Bummer--the nutrition values above the recipes seem to be incorrect. I was all excited to try the sweet potato pancakes mentioned on the cover, only to gasp at the 287g of carbs listed in the nutrition information. Using My Fitness Pal data, I added the carbs for all the ingredients and divided by 4 (there are 4 servings) and learned that it should be 31g of carbs per serving instead. That's more like it! Now I can try the recipe, but have no confidence in the nutrition information in the rest of the book. Isn't that why one would buy it--to calculate what is appropriate to eat each day? It's by fudging my data that I've sneaked into pre diabetic status in the first place!

after the shock of being diagnosed as pre diabetic, this book was a life saver both mentally and physically. I could eat a lot of foods that I thought would be forbidden. recipe directions are straight forward therefore basically quick to put together. I will be using this book a lot!

I bought this book because my doctor at the time said I was pre-diabetic. Well that scared me straight to stop eating candy and apple pie . I was on a binge that month so when I went back I was not on the border line page. so just to be on the safe side I needed to know more this is mainly a cook book a thick one at that. It does have some basic information on how to read food labels, figure out carbohydrate and sugar grams, explains cholesterol, and fiber and whole grains etc.

Since I was just diagnosed I have been looking for a book just like this one. Clear, honest with a mix of valuable information as well as the recipes.

Sent this one back. Some of the carb calculations are just plain wrong. Paper was like newsprint.

I hadn’t studied much biology since my college days 50 years ago, so this exciting book was a real eye opener. How did life actually get going on earth? Why did it take a couple of billion years before all higher forms of life got their start, and how are mitochondria the key? Why would most life in other parts of the universe likely not get beyond the level of bacteria? What do mitochondria have to do with aging, and how do we age more slowly than rats but faster than birds?Renowned British scientist and author Nick Lane explores all these questions and many more, explaining the latest research, controversies, and speculations. Lane does a very good job of explaining the basic findings and arguments to educated readers who are not trained in biology but are keen to understand what’s going on inside the life they see all around and experience in their own bodies.My interests had been more in the physical and mathematical sciences, but there’s nothing like encounters with aging that will say “Whoa – What’s Going On Here?”, especially when your doctor says, “Don’t worry, that’s just normal aging”. A heart attack, a detached retina, loss of balance – “just normal aging” - SURE! It’s like a SYNDROME, a name for something they don’t understand or can’t do much about. Or could they? - if they thought more like curious scientists exploring the universe and less like authorities stuck in the ruts of past dogmas.So Lane explains why all the anti-oxidant therapies in the world have failed to extend our life spans, despite the destruction wrecked by free radicals on mitochondrial DNA. Yet birds, with only a few changes to their DNA, avoid most of this damage and live disease-free to ripe old ages (relative to their body size). There is even a group of humans in Italy who live to 100 quite easily due to a simple genetic mutation. He identifies “uncoupling” as the possible mechanism as it causes the “respiration chain” in mitochondria to produce heat instead of free radicals when the mitochondria is at rest (not producing ATP to power the cell). The implication is that there may be better prospects for gene therapies than drug therapies in our future (at least if humanity somehow manages to survive the wrath of Gaia against the wanton destruction of a civilization drunk on fossil fuels).

Fascinating book about the evolution of cells and the role of mitochondria in allowing large eukaryote cells and multi-cellular organisms. Extremely clear descriptions of how things work, and an excellent framework for understanding issues in evolution, how sex in single-celled eukaryotes led to apoptosis in multi-cellular organisms, issues in tracking evolution using maternal mitochondrial DNA, why Aubrey de Gray's suggestion that we move mitochondrial DNA into our cell's nucleus as part of an anti-aging protocol won't work (when we can do the in-vivo gene manipulation), and how cells use reactive oxygen species as signals.The book explains a number of things I've wondered about:(1) Why does a mother's environment affect the children of her daughters? It's because the unit of growth is the cell, not just DNA, and the daughter's eggs are formed in-utero. So if the mother is stressed nutritionally early in the pregnancy, it affects her daughter's children by reducing the robustness of her daughter's eggs.(2) Why don't antioxidants increase longevity? It's because the cell uses ROS as a signal for proteins needed by the mitochondria and to grow more mitochondria, and needs a finely tuned level of internal anti-oxidant machinery in order to hear the signal, yet not be damaged by it. So taking extra Vitamin C or E reduce the internal signaling, and might cause premature apoptosis of the cell because it degrades the health of your mitochondria. This ties into studies showing that Vit C and/or E reduce the benefits of exercise, by shutting down the internal ROS signaling pathways.(3) How can we improve our own longevity? It looks like the major factor is the rate of leakage of ROS from mitochondria. So things that reduce this leakage make a big difference: (a) where possible, have your cells run on fat instead of glucose, because that reduces free electron leak from complex I, and (b) make sure you have balanced levels of omega-6 and omega-3 PUFA, as that appears to also make a significant difference (at least in mice...)There is much more, and I have a much better framework now for my research on how to optimize my health. Highly recommended!Two other books in the same class are The Fourth Phase of Water: Beyond Solid, Liquid, and Vapor, and Cells, Gels and the Engines of Life.

I cannot exprese the gratitude I feel towards Nick Lane after reading this book. This is the best science book I've ever read in my life. (I'd like to study biology but don't have the means to)Everything: The format the book is written (it's divided in small sub chapters that you can read very quickly if you don't have time, i.e. in the morning instead of a newspaper article), the way Lane explains concepts (I even learned basic biology ideas I was never able to grasp), the way he presents the ideas itself...Power, Sex, Suicide gives me the same sense of awe and admiration that Cosmos gave me the first time I saw it. I'd really wish Lane was as famous as Sagan in terms of popularizing science.He (Lane) even presents ideas he doesn't agree with, which I really loved.I'm looking forward to buying Oxygen and of course as you can see now I'm a really huge, huge Lane's fan.

This book is a little hard to understand in places. I skip over paragraphs now and then. The subject is fascinating though.

I loved this story. If a book makes me get choked up, then it is a good one because I don't cry. It was refreshing to have everything happen to a cowboy rancher and not to some man stuck on a business trip. I hate those books that have the character trying to get back home and they tell you EVERY freaking highway name, EVERY exit ramp, etc. This was just so different. The Apocalypse came to James' ranch. To his town. To his friends. The brotherhood with his ranch hands was so strong that when one of them was killed, it hurt me too. Has a good, patriotic theme running through the entire book. The author was able to reach right out to my heart strings.

This is a powerful story about faith, love and courage in a world of chaos. The main character James is a man who loves his life, his family. His faith is unwavering. When mad terrorist take over his country his faith and courage kick in and he fights back to protect his ranch, family and friends. This book is compelling and hard to put down. The love this family has is heartwarming. You will enjoy reading this story.

This is a well written story; the plot is easy to follow, and you can’t help but root for certain characters. Once I began reading this book I was reluctant to put it down, but my son required food! I really enjoy this author’s style of writing and although I received a free ARC copy via booksprout I enjoyed it so much that I purchased my own copy also. I love this genre and I love this author’s books.

This story was hopefully ahead of its time, but close enough to see that it is possible. There is evil in the world and, as in the book, we have to stick together, help one another, and somehow keep a little hope. The characters were likeable, with many catastrophes and turns to keep the reader interested. My favorite moment was when James was dying and predicted the gender of his unborn child.

This is the 2nd book I've read written James Hunt; he has done a great job at writing a good book; I will definitely be reading more of his books.The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.I received a free copy of this book via booksprout and I’m voluntarily leaving a review.

Tremendous story of courage and tenacity that I was unable to put down. I would like to think that there are still more than a few Americans with skills and values who will fight to the end to protect their families, friends, and communities. I fear that in these uncertain times, we are going to need them more than ever.

This stand alone book shows that America, if we have strong Americans that believe in freedom, the rights given in the Constitution, and in family, will win against any and all terrorists. Jamie Hunt has written a fast pace book that is easy to read and also shows that we must be prepared as a family and a country.

I absolutely loved it. I couldn't put it down. I read it straight thru. I believe this could happen as there is so much evil in the world. I cant wait to buy another book by James Hunt.

At the time I first read it, I was needing a new way of thinking about my life. Reading it caused me to take an inventory of my talents, dreams, skills, knowledge and attitudes. Having done that, I lined those beside my vocation and favorite pastimes. That review. mixed with the revelation that Guinness provides brought myself into focus in a way I had never seen myself.I began to appreciate my work as a outgrowth of who I am rather than as just what I did to make money. I began to see my interests and talents away from work in a similar way. Guinness's ideas gave a kind of legitimacy to what I am and like to do because I was permitted to see it all from the point of view of calling.There are certainly those with special gifts, whether they are writers, musicians, mathemeticians, scientists, or politicians. Because I am not one of those, I never thought of myself as special or unique or particularly important in the affairs of men. Yet, calling is that which brings purpose and direction for life and Guinness helped me see that. Even one with the meager talents and gifts that I have can make a difference in the world when what I have is married to the call that God places on every life, no matter who and where they are.Guinness starts with the premise that "there is no calling without a caller". Being that I am a Christian, I am happy to start with that beginning and already have a relationship with the Caller. But what Guinness adds to this is all that goes with that call. The call legitimizes your gifts and efforts when they are married to his purpose. Here is a tiny example. As a teenager when I was learning to play guitar and sing a bit, I had the dream that many do of playing in a rock back, having the curtain drawn back, a packed house cheering for the show to begin and playing the first notes of the music. That dream eventually came to be, but in a different form. Instead of playing in a rock band for a thousand screaming teenagers, I played in a 20-piece banjo band for a thousand blue haired ladies and gentlemen. It was no less exciting for me and represented the fulfillment of a dream. I could see how God had planted in me a desire to perform and bring pleasure to people at a certain time of life. That happened to me when I was 25 years old. At the age of 61, I am doing it still today. It is one of the ways that God gifted me and called me into his service. I am not a professional and make no money from it. I do it because it is in me to do. That is what calling is. I will always be grateful to Os Guinness and "The Call" for opening this door of purpose and understanding for me.

The Call was commended to me as a great book uncovering the true nature of calling and rescuing it from the captivity of specificity and exactitude. The commendation was abundantly fulfilled.The Call has proven to be a rich encouragement and exhortation relevant for all believers. Os Guinness relentlessly and exhaustively exhorts the believer to honor his or her call to live as a child of the King in every way possible. Having never read any works by Os Guinness I was not sure what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised but not only extremely high readability but also a comprehensive enrichment fueled by his obviously deep cultural and historical knowledge. I would venture to say a good quarter (if not third) of this book is quotation from such greats of the faith as GK Chesterson, Dorothy Sayers, Luther, Calvin, Bonhoeffer, and a very wide range of cultural and historical figures.Having finished the last fifth of the book in one sitting I find myself both emboldened and empowered by the broad context for fulfilling our call that Guinness puts forth. And by holding up so many examples from the halls of faith, Guinness encourages us that the type of calling he his suggesting has been lived over and over again in history, and many others have seen calling in much the same way he does. This is certainly no new or novel idea, but a rich and fulfilling distillation of Christian thought and life.Do not expect an exposition so much as a journey through the halls of calling's house. If you're expecting a "how to" on perceiving and fulfilling your specific occupational calling or job you will be disappointed, but this book is all the more for you. That is what I came to it for, but I have walked away with a far greater appreciation for the true calling of our God beyond specific occupational endeavors.The Call is almost certainly going to become an annual staple for me. I highly recommend it for believers in any stage of life.

all i can say is READ IT. JPII is purely amazing and Christ-like. He is full of wisdom and love. This book really shows the Catholic Church's love and respect for women of all kinds. Please read.

Broke it down after every section and helped me to understand my femininity. Love, love, love! Read it and then give to all your girlfriends!

My daughter had asked for this book as a Christmas or birthday gift. She was pleased when I got it for her; but even more pleased with the content, it's presentation and daily usefulness of readings and meditations. I and several others are waiting for a turn to read it.

True Feminism and Hope for the Future

In August 1988, the Pope released an Apostolic Letter entitled On the Dignity and Vocation of Women. It was revolutionary at the time, because it was the first papal document that addressed women and their unique role, not only in the Church, but in the world. Now, almost 30 years later, this document is just as relevant, if not more so.The document begins by talking about the timeliness of this Apostolic Letter. Pope John Paul II then explains how this topic was brought to light both in and before Vatican II. He reflects on the recent female Doctors of the Church and discusses his encyclical Redemptoris Mater. Part II reflects on Mary the Mother of God (Theotokos). In this section, he reflects on the fact that a woman (Mary) was at the center of salvation, because it was through her Fiat that Jesus came into the world. He also talks about how Mary is the ultimate example of a woman and her vocation. Part III takes us back to Genesis and man being made in God's Image. Part IV compares Eve and Mary. Part V focuses on Jesus Christ and His interaction with women. This is the most fascinating section as it discusses the value which He placed on them, how it was uncommon for that time, and how they were the first witnesses to the Resurrection. Part VI addresses motherhood and virginity, which are mentioned hand in hand in Christ's teaching, but share a distinctness to them as well. Part VII and VIII talk about the Bride of Christ and love.There has been a lot of talk about feminism lately, but that is false feminism. If you want to understand the true beauty of women and their vocation, I highly recommend this book. It not only contains the Pope's words, but reflections and points to ponder as well. Be sure to check out this book and other anniversary editions of Pope John Paul II's writings.

As a woman in today's society, I found this book so refreshing and so enlightening. No writer has ever approached the subject of feminism so intelligently and with such true divine inspiration. Any man or woman would enjoy reading this and find it full of truth and wisdom. It's especially encouraging for women today-- we who can be so undervalued and disrespected from Coors Light commercials that make us out to be undignified objects' of men's pleasure to groups like NARAL who insist that a mother's dignity is elevated by the ability to choose between herself and her child. Women are dignified, compassionate, strong creatures, and I think John Paul II captures this so eloquently in this apostolic letter.
