Written by the leading interpreter of American Catholicism, Contending with Modernity is the first history of American Catholic higher education to examine both intellectual and institutional dimensions of the subject. Taking a narrative approach, Philip Gleason begins his account with an overview of old-style Catholic colleges in the 1800s and the internal conflicts that influenced the founding of The Catholic University of America, the first modern Catholic university. From there, Gleason depicts Catholic educators around 1900 as they began to accept modernization in the organizational sphere but rejected it in the realm of ideas and beliefs. Convinced of the truth of their religious and intellectual position, the restructured Catholic colleges grew rapidly after World War I and moved into the postwar era with enhanced self-confidence. Gleason examines trends such as "Catholic Action" and argues that the economic collapse at home during the 1930s and rise of totalitarianism in Europe furthered the critique of secularism and led to a firm Catholic commitment to educate for a "Catholic Renaissance". In the 1960s, changes in church teaching as a result of the Vatican II Council and cultural upheavals in American society reinforced the internal transformation already under way. The resulting "identity crisis", according to Gleason, demonstrates how Catholic educators have come full circle since 1900, as they once again face the task of envisioning Catholic colleges and universities as a distinctive element of higher education.

Contending With Modernity by Philip Gleason, of Notre Dame University. Book is subtitled, "Catholic Higher Education in the Twentieth Century." At the outset, Professor Gleason notes that the historiography of Catholic Higher Education is severely limited. I bought Prof. Gleason's book (from Amazon.com, by the way) since there were so very few books dealing with the history of Catholic colleges and universities in the United States. And I needed references for my MA thesis on Catholic colleges. By writing a history of Catholic higher education, from 1900 to 1995, Dr. Gleason has expanded the field. In covering this time period, the author has chosen to emphasize the struggles of Catholic colleges and universities to deal with modern ideas. These struggles were exacerbated by the suspicion within the Catholic Church raised by "Americanism" a name given to the modern forces which presented grave dangers to the Faith and identified, rightly or wrongly, with the American church. Gleason spends the first part of his book showing how that mis-identification affected American Catholic schools up until about the end of World War II; he then brings in various other historical events and figures, including the work of Dorothy Day, Fr. Curran at The Catholic University of America and, towards the end of the book, the charge of anti-intellectualism lodged by Msgr. John Tracy Ellis. Philip Gleason, however, does not raise the counter-charge by Rev. Andrew M. Greeley, the noted fiction writer and sociologist, who has found Catholic schools be just about as intellectual or anti-intellectual as other colleges and universities in the United States. In the last few pages, Prof. Gleason missed a grand opportunity to explore in greater detail the potential impact of "Ex Corde Ecclesiae", the August 1990 Constitutional Document of Pope John Paul II, on modern Catholic higher education. Some features of this document, such as the requirement for an Oath of Fidelity, have been fought on the grounds of academic freedom and autonomy for the Catholic colleges and universities (particularly by some in the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, ACCU). The author has documented his citations with about 92 pages of notes and references, making this volume a great step forward in filling the gap in the historiography of Catholic Higher Education. The writing is simple and plain spoken but the subject matter eye opening. The author can be a bit redundant about his size and weight and sunrise stories yet that still didn't temper the fascination I felt reading of his exploits as a game warden. He was definitely passionate and committed to his 'purpose', as well as just plain gutsy in some of his means and methods. The Kindle edition I read was of poor quality. I have read stories of the poor editing done with Kindle editions and being new to this format haven't had the experience of some readers but I see what they mean after this book. I got accustomed to it but found it surprising, like others have, that more care isn't taken in the conversion process. With that said however, the story stands entirely on its own as a good read and I would recommend it.

I love the outdoors, so I was fascinated by Terry's descriptions of life as a game warden in northern California. He describes the scenery vividly but without going over the top, and paints hilarious pictures of the criminals he catches, whether they're crazy, hardened, or ordinary people making a simple mistake. The stories show something really interesting, namely Terry's growth as a person and as a professional during his decades of service. We can see his attitudes and actions change as the events unfold, making him a dynamic character in his own autobiography. That, in my opinion, is what sets the book head and shoulders above all the other "interesting people doing interesting things" books that show up on Amazon. Read it if you love the outdoors, law enforcement, true-crime stories, or adventure.

This is an interesting read. It was eye-openning for me. I didn't realize the number of poachers out there. I guess I've always chosen to follow the rules and hunt and fish with only those who believe in doing the same. I was raised to respect wildlife and the outdoors and thought all, or at least most sportsmen were. Given this book won a National Outdoor Book Award, I thought the writing would be better. I rated it four stars and not five because the writing is somewhat elementary and at times repetitious. Mr. Grosz's "size" and "eyes" are sometimes too close together. If you can get past that, it's an interesting read.

I've been reading this mostly when I travel because each chapter is a well contained story of its own, perfect for small bites.The story telling is great. You really get drawn into the situations Terry got into and the book sort of feels like the guy is sitting in front of you around a table telling you his wild tales life brought his way. It's incredibly expressive and personal.This book also gave me great insight into poachers and their impact on wildlife. I've always hung out with people who get properly licensed and follow the rules, so this was very enlightening. I'm sad that these stories exist to be told but hope that my own wildlife rich state has dedicated champions such as Terry protecting our wildlife.

I very seldom write a four or five star review for any book, but this one is definitely worth reading or listening to in audio. Absolutely held my interest. I was lucky enough to get the book when it was free and then noticed that I could buy the audio version for $1.99. The narration is superb. Just wish there were more titles of this author out in audiobook format. Hopefully Amazon and Audible are listening.

I plan on becoming a California Fish and Game Warrden myself. This book in my opinion gives great stories of how he went through his years of a California Fish and Game Warrden. Really recommend this book to the people who want to learn more of what Fish and Game Warrden go through on a daily task or to a person like myself who would like to become a Fish and Game Warrden and to know what to expect out in the field.

Excellent stories from a legendary conservation officer during the early years of his career, when he was a State Game Warden. Some of these stories were re-created in a series "The Wildlife Wars", which has been shown on the Animal Planet. You won't want to miss the chapter about "The one that didn't get away". Reading this book was even better for me because I briefly worked with Mr. Grosz near the end of his career.

It was just an ok read for me. What you would expect from a warden doing his job. He mentions how big he is quite a lot and that was disappointing to me. Once or maybe twice was enough.

My 2-star review is only concerning the dryness of the content. This book was required for a class, and after attempting to read about three pages, it lost me immediately. I'm an avid reader, so, frankly...I'm not hard to please (unless it's horrible writing). But this was simply too dry and boring for me. This is also coming from someone who typically 'likes' reading textbooks (just ask my friends). I realize this book has lots of relevant and necessary content, but I could not get through more than three pages. And when I got to class, every single one of my classmates (MSW program) said the same thing. Boring, and way too confusing. The book arrived in excellent condition, and the process to rent it was wonderful. Just...zzzzzz (definitely recommend if you need something to help you fall asleep with!).

For the price, this book was not very effective or thorough. I had to buy this book for a second year graduate research class and I found it to be too simple. There was very little explanation and I did not feel as though I received a proper introduction to program evaluation from this book alone. It was useful for brief tune-ups throughout the semester but I would not recommend this book as a stand-alone tool for future graduate professors to use for classes. I believe this book would have better suited an undergraduate class.On a more positive note, it is very simple to read and incorporates a fair amount of methodological approaches to program evaluation. I rated it 3 stars because it did not live up to the hype and it was too simplistic for anyone to actually finish reading it know how to completely evaluate a program efficiently. It was also ineffective for my research proposal for the class as I used an appreciative inquiry framework for my methodology and the book did not incorporate appreciative inquiry at all, even though it has been gaining popularity within the past 20 years. Overall, not very helpful and felt like they sacrificed quality for quantity (it is a very short textbook).

I thought the book was really helpful with their step by step process in conducting tests on SPSS. Definitely a lot better than many other stats texts I have read.

Our professor choose this book for education. I would only recommend it for the medical field.

Very poor quality with small print on the Fire device. It will not work on the Kindle Cloud Reader. Do not waste your money, get the book in print or on the Google book app.

The author and his contributor obviously have in-depth knowledge of the writer's world..Many of the 103 ideas are obvious - from writing blogs to beginning a career in the corporate world, from becoming a grant writer to writing your own eBook. There are also many not-so-obvious ideas such as becoming a lawyer, a manual writer or a ghostwriter.Each idea is well explained and supported by sections on "How to Break In", "What You Can Expect to Earn" and "Street-Smart Advice."So if you, like me, have years of experience writing books, manuals, proposals and sales letters I still think you will see some ideas you'd not though of - which piggy-back on each other or on what you are already doing. If you are, say, in college, just graduated or are wondering if there is a part-time or full-time income out there for you that will revolve around your writing skills I recommend this book, not only for the ideas and down to earth comments but also for the many internet links to organizations that might be of value to you.

Writing is easy, marketing is hard. That is one thing I've found out. And especially when I have to market ME. I am not a good self-promoter and so I avoid it. Part of the problem is that I am not sure where to start. Scott Martin's book helped take some of the mystery out of marketing for me. It is an easy read, chocked full of ideas on what to do to earn some $ and how to do it.He literally goes down the list of 103 different ways that the reader can turn their writing skills into a steady income flow. Is it easy to do? NO, of course not. But it can be done and has been and will again by those folks who know how to start and are able to follow through. Each of the 103 sections explains a bit about the method, how to break into the field, what you can expect to earn, some have sections called Street Smart Advice and some list the top job boards for that field. Plenty of links to other sites and places that offer positions or seek people with writing skills.You can breeze through the book quickly and skip the sections that you have no aptitude in. I liked the business oriented stuff like Chapter 44-Writing for Ebay, 48-Non-fiction writer, 75-Corporate histories writer and 99-Business Appraiser. The first chapter about blog writing was a real eye opener as well and is something anyone could start doing immediately. I skipped the music-oriented chapters because I can barely play the radio or recognize a musical instrument when I see one so not every chapter helped me. But I found the ones that did and those made the book well worth the price. If you need some help getting ideas and marketing yourself, this is a keeper.

I was amazed at just how many opportunities there are to make money as a professional writer. This book has definitely ignited my passion for writing and pursuing a freelance career. There were numerous creative opportunities that I had never considered. Each writing opportunity includes helpful information on how to break into the field, what you can expect to earn, and insider tips. This is an excellent resource that I will continue to refer to.

I have been freelance writing for several years, but this book opened my mind to unexplored options and avenues of potential income. I love the "Street Smarts" sections and action points. The title is well written and the information highly actionable. I wish I would have found it several years ago.Anyone who writes for either a living or as an extra source of income will benefit from the insights shared within.

Not the amount of detail I was expecting.

Ok, I admit it...I am a struggling author and while I have a couple of books on Amazon, I am far from making a living off of my craft. Mr. Martin has created a mammoth compendium of outlets to write for including a few dozen I would never have considered.This is not a rosy, Pollyanna approach to writing. Mr. Martin takes each of the 103 writing fields and points out the strengths and challenges to each, how much one might earn and how and where to look for more detailed information on breaking into each.For my part, I had never even thought about most of these and the list is brilliant!! This is the bargain of the week and required reading for anyone seriously considering trying to make a few extra dollars to someone seeking a Full Time serious income. I am, now after reading this fine book, feeling very optimistic about the field.After reading 103 Ways to Earn Money as a Professional Writer, I would say jump in....the waters fine. Thanks Scott!!

This book is strictly multiple choice test questions, no explanations for students to work through on their own. The QR codes that accompany each week's questions are supposed to explain each item, but I couldn't even watch past week 1 day 1 due to the narrator incorrectly reading numbers. He uses the word 'and' when he gets to a comma which makes him sound incompetent as a math guide. It also goes so fast that a child would constantly have to back up and listen again.

I was browsing for extra practice for my 5th grader. I was looking for something different from homework from school,something challenging, something like not new separate curriculum and not too expensive.Just before i so similar but old book in our public library and viola! I found this one! The book has 2 parts. Also you can use video explanation, if you need.Each page of the book has tasks for the day and tips and 5th day of the week has an assessment. Also there is a huge assessment at the end of the book. There are answers at the end as well(relief for doubtful and busy parents).The book 1 has an multiple choice and part 2 has free response. You could choose either one or combine both parts for better result.It is good for homeschooling, with online-video explanation it covers everything. It is not easy, on some questions you have to think twice, it is good for brain storm.

About one month ago I ordered four math books published by Argo Brothers Publishing – Math 3rd Grade Common Core Workbook (Part 1 and Part 2), and Math 5th Grade Common Core Workbook (Part 1 and Part 2). Being a Math Tutor I always check different additional sources to help my students to be successful on the tests, especially based on Common Core. Usually I search Internet looking for Test Preparation information, and then compiling worksheets for different topics. It is hard work, because there is a lot of outdated information with different point of view on the same subject. I found almost everything I need in those books! Part 1 has a hundreds multiple choice questions which cover different topics, and Part 2 requires writing answers, which is much harder, and makes a student to analyze, and formulate his answer in proper way. Guessing doesn’t work! All the books are well structured based by days and weeks, which can help with the planning of studying. I started to utilize those books in my tutoring process, and I’m very happy with the result – it saves my time and effort, and I have big source of worksheets wit the answer keys in one place! I would recommend those books to parents of my students as a perfect guide to be successful on Common Core exams. I’d like to order the book Math 7th Grade Common Core Workbook (Part 1 and Part 2) in near future.

I recommend this book for practice problems and getting prepared for common core math. The layout is very convenient and organized for daily math solving problems. I am finding the book very useful in understanding concepts needed for passing the common core exam. There are problems provided for each day for 5 days a week, and answers are provided at the end of the book. A very useful feature is the "Tip of the day" which provides a sentence or two on vital concepts for solving problems. I highly recommend this book for any 5th grader who needs the extra practice to succeed.

I recommend this book (Argo Brothers Common Core Math Workbook Multiple Choice, 5th grade) for regular math practice and to help prepare for the common core tests. It provides 5-6 questions per page, which is a good amount for eveyday practice, and the contents are well-organized and easy to follow. In my opinion, you need to solve many math problems to master math and this workbook allows a lot of practice for problems that my sons are learning in school. I also bought a “Free Response” workbook also from Argo Brothers, so that they can practice different types of math problems.

I definitely recommend this book (Part I: Multiple Choice) and Part II: Free Response for daily math practice. They are well organized and provide fairly large number of exercises, which is important for successful learning. These books serve me as a very good companion for school curriculum.

My daughter is in 5th grade and advanced in math, however in project based school they either have different subject order or even omit subjects. So far we really enjoy this book, it allows my bilingual to practice written (paragraph) questions, make sure all 5th grade subjects are covered and it really shows problem areas and already mastered ones.

I use this book to tutor students in math. I like the format, where the lessons are divided weekly into five days. There are Assessment problems at the end of each week's lesson and the subsequent lessons include review from previous weeks. I'd recommend pairing this with the Free Response book, but be aware that some questions are recycled. Argo brothers did not even bother changing the numbers/diagrams on some problems.

It has been quite some time since I read the first book in this series but I immediately fell into the story again. I love the juxtaposition of a modern day historian's discovery of the papers of Regency heroes and heroines with the story of the heroes and heroines as they were living their story.I found many parts of the story to be laugh-out-loud funny. In fact, I was laughing so hard that I had to put down the book to wipe my eyes. The situations as two rank amateurs get involved in uncovering a dastardly French agent were both thrilling and amusing. I especially liked the friends-to-lovers plot as Henrietta and Miles each realize that their long-standing friendship was growing into something more but who don't realize or believe that the other has come to the same realization.I like the modern parts of the story too which has Eloise wondering very much about Colin Selwick who is definitely a man of mystery. I am eager to carry on with this series to find out what happens next in 1803 and also what happens next for Eloise and Colin.

Okay, so it's kind of indulgent, but I really enjoy this series. They will never be great literature, but it's a fun story with dynamic characters and some excellent turns of phrase, and it follows along neatly in the footsteps of its predecessor, The Pink Carnation, as well as The Scarlet Pimpernel, albeit with a little more explicit content. As in the first book, there is a very explicit (multiple pages long) sex scene between a married couple, and it should NOT be read by children (says the girl who was accidentally loaned it by a family friend in seventh grade), but it is an enjoyable story that doesn't take itself too seriously, and the premise is way cool. I mean, female spies in the Napoleonic Wars? It doesn't get much cooler than that. This is totally wish-fulfillment historical chick lit (and I do NOT mean the sex scenes here, but the adventure part), and although I've seen it get some pretty bad press, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I am pretty choosy about books. The frame story makes it even cooler, and honestly, I'm just waiting for them to be made into movies.P.S. Thankfully, Lauren Willig stopped writing excruciatingly detailed sex scenes after the second book (this one). Something to look forward to. (:

Miles and Henrietta may be more bumbling as spies than the Pink Carnation and the Purple Gentian, but they just prove that anyone can be of service to their country if their hearts are in the right place! And, of course, they were a little distracted by the whole falling in love thing. They made a very cute couple!I enjoyed how the definitions from the Pink Carnation's code book at the beginning of each chapter informed what would happen in the chapter. The double meanings were great. And I liked how the modern-day story tied in with what was going on in the past.My only complaint is that the romance between Eloise and Colin in the present-day is proceeding very slowly. Guess I'll just have to continue with the rest of the series to see where they end up.

This is the second in the Pink Carnation series and I am finding these books very enjoyable. While they have romance, they also feature female adventurers, intrigue, and quite a bit of humor. These aren't meant for someone looking for a serious historical read or pure romantic fiction. These books are like delicious junk food that must occasionally be indulged in. I'd probably be bored if I read them straight through so I am saving them for when i need something light to cheer me up.

Very good characters and an enjoyable read. I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series.

Yet again, Ms. Willig impressed me with her lighthearted take on historical romance/mystery! Although I read these books in the completely WRONG order (first Emerald Ring, then Pink Carnationa, and finally Black Tulip), I was taken in by all of them--this one no less than the others. Although I felt that the "oh no heroine might be compromised marry her off quickly" story line was somewhat repetitive between this installment and Emerald Ring, the stories of Henrietta and Miles vs. Letty and Geoff were different enough to keep me intrigued. I'll just say that I can't wait for the 4th Pink Carnation novel!

I really liked the Miles and Hen characters in the first book, and looked forward to seeing their relationship evolve, and of course more great humor and spying, and more modern romance with our historian and Colin. My complaint with the first book was that Amy and Richard seemed too stupid to be successful as spies. Perhaps my complaint was heard, as some of the outlandishness was toned back, perhaps at the cost of humor. Plot-wise, quite good, but I also got the sense that the author was stretching content to prepare for a third book. This book needed more Colin, I think. I did not laugh uncontrollably at this book, or feel as compelled to read it all in one sitting. I wish I'd waited for the paperback--tradesize like the first one.

I like how the characters are strong willed and willing to stand up for themselves...female and male.
