This slim volume is based on a course of lectures given by Fermi at Columbia University, New York, in the summer of 1936. The intended audience for this book is clearly the science undergraduate, but given the age of this text, one wonders whether it is more of historical interest than a course book for the modern student.Fermi's treatment of the fundamentals in the first four chapters - thermodynamic systems, the first law, the second law, and entropy - is attractive in its clarity. He takes his time, and is careful not to lose the reader as he elaborates the concepts. Given the timeless nature of these topics, this part of the book does not suffer on account of its age.Regarding the subjects presented in the next three chapters - thermodynamic potentials, gaseous reactions and the thermodynamics of dilute solutions - my view is that today's student would be better advised to study a more contemporary text. Important equations, such as the Gibbs-Helmoltz equations, are not mentioned here, and some of the nomenclature and symbols are outdated, which is unlikely to help the student when cross-referencing to contemporary texts and class notes.The final chapter is devoted to the third law and the entropy constant.It is evident from the book that Fermi has a liking for theorems and proofs. The Clapeyron equation, for example, is proved in two different ways for no apparent reason other than to show that it can be done, and his derivation of the phase rule extends over six pages. If you're a fan of such rigor, there is much for you to enjoy here.Overall, I would say that Fermi's book has probably passed its time as a course text for the modern student of thermodynamics, but that for the purposes of deepening understanding of the fundamental concepts addressed in the first four chapters, it still has much to recommend it.

I took a thermodynamics course a few years ago and am reading this book now to brush up on the subject. I am currently half way through the book. This text is succinct with few examples which I personally enjoy since I can read the entire book fairly quickly. It is well written and hits all the major concepts. Fermi does a nice job of giving interpretations to formulas where appropriate and provides proofs and derivations. This is exactly what I was looking for. The text is excellent as a brush-up text. However, if you are looking for an introductory text, you would be better off buying a larger text which includes more discussion and provides more examples. Also, this particular book has many minor typos. It is never a problem to catch them almost immediately but it is a bit distracting.

I bought this to replace the one that I had in 1973. Dense, clear writing; My children and I wore out the old one in three physics majors.

First published in 1937, this book is a masterful treatment by a master physicist. Weighing in at just over 150 pages, it manages to cover all the really essential topics in this subject. Furthermore there are a few excellent examples that nicely illustrate the power of thermodynamic methods. The treatment and use of free energy are notable high points in this work.Sadly, this book is probably still not appropriate for readers who have no knowledge of thermodynamics or the physics of heat more generally, but it would make an ideal second book on the subject. I bought this book about two years ago and read through the first two chapters and completed the practice problems. Since then I have gone back to school for a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and am taking an Advanced Thermodynamics course. I pretty-much don't need anything else but this 150 pg. book. It is very clear, to the point, great derivations, and is making my life extremely easy. Get this, it costs only $10 and worth much more.

Kindle on my iphone and on my PC both can only display the equations in very, very small print. That makes a physical science book like this one useless. I'm actually going to try to return this and one other Dover book for Kindle for the same reason!

Set around the time of American entry into World War I, Julia is a recent high school graduate living in Philadelphia. For several Christmases in a row, she has been accumulating gifts for her future beloved: hand-knit wool socks, a nice journal / notebook, a Miraculous Medal (because she's sure he'll be Catholic), and an engraved pocket watch.Julia and her best friend decide, almost on impulse, to volunteer as medical assistants with the Red Cross. Soon thereafter, they are crossing the Atlantic on a ship with many other young women, destined to serve at a field hospital in France.As you'd expect, Julia does meet her beloved (Major Peter Winslow, an officer in the Canadian army) soon after arriving. What I was not expecting, however, is the way Julia's gifts ultimately make their way to that beloved. I enjoyed the plot twists which deliver each gift to Major Winslow, sometimes without Julia even intending to give him a particular gift.Due to the circumstances of the war, Julia and Major Winslow must spend significant time apart. He is on the battlefield; she is at the field hospital. Although they do spend some time together in face to face conversation, much of their romance ends up unfolding through letters. The hero and heroine thus grow together through a wholesome connection of minds and hearts, saving the connection of bodies for a day when they are able to make a lifetime commitment to each other.I also appreciated the way the story's faith component was woven naturally into the story. Major Winslow is a lapsed Catholic whose faith has gone dormant. His brother, who is also deployed in Europe, is much more devout. Over the course of the story, events play out in a way that leads Major Winslow's faith to reawaken spontaneously --- and all of this serves to further deepen his connection with Julia.The cover describes this as "Book 1" of a series. I'm not sure how many more there will be, or when they'll be published, but I'm looking forward to reading them when they are.

Here's another great book to add to your inter-generational book club! I'm reviewing Ellen Gable's Julia's Gifts on behalf of myself and my YA-reader-daughter.I bought this for my daughter for Christmas and she devoured it within a couple weeks, so I got my hands on it and finished in a couple days. We both hated for it to end! I chose this because we both love historical fiction and wanted to read more about WWI (The Great War.)Julia Murphy is a smart, strong, sweet, dreamer of a girl who has conjured up in her mind exactly what her future husband must be like, right down to the color and texture of his hair. She even began purchasing Christmas gifts for him (her "beloved") since she was 17! So far she has stored away a Miraculous Medal, 2 pairs of socks, and a leather pocket journal embossed with a maple leaf on the cover. The story opens at Christmastime 1917, and she has saved up to add a silver pocket watch to her collection of gifts for her future hubby.She turns 21 in 1918 and feels called to represent her family in joining the war effort since her father is too old and her younger brothers too young to enlist. Julia transitions from a fairly sheltered oldest daughter, coming of age in Philadelphia, never having been farther from home than the Jersey Shore, to a world-traveler. As a mother, this part of the story was especially moving to me. I was delighted that Julia met some kind and lovely friends along the way. (And we get a really cool piece of news at the end: some of those friends are going to be main characters in future "Great War, Great Love" books by Ellen Gable!) The importance of friendships, selflessness, and a heart open to God's will--there are so many beautiful lessons that this story subtly imparts upon YA readers.As far as maturity level, be aware that there is a little bit of (necessary) violence and gore, appropriately so since this is a book set in a time of war. My daughter is especially sensitive to anything bloody, but she had no problem at all reading Julia's Gifts. There are appropriate and tastefully-depicted scenes about leg amputations, pus-filled wounds, mustard gas skin blisters, and even outbreaks of a stomach-flu. It is shocking what little training these Red Cross volunteers received before their "baptism by fire." The romantic scenes do not go beyond very chaste embraces and one or two "kisses on the lips," so it is appropriate for almost any age in that regard.HUGE SPOILER:My daughter's favorite part was when Major Winslow wrote that he needed a time piece. Ok, I admit, I didn't immediately realize "Julia's Gifts" were the yearly Christmas purchases she was storing away, lol! I had assumed the title referred to the main character's many virtues and selflessness in caring for injured soldiers. So there is a cute twist regarding the gifts, developed throughout the story, that YA readers will delight in realizing.Do not hesitate to purchase Ellen Gable's Julia's Gifts for, I'd say an advanced 12-year-old reader and up, or yourself! It is such a sweet historical romance with lots of important life lessons cleverly woven throughout its pages.

If you like a good wholesome love story this is for you. So sweet and endearing. Enough description of war to respect the trauma they witnessed while watching a sweet innocent love blossom.

Enjoyable and sweet read. I read 3/4 of the book in one sitting; the book really kept my attention. Excellent job on details--the author has clearly done her research on the war effort. Although targeted for a younger audience, I think the book also appeals to an adult Christian audience.

This story is great! A romantic historical fiction tale about love, war, faith, hope. Non-violent, though you definitely experience what it must have been like to be a young volunteer nurse during WW1. Read it!

This was a simple easy read book that I sat and read in one sitting. A nice , clean simple romantic war story. Nice.

We have several from this series. They are beautiful -- photos and text lay-out -- and in very high-quality paper. This would make a lovely gift, or a hand-me-down sort of book for the home (I'm inclined to keep ours for my kids' kids).

About the Author

Rollo May (1909-1994) taught at Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, and was Regents' Professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The most thought provoking book I have read this year. The author explains so clearly the connection between legend and myth, and the patterns and path of the lives of friends and family, the people I care about. The book links a wellspring of ancient wisdom to the present.

Myths are stories which present images and ideas that help us to understand and make meaning of our lives. Rollo May does an excellent job of describing how myth functions in our society, providing several well thought out and clearly presented illustrations. Reading this book gave me a perspective which I had not possessed previously.

Great book to help understand the driving forces that motivate us and why we do what we do. It provides some insight as to why our society has sustained the moral decline we have observed in recent years and what we as an individual can do to avoid that trap as society, like the lemmings, move rapidly and mindlessly toward the cliff. .

I had thought that this book would be nothing more than some guy doing a lot of self-serving agrandizement of what I believe to be a non-existent profession, i.e. psychology. But I was wrong.In chapter 1, when May quotes W.B Yeates--"Science is the critique of myth," I became hooked. For this quote and its timing in the text shows the recognition of genius. 99.99% of psychology may be utter garbage and 99.99% of all psychologists may very well be parasitic biomass, but here is the 0.01%. Rollo May seems to have transcended his profession.In chapter 2, what did May's patient mean by "Satan was a Rebel for God"? Here May has a foot-note that Lucifer, the devil was apparently envious of Christ and that's what made him evil according to St. Thomas Aquinas.From Chapter Eight, page 128: "THE GREAT GATSBY is Fitzgerald's spiritual autobiography. He uses the word 'forever' often in this book. Maxwell Perkins [his editor] wrote him, 'You are able with an occasional glance at the sky to impart a sense of eternity.'"

May merges psychology, philosophy, and literature in a book that feeds the soul and convinces the reader how important fiction is, or at least should be.

the book is better than promised by the vendor. it arrived early. have not had chance to reread yet. mr. may always had philosophical and fascinating things to say about the psychological needs of the human animal.

Lets face it. Rollo May's thoughts and books are amazing. Valid now as it was the day he wrote. Read them all.
