I bought this book for my son some years back when he was just becoming interested in photography. The book was an excellent shared experience for both of us, and it's a book that we still have.To say that this title is the definitive authority on the history of the art and craft of photography would be a stretch, but it's an excellent start for younger people who are just beginning to show interest in photography. Author Sandler take us from the early days of Louis Daguerre, the French physicist and artist who invented the daguerreotype process of photography, and introduces us to George Eastman, the American innovator who founded the Eastman Kodak Company, invented roll film, and helped to bring photography to the masses. We meet such pioneering photographers as Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Margaret Bourke-White, and others, each who played an important part in the growth of the art and science that we know as photography today. The images on these pages are iconic.If there was anything to fault in this book is that it just barely touches on digital photography and digital image manipulation. The author touches on Fuji and Sony introducing the first digital cameras for consumer use and the 1990 introduction of Adobe Photoshop, but that's about where it stops. It's a shame that Martin Sandler hasn't updated this title, as the way that he presents his topics can be quite engaging.As an interesting side note, this reader had a chance a few months ago to peruse through Photography: An Illustrated History (Oxford Illustrated Histories) in the Kindle edition, and it was quite well done, with nicely done photos and images from the earlier printed book. This may be the best way to buy this book if you have a Kindle.Martin Sandler continues to write informative books for young adults. His Kennedy Through the Lens: How Photography and Television Revealed and Shaped an Extraordinary Leader was released in 2011, and it provides us with a unique photographic insight into the life of this American president as part of his ongoing "Through the Lens" series.Apart from the lack of information on the digital cameras of today, Photography: An Illustrated History is an excellent book, and one that is truly an excellent introduction to the roots of photography for young adults.9/3/2012

The Kindle includes all the pictures and the color ones are in color. The page layout is similar to the printed book and is very usable. This book is a great bargain on the Kindle. It is full of great photos from famous photographers.

I like Sandlers history. He tells a fluent story. He describes the evolution through talking about the persons making the discoveries and the photographers developing seeing. There are quotes and backgrounds. This sets his book apart from others I've read. It makes it a lively and interesting read and the history is easier to remember.Every page has excellent reproductions, even the index pages.

Concise but very interesting. Lots of photos! A quick read and covers lots of relevant material for its short length.

This book is full of interesting facts about cameras. If you enjoy photography and find it neat, you will love this book. I found it intriguing how they have evolved from a box where you had to trace the image, to being able to capture light and color all from the push of a button. You should really give this book a shot! Why? Because odds are you have a camera (smart phone) in your pocket, and you don't know as much about it as you think.

Was interested in this until I read the comments. $44 for a compilation of other writers work put together by someone embroiled in a cheating scandal. Ironic. And not in an Alannis Morrisett kind of way.

This collection of essays from over 30 nationally significant authors looks at sports and ethics in depth, and is a serious effort. Broad topics include Sport and Education, Sport and Sportspersonship, Sport and Competition, Sport and Drugs, Sport and Violence, Sport and Gender, Sport and Racial Issues, and Sport and Role Models. For those who love or hate sport, this book will add insight as to why.

Very insightful and an outstanding analysis of a complex topic. A must read for anyone with any interest on this issue. Jan is probably the leading authority on this topic.

Ignore hit-and-run attacks from NC State representatives. They never even read the book but still cannot refrain from trying to disparage the University of North Carolina.

I will admit that I haven't read this book, and have no idea if it is any good. However, there is an organized attack on it on the NC State message boards, and the 1 star reviews below are part of that attack. Totally unconscionable.

Pathetic that grown people would attempt to tear down an EDITOR of a book based on their bias due to ATHLETIC and INSTITUTIONAL inferiority that has continued since time immemorial. You can look at these reviews and get a picture of the sad and desperate nature of the NC state fan base, who will stop at nothing to tear down anything even remotely related to UNC, while their own school of choice is an afterthought at best. Turn off the computer and spend some time with your families. Or read this book and learn something.

This book is printed on high quality paper, the publisher took great care in selecting all of the fonts used, and the great majority of the words are spelled correctly. There is no truth to the rumor that if you buy this book at full price, it comes with a diploma inside.

How refreshing to learn about ethics from a woman who organized a phony department at her university in order to keep athletes eligible. One that conducted no-show classes, held "independent studies" in which no work was done, and fabricated grade changes on legitimate classes. Then instructed her colleagues to change the wording of an internal investigation (which was a sham in itself) so as not to rouse further suspicion from the NCAA.It is fitting that the cover features an athlete tripping over their own feet. UNC has tangled itself into a web of attempted misdirection and lies - first claiming that the AFAM scandal is academic rather than athletic in order to protect its beloved banners, then realizing it has obliterated whatever credibility it might have had as a place of higher learning.This book should be categorized under fiction. When I'm done reading, I'll start on "Financial Planning 101," written by Bernie Madoff.

The eBook and the version of the paperback showing the two eyes in a frame are not the Kaufmann translation. This translation is OK, but you should know that the product information is incorrect.Additionally, the two versions I refer to use ALL CAPS instead of italics. Nietzsche loves his italics, especially in BGE. It's like he's screaming every other sentence.

This is the third book I've read of Nietzsche's. The first was a collection from various writings, and the second was "The Anti-Christ." Beyond Good and Evil was Nietzsche's attempt to summarize his entire philosophy into one book. I don't know if I'd ever call anything Nietzsche wrote a summary, but this book does lay out his principles in black-and-white, and it did help me put some of the pieces together.Below are a few of my takeaways. It's not a summary, because I don't even know if that's possible. So I just wanted to share a few things I've picked up on.On the will to power:If modern (nineteenth century) man is no longer going to believe in God, or at least if they're going to tone down His influence a bit, the next logical step for them was the concept of free will. In a post-enlightenment world, people were trying to understand if there really is a God pulling our strings like puppets. If they weren't going to believe that, the next logical step was free will. Nietzsche rejects free will and instead believes in the will to power. Essentially the will to power is his phrase that means people should aim to take power over themselves and create a "superman" or "overman" out of themselves. Nietzsche sees this as an alternative to the concept of free will.On religion -Another thing that I noticed about Nietzsche after reading a fair bit of his work is that, as critical as he is of Christianity, he seems to have a bit of an affinity for Buddhism, or at least the principles of Buddhism. Buddhism's primary concept is "life is suffering," right? Nietzsche writes extensively about suffering as well, arguing in part that the cause of all great human advancement is suffering. In the Anti-Christ, he often points out that Buddhism is better than Christianity. To be fair, there was a pretty short list of things that weren't better than Christianity, according to Nietzsche.I love the short epigrams and how Nietzsche is capable of concentrating so much meaning into such few words-"Blessed be the forgetful: for they forget their stupidities, too.""Whoever reaches his ideal transcends 'eo ipso.'""'Where the tree of knowledge stands, there is always Paradise': thus speak the oldest and the youngest serpents."*eo ipso = thereby

This ebook is illegible. Someone just did an OCR scan of an existing translation, without fixing any of the problems. About once a sentence, two or more words are crammed together likethis.

Great translation by Judith Norman! I much prefer it to the standard Walter Kaufmann translation.

The written material in this book is acceptable but the book itself, that being the page is not upon opening the book I discovered this. The first three pages had the top right-hand corner are bent to an angle as to where they are not attached to the binding and thus make an indent into the cover of the book which ruins the pristine and beautiful image on the cover with a bulge that is clearly visible. I request a refund or at the very least new copy of this book that is free of misprints.

Terrible print job, Create Space. Margins are microscopic, spacing is awful, text is crammed in so tightly I need reading glasses. Buy any other copy.Good words, bad publisher.

I can merely say I have read it 7 times in the last two years and each time I gain a new insight into Nietzsche's thoughts about how humans can live joyful, productive lives in the face of constant reminders that the world and existence are unpredictable, cruel, often vicious and threatening, The ideas presented here are expanded in his later work.He has a terrific sense of humor. I prefer Walter Kaufmann's translations.

Nietzsche was brilliantly crazy or crazy brilliant, perhaps it was both. Not an obvious genius, but his wisdom is counter-intuitive and worthy of reflection. He was perhaps the most brilliant philosopher of his time, certainly not the most conventional--but arguably the most sagacious about many matters. It is a shame that he descended into madness. He is not to be read quickly, because in so doing you will miss the point. Worth reading and reflecting on, particularly if you study philosophy seriously.

This Book of Nonsense is very amusing. Witty limericks and other verses. The illustrations match the verses perfectly. All done by a really good author in brilliant humour. Makes you smile and somtimes laugh aloud.

The book itself has three sections: Absurd ABC, Crazy Colors (all limericks include a reference to color), and Funny Faces (primarily noses). All vintage Lear.The advantage of this particular volume is the cd which contains a reading of all the material in the book with a delightful musical accompaniment and a visual extension of drawings for the computer with similar musical accompaniment - it includes whimsical plants, a series of cats etc.An excellent edition of a small portion of Lear's work.

This is a work of art. The book itself is quite simple, but the CD-ROM is absolutely charming - a combination of simple yet sophisticated animations, incredible music and narration.
