About the Author

Os Guinness is an author and speaker living in the Washington, D.C., area. Born in China during World War II, Guinness left in 1951, after the Chinese Revolution. A graduate of the University of London and Oxford, Guinness is a former visiting fellow of the Brookings Institution. At the time I first read it, I was needing a new way of thinking about my life. Reading it caused me to take an inventory of my talents, dreams, skills, knowledge and attitudes. Having done that, I lined those beside my vocation and favorite pastimes. That review. mixed with the revelation that Guinness provides brought myself into focus in a way I had never seen myself.I began to appreciate my work as a outgrowth of who I am rather than as just what I did to make money. I began to see my interests and talents away from work in a similar way. Guinness's ideas gave a kind of legitimacy to what I am and like to do because I was permitted to see it all from the point of view of calling.There are certainly those with special gifts, whether they are writers, musicians, mathemeticians, scientists, or politicians. Because I am not one of those, I never thought of myself as special or unique or particularly important in the affairs of men. Yet, calling is that which brings purpose and direction for life and Guinness helped me see that. Even one with the meager talents and gifts that I have can make a difference in the world when what I have is married to the call that God places on every life, no matter who and where they are.Guinness starts with the premise that "there is no calling without a caller". Being that I am a Christian, I am happy to start with that beginning and already have a relationship with the Caller. But what Guinness adds to this is all that goes with that call. The call legitimizes your gifts and efforts when they are married to his purpose. Here is a tiny example. As a teenager when I was learning to play guitar and sing a bit, I had the dream that many do of playing in a rock back, having the curtain drawn back, a packed house cheering for the show to begin and playing the first notes of the music. That dream eventually came to be, but in a different form. Instead of playing in a rock band for a thousand screaming teenagers, I played in a 20-piece banjo band for a thousand blue haired ladies and gentlemen. It was no less exciting for me and represented the fulfillment of a dream. I could see how God had planted in me a desire to perform and bring pleasure to people at a certain time of life. That happened to me when I was 25 years old. At the age of 61, I am doing it still today. It is one of the ways that God gifted me and called me into his service. I am not a professional and make no money from it. I do it because it is in me to do. That is what calling is. I will always be grateful to Os Guinness and "The Call" for opening this door of purpose and understanding for me.

The Call was commended to me as a great book uncovering the true nature of calling and rescuing it from the captivity of specificity and exactitude. The commendation was abundantly fulfilled.The Call has proven to be a rich encouragement and exhortation relevant for all believers. Os Guinness relentlessly and exhaustively exhorts the believer to honor his or her call to live as a child of the King in every way possible. Having never read any works by Os Guinness I was not sure what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised but not only extremely high readability but also a comprehensive enrichment fueled by his obviously deep cultural and historical knowledge. I would venture to say a good quarter (if not third) of this book is quotation from such greats of the faith as GK Chesterson, Dorothy Sayers, Luther, Calvin, Bonhoeffer, and a very wide range of cultural and historical figures.Having finished the last fifth of the book in one sitting I find myself both emboldened and empowered by the broad context for fulfilling our call that Guinness puts forth. And by holding up so many examples from the halls of faith, Guinness encourages us that the type of calling he his suggesting has been lived over and over again in history, and many others have seen calling in much the same way he does. This is certainly no new or novel idea, but a rich and fulfilling distillation of Christian thought and life.Do not expect an exposition so much as a journey through the halls of calling's house. If you're expecting a "how to" on perceiving and fulfilling your specific occupational calling or job you will be disappointed, but this book is all the more for you. That is what I came to it for, but I have walked away with a far greater appreciation for the true calling of our God beyond specific occupational endeavors.The Call is almost certainly going to become an annual staple for me. I highly recommend it for believers in any stage of life.

all i can say is READ IT. JPII is purely amazing and Christ-like. He is full of wisdom and love. This book really shows the Catholic Church's love and respect for women of all kinds. Please read.

Broke it down after every section and helped me to understand my femininity. Love, love, love! Read it and then give to all your girlfriends!

My daughter had asked for this book as a Christmas or birthday gift. She was pleased when I got it for her; but even more pleased with the content, it's presentation and daily usefulness of readings and meditations. I and several others are waiting for a turn to read it.

True Feminism and Hope for the Future

In August 1988, the Pope released an Apostolic Letter entitled On the Dignity and Vocation of Women. It was revolutionary at the time, because it was the first papal document that addressed women and their unique role, not only in the Church, but in the world. Now, almost 30 years later, this document is just as relevant, if not more so.The document begins by talking about the timeliness of this Apostolic Letter. Pope John Paul II then explains how this topic was brought to light both in and before Vatican II. He reflects on the recent female Doctors of the Church and discusses his encyclical Redemptoris Mater. Part II reflects on Mary the Mother of God (Theotokos). In this section, he reflects on the fact that a woman (Mary) was at the center of salvation, because it was through her Fiat that Jesus came into the world. He also talks about how Mary is the ultimate example of a woman and her vocation. Part III takes us back to Genesis and man being made in God's Image. Part IV compares Eve and Mary. Part V focuses on Jesus Christ and His interaction with women. This is the most fascinating section as it discusses the value which He placed on them, how it was uncommon for that time, and how they were the first witnesses to the Resurrection. Part VI addresses motherhood and virginity, which are mentioned hand in hand in Christ's teaching, but share a distinctness to them as well. Part VII and VIII talk about the Bride of Christ and love.There has been a lot of talk about feminism lately, but that is false feminism. If you want to understand the true beauty of women and their vocation, I highly recommend this book. It not only contains the Pope's words, but reflections and points to ponder as well. Be sure to check out this book and other anniversary editions of Pope John Paul II's writings.

As a woman in today's society, I found this book so refreshing and so enlightening. No writer has ever approached the subject of feminism so intelligently and with such true divine inspiration. Any man or woman would enjoy reading this and find it full of truth and wisdom. It's especially encouraging for women today-- we who can be so undervalued and disrespected from Coors Light commercials that make us out to be undignified objects' of men's pleasure to groups like NARAL who insist that a mother's dignity is elevated by the ability to choose between herself and her child. Women are dignified, compassionate, strong creatures, and I think John Paul II captures this so eloquently in this apostolic letter.

Ms. Roach has been successful in making the serious, fundamental issues of existence and the scientific possibility of an afterlife both entertaining and insightful. I have only read one other book she has authored, Stiff (about the incredible ways in which the human body or parts thereof are used for research and other endeavors after death) and found it to be similarly enjoyable. Roach is adept at keeping her readers engaged by reporting on her research in a up-beat yet journalistic manner, interspersing her reporting frequently with her wry humor. If you have ever wondered about ghosts, near-death experiences, psychics and mediums, ectoplasm, or other "evidence" of the afterlife, Roach provides an objective look at each of these topics and does not disappoint. I would recommend this book for anyone who has ever had questions about life after death (in other words, everyone).

A very interesting read. I was worried that this book may be biased based on religious views but it wasn't. It gave an interesting look into many different beliefs without the authors point of view of right vs wrong. The author's sense of humor helps this book be a fun read instead of just another educational read.

The main thing for ME is that the author uses English in a gifted, professional manner. So refreshing to read this. The rise of easy self-publishing has promoted an "anyone can write" mentality --- no, anyone can't write. You need practice, skill, discipline, and - oh yeah - a decent-sized vocabulary.As to the meat of the book. A lot of ink was spent on accounts of people trying to prove or disprove the immaterial world by measuring material: ectoplasm, infra-sound, weight of the soul. Hmm. Not a lot of success either way. A very fun and humorous ride along the way though. And yes, there is some accounting of actual knowledge transfer from the 'other' realm - that's what floats MY boat.

For me, the first section or two weren't as smooth as her other books, but it's well worth it to read the whole book. Like Stiff, each section, or chapter, tackles a different facet or approach to the afterlife and there are a lot of different approaches. The subject is handled respectfully, it's informative and well written, and as you could expect from Mary Roach's writing, is very funny, but never disrespectful to the concepts she's exploring.

I liked the book sort of. It is well written and at times humorous but it reminds of a college report. Nothing special in my opinion and the title doesn't match the content at all. I bought it from a book club recommendation. I learned nothing new and at times was bored to death.

Still written in her usual witty prose, how ever the book tends to address more pseudo science than any real science indicating that there is little real scientific research into this topic and the few scientists that do want to pursue it are belittled by mainstream researchers. Not that it is a bad book but her previous books had a little more substance to them I thought. I'll still continue reading her work but I thought Stif and Bonk were better reads.Keep Exploring Mary

I have read two of Mary Roach`s other books, Stiff and Packing For Mars. Her style is witty and amusing, and Packing in particular was fascinating. I was a little disappointed in this one, perhaps because I wanted her to come to some sort of definitive conclusion. It`s certainly difficult subject matter. I don`t know that I would recommend this book...if you`'re trying to find a metaphysical answer in it you will likely be disappointed. I gave it three stars because I enjoy the author`s writing style so much.

It required very little convincing for me to immediately delve into "Spook," Mary Roach's sophomore literary effort. Her enthusiasm for her material is evident in her first book, "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavars." Like "Stiff", "Spook" is a compendium of wit, morbidity, and hilarious anectdotes which converge to form a collection of loosely related (in fact, afterlife is often the sole connector) examinations of what, exactly, actually happens when we die. Ultimately, Roach seeks to answer what really may be the 'ultimate question': Is there an afterlife? While her attempts are ultimately futile in a definitive scientific answer, the conclusion is generally that something happens after death. What this something is remains ambigious - either because we do not have the science to understand, or have not developed an adequate study method.Each section ('chapter' would be a misnomer , as they tend to be 20 - 30 pages in length) examines different methodologies of 'studying,' using what seems to be a generally loose version of the scientific method, the afterlife. The book begins in an anticlimactic fashion, with Roach's journey to follow an Indian researcher, who seeks to interview and categorize supposed instances of reincarnation. It is unfortunate that this chapter is the first delve into the material, as of all the sections, it seems to be the unflattering odd-duck: it is slow, verbose, and not as sharp with its language.The book goes on to considerably better itself in subsequent chapters. In contrast to "Stiff," "Spook" improves throgh the course of the book, the humor never becomes forced. The greater inclusion of her opinions, thoughts, and foibles. Roach explores studies of the afterlife ranging from the infamous '21 gram' experiment, to scientists studying the effect of electromagnetic and infrasound upon the human brain. She is brazen with her mistakes and is never aloof with her viewpoints. Rather than blindly following, or outright denying, what is presented throughout the book, she is objective with her analysis.Roach is talented at writing, for sure, and the inclusion of tangential stories and factoids keep the material fresh. The footnotes are not to be missed: each contains a snippet of Roach's wry, delightful insight paired with a quasi-related factoid. Indeed, the footnotes remain a gem of the book, housing some of the funnier tales of Roach's research.My own praise aside, there are a few shortfalls to "Spook." First, Mary Roach is evidently at the the very start of her foray into the afterlife (even explicitely stating such in the epilogue). Her explanations for experiments read considerably differently than her usual prose: this literary behavior indicates (to me, at least) that she is pulling her definitions from other sources, and only superficially rewriting them. While Roach is clearly comfortable with her own prose, her tone shifts dramatically when it comes to explaining more in-depth science. The book,as well, tends to lack in any in-depth analysis. Roach is candid with her responses and reactions, but only superficially examines the experiment setups. She is slow to question or needle her subjects on their work, which makes her ultimate conclusions about the different scientists and experiments somewhat questionable.Overall, a worthwhile read which delves into some very interesting subject matter. It is light on the 'heavy science,' and tends to fall into the tried-and-true regiment of anectdotes and witty commentary. Does it answer, then, the 'ultimate' question? ...Not entirely. Even if the 'ultimate' answer waffles from person to person, it's sure a lot of fun getting there.
