Review
“An astonishing book in its depth and breadth. This is a treasure of Buddhism.” (Joan Halifax, author of Being with Dying)“Muso Soseki was a towering figure in the early history of Japanese Zen. The luminous gardens he designed remain on view in Kyoto, and now we have this excellent record of Muso's major writing. Tom Kirchner presents this text skillfully, with useful annotation and introduction, matching his exemplary volumes Tangling Vines and Record of Linji. Muso's teachings are valuable as an historical document, framed as dialogues with the shogun, and providing deep insights into traditional Buddhist and Zen lore. His teachings also offer gems of helpful spiritual support still relevant today. Muso warns of many available sidetracks and obstacles to clear awareness, how even ‘wisdom can lead to confusion.’ He clarifies the need to study the intent rather than the words, but how also studying words is necessary for beneficial guidance. These words from Muso Soseki still have power to shepherd contemporary students of the Way.” (Taigen Dan Leighton, author of Zen Questions)

About the Author
Muso Soseki (1275–1351) was a Rinzai Zen Buddhist monk and teacher, and a calligraphist, poet and garden designer. The most famous monk of his time, he is also known as Muso Kokushi ("national Zen teacher"), a honorific conferred to him by Emperor Go-Daigo. Thomas Yuho Kirchner was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1949. He went to Japan in 1969 to attend Waseda University in Tokyo for a year, after which he remained in Japan to study Buddhism. He spent three years training under Yamada Mumon as a lay monk at Shofuku-ji before receiving ordination in 1974. Following ordination he practiced under Minato Sodo Roshi at Kencho-ji in Kamakura and Kennin-ji in Kyoto. Following graduate studies in Buddhism at Otani University he worked at the Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture in Nagoya and subsequently at the Hanazono University International Research Institute for Zen Buddhism. He presently lives at Tenryu-ji in Arashiyama, Kyoto. Among his publications are the Record of Linji, Dialogues in a Dream, and Entangling Vines.

For anyone who loves Zen, but want a clear, concise, set of teachings, this book is it.One of the most useful, and direct group of Teachings available. Not abstract, nor Koan filled set of statements. The Teaching comes alive. There really isn't anything that is abstruse or mysticalabout these teachings.Very concrete instructions that you would get from any truly enlightenedMaster, first hand IMHO.A very Cool and pragmatic array of Zen points.
Interesting book which cured my somnambulism...
This is not an interesting book. It is not like the type of Zen practiced by the Soto or Rinzai schools. It talks about prayers, demonic spirits, and is quite influenced by Confucianism. It is 14th century Pure Land Zen light, and has little in common with the type of Zen that has spread outside of Japan.
This is a very important translation of a spiritual masterpiece. The Ven. Muso Soseki's teachings in "Dialogues In A Dream" are pure gold.
A good book if you can read with your heart.
If you are looking for answers to the basic things of life and death, enlightenment along with Zen understanding, this book is a gem. Master Muso Soseki had a deep knowledge of all the concepts related to Buddhism and he was a high qualified Zen Master. Muso Soseki is credited for his poineering wonderful work on Zen Gardens, a concept that has become so famous in West now.The Book is divided in two parts, first part gives a detailed glimpse of his life and important developments and the second part which is almost 70% of the book talks about the Zen, Buddhist wisdom in a question answer form. Master answers the question that always arise in our limited human minds as we see suffering, disparity, difficulties all around us as we lead our lives, the questions are perfect reflection of a confused human mind while the answers seem like that of awakened master. If the question of Karma bothers you and you believe that we are karmic beings bound by karma from the past irrespective of your religion in which you were born , then this book is for youIf the question of disparity like some are rich and poor bothers you and you are seeking answers from karmic point of view this is the book for youIf you are confused with Zen practice and recent bifurcation of basic wisdom from it and want true answers this book if for you.A highly underrated and neglected spiritual work that should be ragarded as best in this area. Thanks to the translator Mr Thomas whose painstaking effort has brought me closer to this fantastic wisdom of Master Muso.
Although the Zen master Muso Soseki (1275-1351) is a major figure in Japanese Buddhism, his work is still relatively unknown in the west, owing to a lack of good translations. What a valuable gift, then, to have Muso's masterpiece "Muchu mondo" (1344) available in an excellent and eminently readable English translation by Thomas Kirchner. There are several partial translations extant in English, but this is the first version of the entire text. It's preceded by an informative introduction by the translator, and supplemented by helpful notes and an index. The first part of "Dialogues in a Dream" deals with problems that arise from everyday life as well as religious practice, and discusses topics such as avarice and wealth, the nature of compassion, and the functions of prayer and ritual. Some of the themes treated in the second part are more abstract -- the distinctions among knowledge, wisdom and enlightenment, for example -- but there are also practical discussions of mediation and other aspects of Zen practice. Muso was Japan's greatest maker of landscape gardens, and so it's especially fascinating to read his remarks about love of Zen gardens on the part of "followers of the Way." The third part of the text deals with such topics as the Ground of Original Nature and various uses of language in Zen as a "separate transmission outside the teachings."Muso was a multifaceted genius -- a deeply philosophical thinker as well as a creative artist and an inspiring teacher -- and this all comes through powerfully in this fine translation, which will appeal as much to readers interested in Zen thought as to those engaged in Buddhist practice. The book is beautifully produced, and should establish itself before long as a classic of the Zen canon in western languages.
