I happened upon this book by accident. I'd downloaded a sample of Next of Kin and enjoyed it but had no intention of buying it because I did not want to spend that money at the time. When searching out more on that book, this one was referenced. I initially thought that there was no need to check it out since N.O.K. gave all the results. Still, I downloaded the sample out of curiosity and cussed because it was so darned good that I knew I had to read more. I would have cheated myself of a fantastic story had I gone by my first assumption and just bought N.O.K. I loved getting to know these deliciously complex characters, and appreciate the research or expertise that went into making what the characters experienced be so authentic. I did not want the book to end, even though I was anxious to know how it was going to progress. I read it all day long until by eyes burned, and only then did I put it aside in order to force myself to sleep. I fell in love with Dawn, to be frank, and her characterization has left me wanting a Dawn of my own...lol.The story is intense, which I appreciate since many of the lesbian novels or short stories I've read are so fickle and leave me wanting as a discerning reader. I have to admit, though, there were times that the two main characters seemed to be more friends or have a sibling-like connection than be romantic interests for each other. This meant that when the author actually put them in romantic situations it seemed misplaced; almost incestuous. This is peculiar since at other times, when there was no intention to have them be romantic or intimate, it's exactly how it felt. The attraction between them was undeniable. I loved the way the author respectfully treated this most delicate topic, and showcased the patience, trust, and tender nurturing survivors of this crime...from both characters experiences, require. I also appreciate that the author did not feel the need to bombard the reader with sexual situations which, in my opinion, would have taken away from the potent story she was trying to tell. Instead she showed that intimacy and sensuality does not always equate to sex. While there were a few holes in the story, and it did seem to drag on unnecessarily at times, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. I am extremely glad I opted to purchase it, and am cussing once more because now I know that I must also have Next of Kin. I look forward to being reacquainted with Dawn and Aiden to see how each has adapted to dealing with their respective demons while still trying to maintain a relationship. As well to get to know Kade and her story a bit more; to know what haunts her. Del is uninteresting and a bit flat to me...at least in this book, will see how she develops in N.O.K.
it's about rape. a main character is rape. i HATE writers using such a heinous crime as a plot device, and that doesn't change with this.so, be warned; it's very specifically about rape, the side effects on a woman's life, court, etc. it's not a pleasant book to read and i can't imagine why she did this.maybe a lot of her readers have been raped, or otherwise assaulted, and she wanted to send a message, but it's NOT. LIGHT. READING.also, there should be a rape crisis counselor, but i guess that doesn't fit the plot, either. or the dna evidence, too. but you know, plot point.
I really enjoy books where the relationship builds up, rather than the ones where the two lovers fall instantly in love. The build up is the pay off for me. I like to see why they fall in love and feel cheated when the falling in love is passed completely over.Jae is such a great writer. Many writers are stronger at plot or characters, but Jae is good at both. I also like it that although her characters may have troubles and challenges, she is kind to her characters. If Jae writes it, I'll read it.
I'm a big fan of Jae's work and while not my favorite story written by her this is a very good book and consistent with the quality storytelling and wonderful characters I've come to expect from this author. That being said the second half of the book does go on a little longer than seems necessary but even so it's not so much longer to detract from enjoying the book. On a side note a few of the other reviews which appear to be written about the first edition mention bisexuality of Aiden, in this edition Aiden is identified as gay not bisexual.
Whatever the genre, all Jae's books have one thing in common - the characterisation is excellent! You'll care about the people in this book. You'll believe in their emotions and reactions to events and will get to know them as they get to know each other. The storyline is convincing and makes for a really enjoyable read. Once again, thanks Jae for great entertainment and characters I'll think about long after the book is over.
This is the story of a psychologist who works with rape victims who is raped herself and the female detective who comes to her aid and helps her through her nightmares and stars to fall in love with her. That is the conflict of interest in this book.I thought that the book was very well written was suspenseful especially from the time an arrest is made and the e n d of the trial. There are very touching moments in the book and very funny ones as wellHighly recommendedEnjoy
When I first seen the price for this book, I was thinking, "there's no book that well written!" Then I read Conflict of Interest by Jae and instantly changed my mind. The relationship of Aiden and Dawn in this book comes around in the most interesting way. Not wanting to give away the plot, I will just say that you need to pick it up and read it for yourself. Both characters have had their fair share of problems before, but together they find trust and belief not only together, but in themselves. I also liked the character of Kade Matheson, who in the sequel has some important decisions of her own to make and is a strong person in her own right. "Conflict of Interest" was the prequel book to "Next of Kin" and I highly recommend both of them.
