4.5 stars. Smart, funny, charming and just plain fun. The banter between Jake and his BFF Don in the opening pages was irresistible; it drew me right in and set the tone for the loopy adventure that follows.Jake has been reading too much paranormal m/m romance. Then again, maybe not -- because his life is about to turn into something suspiciously akin to his taste in fiction. His easy rapport with animals seems to be developing into something deeper, and his dreams are overlapping disturbingly with waking reality. Oh, and there's a murder. And a hunky homicide detective investigating it -- one who's strangely tolerant of Jake's paranormal proclivities. And various cats, dogs, and squirrels, some of whom may or may not be more than they seem. Much fun ensues. It's a rare joy to find something lightweight and funny that's so well written. I was excited to see that it's the first in a series -- and then disappointed to learn that so far it's the ONLY one in the series. But Madeline Kirby is on my radar now and I'll be eagerly watching for more.
...is hard to do.In any event, I stumbled across this set of cozies just by chance and decided to give it a go.Hoooleee sheeeet, you guys. What an amazing books and set of characters. What I love most are the character voices. They come alive on the page. I can't say if the mystery is good because I suck at figuring them out. I read cozies for the characters and not the mystery itself. So I guess in that regard, it kept me guessing.Get this book for the characters and the writing, which is top notch.Diving into the second book now...
This is rather quirky, I admit. I didn't check out the blurb when I first started -- a practice I've done for the past several months to most of my current reads to keep myself surprised. Thus initially, I wonder which way the book is heading. Especially with Jake seemingly able to bond/connect/understand animals -- he is either a combination of Snow White or Dr. Doolittle *laugh*. Is this a contemporary with a touch of paranormal element? Or will this be a paranormal mystery? But after a while, I decided to just enjoy the flow. I liked Jake, I liked Jake's best friend Don, and I absolutely LOVED the cats!! It was written in a nice flow.
The book is fast paced and never bogs down in unnecessary detail, there isn't much action but the characters make the most of what there is. It's a sweet story with intriguing and well rounded characters that you feel a connection to. The interaction between Don & Jake is enjoyable and companionable, like sitting down with old friends and spending an afternoon catching up.The mystery isn't terribly twisty, the suspect list being fairly short, it's not hard to work out the killerbut it wasn't something I knew 15 pages in and just waited impatiently for everyone else to figure out either.
...because this book had me howling (with laughter.) It begins with a fun, quirky tone that carries throughout the book. I love Jake. And Don. And Boo. And Bill & Gary. I seriously want more Bill & Gary. I'd love a whole book devoted to their backstory & their current search for a nice young thing to play with. The story of Jake & Boo is fun, too. Jake's lack of a filter between brain & mouth resulting in his asking Petreski if he was a werewolf was hilarious. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Because one can never read too many paranormal romances. ;)
Jake is a good main character, sweet and eccentric. His friendship with Don is well written, and that's what pulled me in. The rest of the book was ok, the story was kind of rushed after the initial intro. And Don and Jake's involvement is a little far fetched. There isn't much to the romance piece, and no chemistry to speak of. The end reveal is rushed but also obvious. There were good parts to the book, they just weren't put together in the most captivating way.
I enjoyed this. Quirky. Warm. Funny. This is primarily a whodunnit. So if ypu're looking for M/M romance, think again. There is a M/M romamce but it is only a small part. The characters are pretty fully fleshed with peraonalities all their own. The dialogue flows naturally. And is laugh out loud funny at times. And yes, there is a shifter element here, but it is almost treated as an afterthought.
The description that it is not a 'werewolf' story is basically a lie since shifter is the same thing. I hate the damned things and am thoroughly annoyed that I was tricked into paying for this novel.
