Amazon, you cannot lump all translations of this poem together as just different forms of the same book! The different translations are, you know, different. I really like the Harrison translation from 1970. The free translation on Kindle from 1914 is not as readable. People come to these reviews to see what people say about the different editions and translations, and the way Amazon jumbles them all together is frustrating.
Although best known for her Lord Peter Wimsey novels, Dorothy L. Sayers translation, along with her erudite notes and analysis of this minor incident at the end of Charlemagne's reign, lifts this poem to the lofty status of Epic that it so well deserves. The poem is the best example of the age of chivalry that we have, and Sayers could easily have been awarded a Doctorate for this fine effort---a must read for any student of literature of any era.
Every country has a time for epic writings, with heroes, fair ladies, traitors and great deeds. The British one is King Arthur, the French one: the song of Roland, but there is also an Irish one, a German one, a Portuguese one, an Indian one, a Viking one...... and the first one of all: the Greek Iliad.I am very fond of Roland because it is so vivid, and each person described has a standard role: the King is noble, the traitor is horrible, the fiancée is going to die from despair - on the spot.I am sorry this has become "literature for the happy few" instead of being given to teenagers together with Tarzan and Batman. Here you find strength and poetry and charm; texts like this should enchant all the kids you know. Now the truth is I did not buy this for Roland, that I have known and enjoyed in French for fifty some years. I bought it for Dorothy Sayers. She was an extremely well-educated woman from Oxford University. She got a degree in 1920 (before then, women could not earn a degree. She is the author of mystery books, notably the Peter Wimsey series, that I liked very much because it is the first time I have seen in literature a good description of PTSD after world war one. I like her translation of Roland: she understood the characters and their feelings quite well.
I first bought a pretty hardcover edition of this printed by Heritage Press. It truly is beautiful; however, when I started reading it -- and it's a verse translation -- I was horribly disappointed. It just wasn't very good.So I decided to go for a prose translation, and I've read good things about Merwin's. The Modern Library paperback seems sturdy, with pages a little crisper than a Penguin. It's not necessarily a trade paperback, but it's just a pretty sturdy normal paperback, again, a cut above a Penguin. As far as the contents, this is rather primitive stuff. I'd compare it to a second rate Iliad; maybe a third rate Iliad. Much of it is "catalog of ships"-like. Lots of names of warriors, nations, huge numbers of troops (hundreds of thousands, tens of thousands) etc. There are moments of description of the setting, which might perhaps be later additions, as I understand this was performed orally, like a play. But overwhelmingly there are minimal environmental descriptions, which makes for disappointing reading, almost on the level of a young adult novel.Spoilers now.It seems to be a stretch of my understanding of the hero to look positively upon Roland. I've read WWII battles where the decisions made by Roland would be universally slammed by all historians. He sacrificed, apparently, 20,000 soldiers just because he didn't want to call for help out of some sense of honor. Yeah, death and the slaughter of 20,000 is sure a "victory." The introduction in this case helps elucidate the fact that this epic was probably written to turn a defeat into a victory. That's painfully evident. I'm sure the real Roland, if he was a real person, probably did fight a rear-guard action and lost miserably, yet he was liked, so a legend sprung up around him to convert his humiliating disaster into something passable.I find Oliver a more honorable person, who wisely counseled blowing the horn rather than recklessly being brutally slaughtered.I'm disappointed with my first experience reading the Chansons de geste, even while loving Matter of Britain kind of stuff (Chretien de Troyes, etc).
My favorite author James Lee Burke often alludes to this work so I decided that I must read it. Hard read indeed. Canterbury tales and Beowulf were much easier reads but this is an important work. I almost felt like I was back in school and forced to read it.
I generally struggle with lengthy poems. I usually need study aids for works like The Divine Comedy or Paradise Lost. However this is not the case with The Song of Roland. We'll sort of... I was able to download a free reading of the work from Librivox. It was read by a female. She was truly excellent. She read the poem with a rhythm that really worked for me. I actually found this work to be quite enjoyable. Of all of the ancient epic poems, this is probably my favorite.
This is a great French epic poem of the Middle Ages. If one enjoys suspense, intense drama, riveting action, chivalry, battles, and honor, then one would most surely enjoy this well written and famous epic of Western Canon. One could easily understand how this song was sung and told from generation to generation by Europeans. As usual, Sayers writes good background info about the epic.
There are many translations of the Song of Roland. This is easily the best. Translated poetry to prose, but very lyrical, beautiful writing. Was my all time favorite book for about 15 years during high school, college, and after.
