has now written a fascinating story about dark matter. Her previous books were: “Warped Passages” about the role of extra dimensions and “Knocking on Heaven's Door” about the Higgs particle. The latter contained the best explanation of the Higgs that I have read. This new book requires less of a technical background to understand. It is the easiest to read.“Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs” combines stars, galaxies, comets, meteors, particle interactions, and of course dinosaurs. What could be better? The book is well written and totally fascinating. We know of the existence of dark matter by its effects on ordinary matter, in particular, through the rotational speed of galaxies, and also by its role in the gravitational lensing of light. Dark matter permeates the universe. There is five times as much dark matter as there is ordinary matter. We also think that the dinosaurs died 66 million years ago when a large meteoroid, e.g., comet or asteroid, crashed into the Earth. Is there a connection between dark matter and the extinction of the dinosaurs? Did a dark matter disk lying in the plane of our galaxy nudge the meteoroid into a collision course with the Earth? As an atomic/nuclear physicist I am captivated by the idea that dark matter may form atom-like objects. Once you have self-interacting dark matter, everything else follows: the galactic disk, period passage of the solar system through the disk, the meteoroid nudge, and the tragic end of the dinosaurs. However, I think that we will have to learn more about dark matter. Satellite observations of the motion of stars may tell us about the disk of dark matter. More about the nature of dark matter may be revealed at the LHC or at the bottom of a gold mine in South Dakota, a land once ruled by dinosaurs.

This is another very interesting book by Lisa Randall, theoretical physicist at Harvard University. The book is divided into three main parts: The Development of the Universe, An Active Solar System, and Deciphering Dark Matters Identity. In the first part, we are introduced to this thing called dark energy – something that remains constant over time as the universe expands. That's why this type of energy can be called a cosmological constant. We can determine the existence of this stuff via gravitational lensing, the characteristics of the Bullet Cluster, supernovae measurements, and the study of the microwave background radiation.- all explained by Randall. This is important stuff, because dark matter makes up 69 percent of the energy in the universe. We are also given here a history lesson on the universe starting with the Big Bang, for which the author provides us with ample evidence of the event's occurrence. Later, we see the development of stars and galaxies, and how the competition of radiation and matter brought this about. Dark matter also played an important role here.In the second section, we get an introduction to meteors, asteroids, comets, and the planets. Associated with these objects are the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud. There is an excellent primer on how to determine the edge of the Solar System, and an introduction to near-Earth objects. The discussion continues into the five major extinctions that have occurred starting with the Ordovician-Silurian period about 440 million years ago. There were others before this, but these had a major impact on life on Earth. It is the last one, called the K-Pg extinction, that is responsible for the final blow to the dinosaurs, and the author elaborates on this in her book. Actually, it all began with Walter and Luis Alvarez back in 1980 when they discovered a layer of iridium dating back to about 65 million years ago. Over the years, other evidence solidified the findings, such as the discovery of other rare metals, rock droplets called microkrystites, tektites, and other evidence. Eventually the crater at Chicxulub was found clinching the case.By part three, we are now deciphering the mystery of dark matter. There are a number of possible paradigms for what dark matter is composed of. One prominent candidate are WIMPS. Some others are axions, neutrinos, machos, and asymmetrical dark matter models. Finding the right candidate is the difficult part since “today’s searches rely on a leap of faith that dark matter, despite its near invisibility, has interactions that are sufficiently substantial for detectors built from ordinary matter to register.” We have direct detection method, such as cryogenic detectors, and those that employ noble liquids. Then there are the indirect detections methods that involve looking for the signal that would arise if dark matter particles annihilate with dark matter antiparticles transforming the energy produced into something visible. The author discusses some discrepancies uncovered in the search for dark matter, such as the core-cusp problem, the missing satellite problem, and the too big to fail problem. Further chapters discuss an interesting hypothesis of the author called “double-disk dark matter,” (DDDM) and also something called “partially interacting dark matter,” where you have a small component of the dark matter that interacts through nongravitational forces. So how is all this related to the dinosaurs? Well, according to the DDDM theory, our galaxy would contain two types of disks, the dark matter disk and the visible matter disk. As the Solar System oscillated through the dark matter disk as we moved through the galaxy, gravitational forces could have slung “comets out of the Oort cloud so that they periodically catapulted into Earth, possible even precipitating a mass extinction.” The Oort cloud is a cloud of icy bodies found beyond Pluto. Who would have known?

Lisa Randall’s book is an interesting, entertaining and fun journey of a speculative new scientific idea from its first inception through the scientific process to the proposal of experimental tests. It was impressive to see the scientific rigor that is applied to investigate all possible implications and all conceivable alternative explanations. Yet the book is much more than that as it explains the current understanding how the universe evolved, galaxies and stars formed and how all of this is connected to (and by) dark matter and ultimately our life here on earth. To me this was not just a book about the idea how dark matter could have contributed to the demise of the Dinosaurs, it is a detective story and a view into a scientific mind working through all aspects a new scientific theory. And it was actually fun to read. Many analogies and funny anecdotes made it easier (at least for me) to understand the science and there are also tons of fun facts about science and our society in general. The book was highly praised by two reviewers of science magazine (The dark side of the universe, Jan Smit and Renske Smit, Science 23 October 2015: 390. [DOI:10.1126/science.aad2604]) and Lisa Randall points out clearly what are speculations, proven facts or established theories and makes this easily understandable for us non physicists.Yet here we are again: I see this in many science book reviews on Amazon. There is always the annoying “I give this zero stars” review without any meaningful explanation. Then there is the usual guy who has his own “theory” how the world works. The “If you happen to believe in dark matter…” is the dead giveaway.I rate this book five stars because it’s an entertaining read and scientifically as correct as a book for non-scientists can be (just look at the positive reviews in the scientific journals).

"Philip Gleason has produced a magisterial interpretation of Catholic higher education in the twentieth century....[T]he most reliable and convincing comprehensive history of Catholic higher education. It is a must read for all involved in Catholic higher education and for all those interested in the intellectual and institutional history of religion and education in this country."--U.S. Catholic Historian"[A] very fine book."--Commonweal"Contending With Modernity is...an important book....[A] thorough and impressive piece of scholarship."--America"Academics, their appetites whetted by a steady stream of brilliant articles, eargerly awaited this history. They will not be disappointed. Gleason knows the material, blends it into a dramatic success story and provides some answers to the how and why questions."--National Catholic Reporter"A measured, balanced, meticulously researched, and authoritative study of a subject as important as it is vast. Reading this book is an almost unalloyed delight....The insights of Contending with Modernity fully match both the complexity and importance of its subject."--Books and Culture"Philip Gleason has written a stimulating and important book that makes a valuable contribution to understanding American Catholic intellectual culture in the first half of the twentieth century."--Catholic Historical Review"Athough the evolution of Catholic higher education in the United States ia an important and complex topic, historians, for the most part, have accorded it meager attention. This beautifully written book, based heavily on primary data, goes far to compensate for past neglect. This is a superb book and it is highly recommended."--The Journal of American History"The story he tells is fascinating....It is a quite excellent book, detailed in research, accomplished in execution, authoritative in judgement, and one which will hardly be bettered."--Labor History"[A] superb history."--The Cresset"Philip Gleason's history of American Catholic higher education in the twentieth century is masterful....[T]he most important study of the topic since Edward J. Power's History of Catholic Higher Education in the United States (1958)."--American Historical Review"Professor Gleason has provided an erudite, searching, thoroughly researched and elegantly written history of the evolution of on of these traditions....[T]he definitive study on the subject and likely to remain so for many years to come."--Studies in Education"In this massively researched and well-reasoned book, Philip Gleason brings a lifetime of learning and experience to showing how [second- and third- generation Catholic immigrants] managed [to satisfy the demand for Catholic education], how Catholic education and the Catholic intellectual revival of the interwar years advanced hand in hand, and how, in the stormy 1960s, their partnership foundered."--hurch History"As this century and millennium draw to a close, we have reason to thank Oxford University Press and Philip Gleason of Notre Dame for offering us a critical insider's history of modern Catholic higher education in the United States over the past hundred years...[L]ikely to become a classic reference work."--The Journal of Religion"[Gleason's] dense, thorough interpretation should encourage a new generation of scholars to examine not only the Catholic story but also to blend it into a historical synthesis of American higher education."--Historical Journal of Massachusetts

From the Back Cover

Written by the leading interpreter of American Catholicism, Contending with Modernity is the first history of American Catholic higher education to examine both intellectual and institutional dimensions of the subject. Taking a narrative approach, Philip Gleason begins his account with an overview of old-style Catholic colleges in the 1800s and the internal conflicts that influenced the founding of The Catholic University of America, the first modern Catholic university. From there, Gleason depicts Catholic educators around 1900 as they began to accept modernization in the organizational sphere but rejected it in the realm of ideas and beliefs. Convinced of the truth of their religious and intellectual position, the restructured Catholic colleges grew rapidly after World War I and moved into the postwar era with enhanced self-confidence. Gleason examines trends such as "Catholic Action" and argues that the economic collapse at home during the 1930s and rise of totalitarianism in Europe furthered the critique of secularism and led to a firm Catholic commitment to educate for a "Catholic Renaissance". In the 1960s, changes in church teaching as a result of the Vatican II Council and cultural upheavals in American society reinforced the internal transformation already under way. The resulting "identity crisis", according to Gleason, demonstrates how Catholic educators have come full circle since 1900, as they once again face the task of envisioning Catholic colleges and universities as a distinctive element of higher education.

Contending With Modernity by Philip Gleason, of Notre Dame University. Book is subtitled, "Catholic Higher Education in the Twentieth Century." At the outset, Professor Gleason notes that the historiography of Catholic Higher Education is severely limited. I bought Prof. Gleason's book (from Amazon.com, by the way) since there were so very few books dealing with the history of Catholic colleges and universities in the United States. And I needed references for my MA thesis on Catholic colleges. By writing a history of Catholic higher education, from 1900 to 1995, Dr. Gleason has expanded the field. In covering this time period, the author has chosen to emphasize the struggles of Catholic colleges and universities to deal with modern ideas. These struggles were exacerbated by the suspicion within the Catholic Church raised by "Americanism" a name given to the modern forces which presented grave dangers to the Faith and identified, rightly or wrongly, with the American church. Gleason spends the first part of his book showing how that mis-identification affected American Catholic schools up until about the end of World War II; he then brings in various other historical events and figures, including the work of Dorothy Day, Fr. Curran at The Catholic University of America and, towards the end of the book, the charge of anti-intellectualism lodged by Msgr. John Tracy Ellis. Philip Gleason, however, does not raise the counter-charge by Rev. Andrew M. Greeley, the noted fiction writer and sociologist, who has found Catholic schools be just about as intellectual or anti-intellectual as other colleges and universities in the United States. In the last few pages, Prof. Gleason missed a grand opportunity to explore in greater detail the potential impact of "Ex Corde Ecclesiae", the August 1990 Constitutional Document of Pope John Paul II, on modern Catholic higher education. Some features of this document, such as the requirement for an Oath of Fidelity, have been fought on the grounds of academic freedom and autonomy for the Catholic colleges and universities (particularly by some in the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, ACCU). The author has documented his citations with about 92 pages of notes and references, making this volume a great step forward in filling the gap in the historiography of Catholic Higher Education. There are many nuggets to be mined, as, for example, if your interests is the "Great Books" approach to higher education, Dr. Gleason's book leads you to references for the attempted "Great Books" program at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California. The book is worth the price for wonderful tidbits such as that.
