It's amazing how a book published in 2009 can be so skewed in terms of accuracy. Characters in the story wear outfits that belonged to historical periods that were hundreds of years apart, or not Chinese at all! Great for critical analysis. Definitely won't recomment it unless you are aware of the flaws of illustrations and information.

This was a great book to engage 4-5 years old in the celebration of the Mid Autumn Festival as well as introduce them to the Chinese culture.The pictures were wonderful, conveyed the story and the emotions well.The story was interesting enough to keep the kids engaged. I loved the repetitive use of the shopping list! When I was reading to a group of kids, I got the kids to help me remember the last item. "PEANUTS!!" they all shouted.Alas, it may be too long/complicated for 3 years old, I started loosing a few of them half way through.

This book was purchased for a multicultural theme kit. It was perfect! The story really teaches a valuable lesson about selflessness while introducing children to an experience in a Chinese market. Lin Yi is a character that children can relate to and the illustrations are beautifully done. I read it to my son and he was mesmerized by the pictures! I love this story- it speaks right to the heart of the children and myself.

My five-year olds and I really enjoy this book. The illustrations are beautifully done, and the story is nice. I appreciate that the paperback cover and pages are of a good, sturdy quality. At the end there are instructions for making a paper lantern, which is a nice, simple activity to tie in.

I sent this book to a beloved child, 3 years old. His Mother is from China. She loved it as much as he did. The story took her back to her childhood memories of China, paper lanterns and moon celebrations. It prompted her to make paper lanterns with her son. She loved the story of the thoughtfulness and cleverness of the main character, Lin Yi. Her son wanted to read the book over and over. It gave me a warm feeling to know that the story was not only enjoyable and educational but had that wonderful quality of letting loose memories that warmed the heart. My friend told me that she could hardly believe that the story was not written by someone from China, so factual and correct were the descriptions. It is certainly a book to treasure.

About the Author

Farshid Moussavi is an internationally acclaimed architect and Professor in Practice of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She was previously co-founder of the London-based Foreign Office Architects (FOA). Moussavi has completed her first U.S. commission, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland (2012), its installation at the 13th Architecture Biennale in Venice (2012), and The Victoria Beckham Flagship Store in London (2014), and she is currently working on a wide range of prestigious international projects including residential complexes in the La Défense district of Paris and in Montpellier, as well as a department store in Paris, France; and an office complex in the City of London, UK.

I purchased this book after a fellow colleague recommended it to me and I must say it's become one of my favorite books because of its explicit and clear way of explaining the concepts of the buildings selected. All architecture books should be written this way. Farshid did a great job of validating her standpoint of ornament... A concept that has been re-defined in this book.

There isn't any perceived function of ornament..Basically the only function is "EFFECT" and that's what the whole book pretty much talks aboutvery nice drawings though and diagrams.But the thesis is a bit meh..or rather just not very profound.A person who should write a book like this is either REM or Bjarke Ingels

I remember when this book first came out. Much like the big book of AA, many wondered about it and what it all meant. Eventually we started meetings and in the beginning we just read the book at the meeting and discussed it. Then we broke into various groups according to the character you were, or thought you were, based upon your birth order. Eventually each of us got to know what that meant and how we could deal with those understandings. Then we began to understand what to do with our lives.There were the nay-sayers wondering around trying to tell everyone that we were at fault for being alcoholics and that we didn't need to go around blaming others for what we did. But why did we act like we did, do what we did, and what about the people who didn't drink but acted just like us?Ahhhh. . . but you wouldn't understand all that if you had not read the book, now would you? And there is too much information to explain it here. And the first bunch of times you read it, you might have a wee bit of denial in your thoughts. . . But in the end, this book will lead to understanding, enrichment and healthy growth for those who dare to read its prose. And who knows, it might just save your life? Wow! Where to start. I have to say this has been one of the most amazing books I've read this year. It has some really unique stuff in it. And talk about a wild ride, there was never a dull moment. I wish it would be made into a movie. It would be better than Harry Potter! I know the excerpt read like it was mainly focused on Sloan, but there was just as much, if not more, about Jack in it. I absolutely loved the characters. Jack and his father, Marcus, have been asked by the queen to go to the Outlands to hunt down a creature that is killing residents. Jack and Marcus are Sorcerers and the best at tracking. Aereth is also chosen for the journey. He was once an inspector in New Hope where the Queen resides. You will love Sloan's character. At first I was thinking, "Oh no, not another female heroine in an Urban Fantasy!" Those are a dime a dozen. But no, this is nothing like your average Urban Fantasy these days. I was reading until 3am and on such an emotional high after the end that I couldn't sleep. There were times I had to stop and reread because I was so in awe at what was happening. Things I thought for sure I knew was going on, only to find out I was way off. It was great! During the first part they have tracked a creature you think you know what it is. But it's something I would've never guessed. It blew my mind. How does this author dream up this stuff? He's amazing! And the things the ragtag team encounter along the way are something else. This reads like an alternate reality. Jack has always lived in the Outlands so he has never been to the city of New Hope. He gets to see the inventions of Edison and his Mage powered engines, like the locomotive. I felt like we were in the dark ages coming to the future. His adventures lead him to steel horses, lol. Or, I think they also called them mage powered bicycles. It's like different realms come together. It all makes sense though and is very well written. The town of Burrow Den, where creature has been attacking, is so strange. You will meet some odd people there. And this opens up a whole new can of worms. We are getting set up for some really great adventures in the next books. I can't wait to find out what lies ahead! Don't worry, there's not a cliff hanger at the end. The mission gets completed, but we also discover some new things that are tied to it. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Loved some of Yanez's other works. Wanted to like this very much, since series I haven't read by authors I like are a rarity these days. It's...okay, I guess. Feels like it's geared towards a twelve-year-old audience. Short, choppy sentences, the book didn't flow well, and characters that read like basic tropes. Rampant feminism laughs at breaking a man's kneecaps! Troubled alcoholic with a dark past beats up soldiers and does a favor for a friend! A father-son team of magicians is ambushed by soldiers who 'escort' them to a city called, and I kid you not, New Hope. Come see what happens next! After some chapters, I find myself with no desire to turn another page. Read the Gateway to the Galaxy series, skip this one.

Not certain why "The Vampire Project" series is called such, but this is the best/fun book I've read in a while, and I read a LOT. I'm already into book 2 of the series. Excellent blend of non-stop action while world building AND filling out diverse and interesting characters. I highly recommend, just don't expect "vampires" in the traditional sense.

Wonderful story. Fast paced, well written. Totally enjoyable. Great read. Fun for all readers. Harry potter vs werewolves and vampires.

This is a good book. Like the other reviewer, this would be a good movie. As soon as I post this I am getting the next book.

From start to finish this story was action packed. I love when a book moves forward without having stalls in the action. There is plenty of mystery to go around and great finish for book one. I look forward to the next story.

This is the only book to consult for how to use CORBA with C++. It handles all the tough topics and describes them in a clear, understandable way.

I have worked extensively on ORB development, and I can honestly say that this is the only book I have seen that I refer to regularly other than the CORBA spec. It is the only text that is (mostly) current with the spec, and it provides real insights into many frequently asked CORBA questions, such as object reference identity and persistence, memory management, and the POA.Most ORBs don't have the POA yet; they will by mid-2000. It was an important and correct decision by the authors to include it instead of the BOA, most of the details of which are vendor-specific anyway (that's why the POA exists). Note to BOA lovers: sorry, the BOA is no longer part of the spec. ORB vendors are free to keep it around, and many do, but it's only because they're nice. The POA is so vastly superior that the only reason you would use the BOA is if you have an existing code base to maintain.This is not a book for beginners, grazers, or wanna-bes; it is a book for serious, working practitioners, and it works best as a reference (although you can read it cover to cover). It is also C++-specific; it is the best CORBA book available for any language, but programmers who don't know the CORBA interface language mappings in both C++ and another language will not know which parts are C++-specific and may be confused or frustrated. The CORBA C++ mapping is by far the most complex, so it makes sense to do this one, but be forewarned that the early chapters on the C++ language mapping will be of marginal use if you are not a C++ programmer. The POA section makes the POA sound harder than it is for most applications, and does not provide complete detail on POA policies and architecture, but it is close. Your alternative is to read the CORBA spec (a horrifying prospect for most people), or your ORB vendor's documentation (sometimes adequate, sometimes not).Flaws? Yes. Alternatives? No. If you are a CORBA programmer and you don't like reading the CORBA spec, BUY THIS BOOK.

Don't wish to wade through book after book? This book would be the one to buy! The concepts are clearly defined and the code examples are fairly easy to follow. (The thermostat example grows too complicated at the end of the book to even comprehend all pieces - authors could use other smaller constructs to show the concepts.)The authors are well-versed in the topic and it shows in every chapter. There is no hand-waving on topics, as I have seen in other treatments of this subject.I've been a Corba programmer for the last 3 years and this has been my bible...Can't wait to see a second edition of this book from the authors!

The book is composed from two books: CORBA reference and tutorial. You have two books in one what can be great, however, the book is definitely not easy to read. Reference and tutorial parts are not separated clearly in very helpful way but they are mixed together.After the first introductory part of the book, the authors focus our attention on developing quite comprehesive, CORBA based, distributed Climate Control System. To follow you must read "actively", ie. skip some materials or go back to recall something, depanding on your needs and skills. This may be not an easy task and can be a little bit frustrating. The book, after the first part, is not devided into levels of difficulty ( or everything is equally difficult? :).Shortly, if you need some CORBA challenge, this is good place to look for. The book is definitely worth reading, especially if you want to really feel and touch the CORBA technology.And one more thing. Good understanding of C++ is recommended...

This book is one of the best that I have ever read on CORBA. The authors have wasted no time in explaining OO concepts/C++ and have jumped straight on to the job. This is something that indicates erudition. This book is certainly intended for an expert C++ programmer. I believe this has been done mainly to focus on CORBA rather than C++. All programming examples are well thought out. This is "The Book on CORBA" as Doug Schmidt says in the foreword. Looking forward to the next edition that would cover DSI, DII etc (preferably from the same authors). The word "advanced" in the title is misleading.

This has to be one of the best CORBA books that I have read. It has helped me debug code and fix some really knotty problems. I found the exposition clear and easy to follow, and the index a useful tool. I don't think the authors intended it to be read cover-to-cover.If I am working on a CORBA project I alway like to have this book to hand.

This book has a clear presentation of many of the concepts in CORBA programming. Some of the clarity comes from limiting their discussion to the POA (Portable Object Adapter) approach to server programming. Not that I'm complaining.However, IMHO they have done a great disservice to readers by using a very unsafe C++ programming style. It is one thing to say that they, in the interest of pedagogy, don't show all the error-handling code. It is something completely different, and very unfortunate, that they go off to the other end and use a totally unsafe and buggy programming style -- using side-effects in `assert's. This will lead to surprising results, and hard to find bugs, when code is compiled in "Release" rather than "Debug" mode.
