I bought my first edition of this book back in the late 80s and even though I have taken good care of it, over the decades ... well, the past is gobbling up the future. For years the only source book of this nature was '777 and other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley' This is a great book to supplement 777 and I highly recommend it to anyone who studies the Literal and the Unwritten Qabalah. It is, simply put, a must have for any Esoteric Library. It functions much the same as Crowley's 777 so if you are familiar with that book you will have no problems with this one. The real difference between the two is Godwin's is a bit easier to read, as opposed to A. Crowley's writing style. I'm fine with Crowley's writings. Love them. But, this book is really easy to read and USE in your everyday studies of QBL! 93!

A good judge of the worth of a Reference book is how often you use it. I use this book almost every day -- usually more than once a day. It has most of the words one enounters as a Qabalist/Kabbalist, and some that one rarely sees. It has a more than adequate alphabetical list of Hebrew words and phrases with their corresponding Gematria. And, it has a list of numbers in the back with a healthy listing of words that correspond to those numbers.Oh, there are a couple of things I don't particularly like about it. It has too much emphasis on Crowely in it (even with Sepher Sephiroth in the very back). Crowely didn't know the Hebrew language well enough to make a significant contribution in this regard. Also, his own list of words (Sepher Sephiroth) shows a bias that one can only call, strange. Anyway, to each his own.There's also a single-minded preference for the Western Hermetic Tree as the only one viable, and any serious student of the Qabalah/Kabbalah knows that this is problemmatic at best.Still, even with these reservations, I heartily recommend this book for anyone who is a student of any Qabalistic Tradition. There's definitely enough 'meat' in here to make it worthwile.Peace Profound,Neshamah

This is truly an esoteric encyclopedia, not a lesson book on the Kabbalah. Complex and puzzling at times, but fascinating, nonetheless.

I love this book so very much! I have learned so much that I never even realized I was missing out on through the study and daily reading of this tome. It is always handy, so I can look up words/letters/numbers on the fly. I also enjoy looking up Angels, Goetic Demons, Qlippoth, Tunnels of Set and much more. It has added a great deal to my understanding of correspondences and Tarot. Plus it contains Sepher Sephirot from 777, to give further meaning to the numbers. All around a great book. Kudos to the author!I do have one quibble, the binding of the book is not the best quality and I predict I will have to replace this book in time. I would think it is the sheer size of the volume that contributes to this and I will gladly replace it if the time comes. It is a minor issue because the content is so worthwhile. Otherwise I like the paper and the layout and fonts are very well done. I will always have a copy, that is for sure. Highly recommended!

I like it but you have to remember this is more like a guide book. you have to have a basic understanding on the topic. It's very expensive but it is a really thick book which had breakdown from numbers for: Hebrew, English etc. For the reader who really wants to learn.

The latter contained the best explanation of the Higgs that I have read. This new book requires less of a technical background to understand. It is the easiest to read.“Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs” combines stars, galaxies, comets, meteors, particle interactions, and of course dinosaurs. What could be better? The book is well written and totally fascinating. We know of the existence of dark matter by its effects on ordinary matter, in particular, through the rotational speed of galaxies, and also by its role in the gravitational lensing of light. Dark matter permeates the universe. There is five times as much dark matter as there is ordinary matter. We also think that the dinosaurs died 66 million years ago when a large meteoroid, e.g., comet or asteroid, crashed into the Earth.Is there a connection between dark matter and the extinction of the dinosaurs? Did a dark matter disk lying in the plane of our galaxy nudge the meteoroid into a collision course with the Earth? As an atomic/nuclear physicist I am captivated by the idea that dark matter may form atom-like objects. Once you have self-interacting dark matter, everything else follows: the galactic disk, period passage of the solar system through the disk, the meteoroid nudge, and the tragic end of the dinosaurs. However, I think that we will have to learn more about dark matter. Satellite observations of the motion of stars may tell us about the disk of dark matter. More about the nature of dark matter may be revealed at the LHC or at the bottom of a gold mine in South Dakota, a land once ruled by dinosaurs.

This is another very interesting book by Lisa Randall, theoretical physicist at Harvard University. The book is divided into three main parts: The Development of the Universe, An Active Solar System, and Deciphering Dark Matters Identity.In the first part, we are introduced to this thing called dark energy – something that remains constant over time as the universe expands. That's why this type of energy can be called a cosmological constant. We can determine the existence of this stuff via gravitational lensing, the characteristics of the Bullet Cluster, supernovae measurements, and the study of the microwave background radiation.- all explained by Randall. This is important stuff, because dark matter makes up 69 percent of the energy in the universe. We are also given here a history lesson on the universe starting with the Big Bang, for which the author provides us with ample evidence of the event's occurrence. Later, we see the development of stars and galaxies, and how the competition of radiation and matter brought this about. Dark matter also played an important role here.In the second section, we get an introduction to meteors, asteroids, comets, and the planets. Associated with these objects are the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud. There is an excellent primer on how to determine the edge of the Solar System, and an introduction to near-Earth objects. The discussion continues into the five major extinctions that have occurred starting with the Ordovician-Silurian period about 440 million years ago. There were others before this, but these had a major impact on life on Earth. It is the last one, called the K-Pg extinction, that is responsible for the final blow to the dinosaurs, and the author elaborates on this in her book. Actually, it all began with Walter and Luis Alvarez back in 1980 when they discovered a layer of iridium dating back to about 65 million years ago. Over the years, other evidence solidified the findings, such as the discovery of other rare metals, rock droplets called microkrystites, tektites, and other evidence. Eventually the crater at Chicxulub was found clinching the case.By part three, we are now deciphering the mystery of dark matter. There are a number of possible paradigms for what dark matter is composed of. One prominent candidate are WIMPS. Some others are axions, neutrinos, machos, and asymmetrical dark matter models. Finding the right candidate is the difficult part since “today’s searches rely on a leap of faith that dark matter, despite its near invisibility, has interactions that are sufficiently substantial for detectors built from ordinary matter to register.” We have direct detection method, such as cryogenic detectors, and those that employ noble liquids. Then there are the indirect detections methods that involve looking for the signal that would arise if dark matter particles annihilate with dark matter antiparticles transforming the energy produced into something visible. The author discusses some discrepancies uncovered in the search for dark matter, such as the core-cusp problem, the missing satellite problem, and the too big to fail problem. Further chapters discuss an interesting hypothesis of the author called “double-disk dark matter,” (DDDM) and also something called “partially interacting dark matter,” where you have a small component of the dark matter that interacts through nongravitational forces.So how is all this related to the dinosaurs? Well, according to the DDDM theory, our galaxy would contain two types of disks, the dark matter disk and the visible matter disk. As the Solar System oscillated through the dark matter disk as we moved through the galaxy, gravitational forces could have slung “comets out of the Oort cloud so that they periodically catapulted into Earth, possible even precipitating a mass extinction.” The Oort cloud is a cloud of icy bodies found beyond Pluto. Who would have known?

Lisa Randall’s book is an interesting, entertaining and fun journey of a speculative new scientific idea from its first inception through the scientific process to the proposal of experimental tests. It was impressive to see the scientific rigor that is applied to investigate all possible implications and all conceivable alternative explanations. Yet the book is much more than that as it explains the current understanding how the universe evolved, galaxies and stars formed and how all of this is connected to (and by) dark matter and ultimately our life here on earth.To me this was not just a book about the idea how dark matter could have contributed to the demise of the Dinosaurs, it is a detective story and a view into a scientific mind working through all aspects a new scientific theory. And it was actually fun to read. Many analogies and funny anecdotes made it easier (at least for me) to understand the science and there are also tons of fun facts about science and our society in general.The book was highly praised by two reviewers of science magazine (The dark side of the universe, Jan Smit and Renske Smit, Science 23 October 2015: 390. [DOI:10.1126/science.aad2604]) and Lisa Randall points out clearly what are speculations, proven facts or established theories and makes this easily understandable for us non physicists.Yet here we are again: I see this in many science book reviews on Amazon. There is always the annoying “I give this zero stars” review without any meaningful explanation. Then there is the usual guy who has his own “theory” how the world works. Written by the leading interpreter of American Catholicism, Contending with Modernity is the first history of American Catholic higher education to examine both intellectual and institutional dimensions of the subject. Taking a narrative approach, Philip Gleason begins his account with an overview of old-style Catholic colleges in the 1800s and the internal conflicts that influenced the founding of The Catholic University of America, the first modern Catholic university. From there, Gleason depicts Catholic educators around 1900 as they began to accept modernization in the organizational sphere but rejected it in the realm of ideas and beliefs. Convinced of the truth of their religious and intellectual position, the restructured Catholic colleges grew rapidly after World War I and moved into the postwar era with enhanced self-confidence. Gleason examines trends such as "Catholic Action" and argues that the economic collapse at home during the 1930s and rise of totalitarianism in Europe furthered the critique of secularism and led to a firm Catholic commitment to educate for a "Catholic Renaissance". In the 1960s, changes in church teaching as a result of the Vatican II Council and cultural upheavals in American society reinforced the internal transformation already under way. Contending With Modernity by Philip Gleason, of Notre Dame University. Book is subtitled, "Catholic Higher Education in the Twentieth Century." At the outset, Professor Gleason notes that the historiography of Catholic Higher Education is severely limited. I bought Prof. Gleason's book (from Amazon.com, by the way) since there were so very few books dealing with the history of Catholic colleges and universities in the United States. And I needed references for my MA thesis on Catholic colleges. By writing a history of Catholic higher education, from 1900 to 1995, Dr. Gleason has expanded the field. In covering this time period, the author has chosen to emphasize the struggles of Catholic colleges and universities to deal with modern ideas. These struggles were exacerbated by the suspicion within the Catholic Church raised by "Americanism" a name given to the modern forces which presented grave dangers to the Faith and identified, rightly or wrongly, with the American church. Gleason spends the first part of his book showing how that mis-identification affected American Catholic schools up until about the end of World War II; he then brings in various other historical events and figures, including the work of Dorothy Day, Fr. Curran at The Catholic University of America and, towards the end of the book, the charge of anti-intellectualism lodged by Msgr. John Tracy Ellis. Philip Gleason, however, does not raise the counter-charge by Rev. Andrew M. Greeley, the noted fiction writer and sociologist, who has found Catholic schools be just about as intellectual or anti-intellectual as other colleges and universities in the United States. In the last few pages, Prof. Gleason missed a grand opportunity to explore in greater detail the potential impact of "Ex Corde Ecclesiae", the August 1990 Constitutional Document of Pope John Paul II, on modern Catholic higher education. Some features of this document, such as the requirement for an Oath of Fidelity, have been fought on the grounds of academic freedom and autonomy for the Catholic colleges and universities (particularly by some in the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, ACCU). The author has documented his citations with about 92 pages of notes and references, making this volume a great step forward in filling the gap in the historiography of Catholic Higher Education. There are many nuggets to be mined, as, for example, if your interests is the "Great Books" approach to higher education, Dr. Gleason's book leads you to references for the attempted "Great Books" program at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California. The book is worth the price for wonderful tidbits such as that.

The writing is simple and plain spoken but the subject matter eye opening. The author can be a bit redundant about his size and weight and sunrise stories yet that still didn't temper the fascination I felt reading of his exploits as a game warden. He was definitely passionate and committed to his 'purpose', as well as just plain gutsy in some of his means and methods. The Kindle edition I read was of poor quality. I have read stories of the poor editing done with Kindle editions and being new to this format haven't had the experience of some readers but I see what they mean after this book. I got accustomed to it but found it surprising, like others have, that more care isn't taken in the conversion process. With that said however, the story stands entirely on its own as a good read and I would recommend it.

I love the outdoors, so I was fascinated by Terry's descriptions of life as a game warden in northern California. He describes the scenery vividly but without going over the top, and paints hilarious pictures of the criminals he catches, whether they're crazy, hardened, or ordinary people making a simple mistake. The stories show something really interesting, namely Terry's growth as a person and as a professional during his decades of service. We can see his attitudes and actions change as the events unfold, making him a dynamic character in his own autobiography. That, in my opinion, is what sets the book head and shoulders above all the other "interesting people doing interesting things" books that show up on Amazon. Read it if you love the outdoors, law enforcement, true-crime stories, or adventure.

This is an interesting read. It was eye-openning for me. I didn't realize the number of poachers out there. I guess I've always chosen to follow the rules and hunt and fish with only those who believe in doing the same. I was raised to respect wildlife and the outdoors and thought all, or at least most sportsmen were. Given this book won a National Outdoor Book Award, I thought the writing would be better. I rated it four stars and not five because the writing is somewhat elementary and at times repetitious. Mr. Grosz's "size" and "eyes" are sometimes too close together. If you can get past that, it's an interesting read.

I've been reading this mostly when I travel because each chapter is a well contained story of its own, perfect for small bites.The story telling is great. You really get drawn into the situations Terry got into and the book sort of feels like the guy is sitting in front of you around a table telling you his wild tales life brought his way. It's incredibly expressive and personal.This book also gave me great insight into poachers and their impact on wildlife. I've always hung out with people who get properly licensed and follow the rules, so this was very enlightening. I'm sad that these stories exist to be told but hope that my own wildlife rich state has dedicated champions such as Terry protecting our wildlife.

I very seldom write a four or five star review for any book, but this one is definitely worth reading or listening to in audio. Absolutely held my interest. I was lucky enough to get the book when it was free and then noticed that I could buy the audio version for $1.99. The narration is superb. Just wish there were more titles of this author out in audiobook format. Hopefully Amazon and Audible are listening.

I plan on becoming a California Fish and Game Warrden myself. This book in my opinion gives great stories of how he went through his years of a California Fish and Game Warrden. Really recommend this book to the people who want to learn more of what Fish and Game Warrden go through on a daily task or to a person like myself who would like to become a Fish and Game Warrden and to know what to expect out in the field.

Excellent stories from a legendary conservation officer during the early years of his career, when he was a State Game Warden. Some of these stories were re-created in a series "The Wildlife Wars", which has been shown on the Animal Planet. You won't want to miss the chapter about "The one that didn't get away". Reading this book was even better for me because I briefly worked with Mr. Grosz near the end of his career.

It was just an ok read for me. What you would expect from a warden doing his job. He mentions how big he is quite a lot and that was disappointing to me. Once or maybe twice was enough.

My 2-star review is only concerning the dryness of the content. This book was required for a class, and after attempting to read about three pages, it lost me immediately. I'm an avid reader, so, frankly...I'm not hard to please (unless it's horrible writing). But this was simply too dry and boring for me. This is also coming from someone who typically 'likes' reading textbooks (just ask my friends). I realize this book has lots of relevant and necessary content, but I could not get through more than three pages. And when I got to class, every single one of my classmates (MSW program) said the same thing. Boring, and way too confusing. The book arrived in excellent condition, and the process to rent it was wonderful. Just...zzzzzz (definitely recommend if you need something to help you fall asleep with!).

For the price, this book was not very effective or thorough. I had to buy this book for a second year graduate research class and I found it to be too simple. There was very little explanation and I did not feel as though I received a proper introduction to program evaluation from this book alone. It was useful for brief tune-ups throughout the semester but I would not recommend this book as a stand-alone tool for future graduate professors to use for classes. I believe this book would have better suited an undergraduate class.On a more positive note, it is very simple to read and incorporates a fair amount of methodological approaches to program evaluation. I rated it 3 stars because it did not live up to the hype and it was too simplistic for anyone to actually finish reading it know how to completely evaluate a program efficiently. It was also ineffective for my research proposal for the class as I used an appreciative inquiry framework for my methodology and the book did not incorporate appreciative inquiry at all, even though it has been gaining popularity within the past 20 years. Overall, not very helpful and felt like they sacrificed quality for quantity (it is a very short textbook).

I thought the book was really helpful with their step by step process in conducting tests on SPSS. Definitely a lot better than many other stats texts I have read.

Our professor choose this book for education. I would only recommend it for the medical field.

Very poor quality with small print on the Fire device. It will not work on the Kindle Cloud Reader. Do not waste your money, get the book in print or on the Google book app.
