This book feels very much like a rapidly done, cobbled together retelling of work done by other people. It is disappointing given this author's other work and especially because of a number of factual and careless mistakes. For example, he refers to General Marshall as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, when in fact, Admiral Leahy was Chairman. He also says MacArthur authorized the assassination of Admiral Yamamoto when it was Admiral Nimitz who made the decision after being cleared by the Secretary of the Navy. Despite the Army Air Corps being renamed the Army Air Force in 1942, the author uses the former name throughout the timeline of the narrative. On a lesser scale, he cites General Patton watching the North Africa landings from the "cruiser" Monrovia when, in reality, the Monrovia was a transport. There are others but the few cited above are representative. One also gets the feeling that he accepts MacArthur's constant plaint that the Central Pacific offensive under Admiral Nimitz was poor strategy. That's a simplistic argument and the proof lies in the fact that, throughout the Central Pacific, Japanese defenses were breached and their military and naval strength catastrophically affected. Taken together, the things listed above make it difficult to accept this author's authority as a writer of history.
This history is the interleaved biographies of three of the most outstanding American generals who lead American troops in World War II. They are not the foremost of that war, because the narrative leaves out Eisenhower, Hap Arnold, and Bradley. The justification for picking these three over the others is that Patton and MacArthur were the most newsworthy, and both of their careers were intertwined with that of George Marshall, who simply does not get enough attention paid to his role in winning WW II. The three were roughly contemporaries, and all three had important roles in WW I.I confess this is a very easy read. I finished the lion's share of it in three nights of about 3 hours each night. So why do I give it only three stars. If I could, I would give it three and a half, but I am constrained to give a clear indication of what reservations I had about the book. At the top of the list is the fact that there are numerous biographies and autobiographies on each of the three individually I count ten for Patton and at least seven for MacArthur and Marshall. Groom quotes liberally from the most authoritative of these.But, because of the length of this book and its scope (a biography of Marshall covers four volumes, each longer than this book.) the level of detail, even of some of the most interesting events of WW II, is thin, and I keep wanting more. One may be especially robbed by the fact that the author seems to concentrate his material on Patton to be taken from some of the most dramatic scenes in the famous film based on Ladislas Farago's biography of Patton's role in WW II. Therefore, I was far more interested in the sections on MacArthur and Marshall, and of those, I think Marshall gets the short end of the stick. The one aspect in Patton's life which I found interesting is the way in which he died. I knew he died in an automobile accident, but I did not know the details. On the other hand, the author neglects to indicate when Patton got his fourth star. (This may not be unusual, as I had a hard time locating that fact on the Internet. I believe it was when he was "kicked upstairs" to command the 15th Army and replace Eisenhower as commander of US forces in Europe.The book covers very little of their lives after WW II. It even neglects to cover the disagreements MacArthur had with President Truman, leading to Truman's firing him from the command of forces in Korea.The book has an ample selection of end notes, but mostly to secondary sources rather than primary sources about the men, although there is a fair number of references to Patton's diary and to poems he wrote during WW II. There is a sprinkling of inaccuracies which gave me the sense that the author is not a professional historian of military matters. One I remember is his erroneous reference to a Tiger IV tank in North Africa. That small reference had two errors. There were no Tiger tanks in the Afrika Corp, and the Tiger was identified as VI, not IV, or as Tiger I and Tiger II.In spite of these caveats, I recommend the book to anyone for whom military history is not a major passion. For dedicated gorgnards, go to the biographies of the individuals.
Several books have been written commemorating and retelling of the significance of the greatest leaders that have lived and experienced the most pinnacle moments in history. A few titles bear the same titles but the contents within the book are quite different. Such is the case with Winston Groom’s recent biography of the three most notable generals of the United States Army, which Grooms writes of the first and foremost trait that each men possessed, they earned their schooling and training at the military academy at West Point and Virginia Military Institute and second, each fought in the First World War within the same campaigns but separate and respective commands, George S. Patton, Douglas MacArthur, and George Marshall and by the Second World War one would earn the distinction of four star general and two five star generals of the Army. This is their story and their life as they undoubtedly interconnected.The Generals pivots the roles of Patton, MacArthur, and Marshall to a level of understanding that is in need of acknowledgment more than 70 years after they achieved monumental victory within two fronts of World War II. The book does not focus on new findings that have been uncovered in presidential or archival libraries, but specifically tells the story to readers of three men that have been compared to the most historic figures in history, especially ancient history; Groom begins and sets the historic backdrop to ancient times and Alexander the Great as the epitome of leadership and the warrior spirit that contributed to his most notable role as a general. And what has that have to do with the generals depicted in the book? Each men that Groom writes of shared similar aspirations as young men before they set foot within the halls, rooms, and fields in which they, too, would lead armies of men within rugged terrain that would promote them to higher heights and more natural terrain where they would have to fight with their most bitter enemy to the end. Dramatic as it may it may seem, one does not have to go into too much detail with these generals. But for further insight, for readers that may not have delved within the individual biographies of Patton, MacArthur, or Marshall, the interconnectedness that they have in common shows in the chapter “Courage was the Ruleâ€, imagine WWI and the Battle at Meuse-Argonne and the offensive that took place between September 26 to November 11, 1918, quite interesting. And besides that historic event, one must also backtrack to the lives of each men and other commonalities, they were one of the last of the fighting soldiers that grew up in a day and age that had long passed by the time WWII commenced but continued to carry on as strong-willed soldiers that had fathers or relatives of the US Civil War or grew up within the frontier.After reading The Generals, readers may see another perspective of how war was fought and the men that were responsible for leading their men and the world towards peace in spite of the costs that they will have lived to retell. And Winston Groom writes his narrative to continue to tell their stories. It is an enjoyable book for the curious history aficionado that provides a condense biography of each men but with concise detail.
