About the Author

Genevieve Kineke, born in 1960, converted to the faith as a young adult. In this section, he reflects on the fact that a woman (Mary) was at the center of salvation, because it was through her Fiat that Jesus came into the world. He also talks about how Mary is the ultimate example of a woman and her vocation. Part III takes us back to Genesis and man being made in God's Image. Part IV compares Eve and Mary. Part V focuses on Jesus Christ and His interaction with women. This is the most fascinating section as it discusses the value which He placed on them, how it was uncommon for that time, and how they were the first witnesses to the Resurrection. Part VI addresses motherhood and virginity, which are mentioned hand in hand in Christ's teaching, but share a distinctness to them as well. Part VII and VIII talk about the Bride of Christ and love.There has been a lot of talk about feminism lately, but that is false feminism. If you want to understand the true beauty of women and their vocation, I highly recommend this book. It not only contains the Pope's words, but reflections and points to ponder as well. As a woman in today's society, I found this book so refreshing and so enlightening. No writer has ever approached the subject of feminism so intelligently and with such true divine inspiration. Any man or woman would enjoy reading this and find it full of truth and wisdom. It's especially encouraging for women today-- we who can be so undervalued and disrespected from Coors Light commercials that make us out to be undignified objects' of men's pleasure to groups like NARAL who insist that a mother's dignity is elevated by the ability to choose between herself and her child. Women are dignified, compassionate, strong creatures, and I think John Paul II captures this so eloquently in this apostolic letter.

Ms. Roach has been successful in making the serious, fundamental issues of existence and the scientific possibility of an afterlife both entertaining and insightful. I have only read one other book she has authored, Stiff (about the incredible ways in which the human body or parts thereof are used for research and other endeavors after death) and found it to be similarly enjoyable. Roach is adept at keeping her readers engaged by reporting on her research in a up-beat yet journalistic manner, interspersing her reporting frequently with her wry humor. If you have ever wondered about ghosts, near-death experiences, psychics and mediums, ectoplasm, or other "evidence" of the afterlife, Roach provides an objective look at each of these topics and does not disappoint. I would recommend this book for anyone who has ever had questions about life after death (in other words, everyone).

A very interesting read. I was worried that this book may be biased based on religious views but it wasn't. It gave an interesting look into many different beliefs without the authors point of view of right vs wrong. The author's sense of humor helps this book be a fun read instead of just another educational read.

The main thing for ME is that the author uses English in a gifted, professional manner. So refreshing to read this. The rise of easy self-publishing has promoted an "anyone can write" mentality --- no, anyone can't write. You need practice, skill, discipline, and - oh yeah - a decent-sized vocabulary.As to the meat of the book. A lot of ink was spent on accounts of people trying to prove or disprove the immaterial world by measuring material: ectoplasm, infra-sound, weight of the soul. Hmm. Not a lot of success either way. A very fun and humorous ride along the way though. And yes, there is some accounting of actual knowledge transfer from the 'other' realm - that's what floats MY boat.

For me, the first section or two weren't as smooth as her other books, but it's well worth it to read the whole book. Like Stiff, each section, or chapter, tackles a different facet or approach to the afterlife and there are a lot of different approaches. The subject is handled respectfully, it's informative and well written, and as you could expect from Mary Roach's writing, is very funny, but never disrespectful to the concepts she's exploring.

I liked the book sort of. It is well written and at times humorous but it reminds of a college report. Nothing special in my opinion and the title doesn't match the content at all. I bought it from a book club recommendation. I learned nothing new and at times was bored to death.

Still written in her usual witty prose, how ever the book tends to address more pseudo science than any real science indicating that there is little real scientific research into this topic and the few scientists that do want to pursue it are belittled by mainstream researchers. Not that it is a bad book but her previous books had a little more substance to them I thought. I'll still continue reading her work but I thought Stif and Bonk were better reads.Keep Exploring Mary

I have read two of Mary Roach`s other books, Stiff and Packing For Mars. Her style is witty and amusing, and Packing in particular was fascinating. I was a little disappointed in this one, perhaps because I wanted her to come to some sort of definitive conclusion. It`s certainly difficult subject matter. I don`t know that I would recommend this book...if you`'re trying to find a metaphysical answer in it you will likely be disappointed. I gave it three stars because I enjoy the author`s writing style so much.

It required very little convincing for me to immediately delve into "Spook," Mary Roach's sophomore literary effort. Her enthusiasm for her material is evident in her first book, "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavars." Like "Stiff", "Spook" is a compendium of wit, morbidity, and hilarious anectdotes which converge to form a collection of loosely related (in fact, afterlife is often the sole connector) examinations of what, exactly, actually happens when we die. Ultimately, Roach seeks to answer what really may be the 'ultimate question': Is there an afterlife? While her attempts are ultimately futile in a definitive scientific answer, the conclusion is generally that something happens after death. What this something is remains ambigious - either because we do not have the science to understand, or have not developed an adequate study method.Each section ('chapter' would be a misnomer , as they tend to be 20 - 30 pages in length) examines different methodologies of 'studying,' using what seems to be a generally loose version of the scientific method, the afterlife. The book begins in an anticlimactic fashion, with Roach's journey to follow an Indian researcher, who seeks to interview and categorize supposed instances of reincarnation. It is unfortunate that this chapter is the first delve into the material, as of all the sections, it seems to be the unflattering odd-duck: it is slow, verbose, and not as sharp with its language.The book goes on to considerably better itself in subsequent chapters. In contrast to "Stiff," "Spook" improves throgh the course of the book, the humor never becomes forced. The greater inclusion of her opinions, thoughts, and foibles. Roach explores studies of the afterlife ranging from the infamous '21 gram' experiment, to scientists studying the effect of electromagnetic and infrasound upon the human brain. She is brazen with her mistakes and is never aloof with her viewpoints. Rather than blindly following, or outright denying, what is presented throughout the book, she is objective with her analysis.Roach is talented at writing, for sure, and the inclusion of tangential stories and factoids keep the material fresh. The footnotes are not to be missed: each contains a snippet of Roach's wry, delightful insight paired with a quasi-related factoid. Indeed, the footnotes remain a gem of the book, housing some of the funnier tales of Roach's research.My own praise aside, there are a few shortfalls to "Spook." First, Mary Roach is evidently at the the very start of her foray into the afterlife (even explicitely stating such in the epilogue). Her explanations for experiments read considerably differently than her usual prose: this literary behavior indicates (to me, at least) that she is pulling her definitions from other sources, and only superficially rewriting them. While Roach is clearly comfortable with her own prose, her tone shifts dramatically when it comes to explaining more in-depth science. The book,as well, tends to lack in any in-depth analysis. Roach is candid with her responses and reactions, but only superficially examines the experiment setups. She is slow to question or needle her subjects on their work, which makes her ultimate conclusions about the different scientists and experiments somewhat questionable.Overall, a worthwhile read which delves into some very interesting subject matter. It is light on the 'heavy science,' and tends to fall into the tried-and-true regiment of anectdotes and witty commentary. Does it answer, then, the 'ultimate' question? ...Not entirely. Even if the 'ultimate' answer waffles from person to person, it's sure a lot of fun getting there.

I read this story in TWO sittings. I read up to the characters entering the maze the first time, then read all the way to the end the 2nd time. Mary pulled me into the story and had me on edge for most of the story.Rhen, a main character with plenty of spunk and sass, lives in a world where women are undervalued, plus she straddles the worlds of the rich and the poor. As if her life isn't already a balancing act between what she wants and what her society wants/expects, necessity demands she take drastic steps to change her circumstances.The plot moved along at a quick pace with enough conflict and urgency to keep me on the edge of my seat. I found the motives for the characters believable. The maze was totally not what I expected, and I loved it!The romance thread and familial threads were nice. And the unique characters were fun.I would recommend this book to any reader who enjoys strong female characters and a good supernatural/fantasy tale.

I absolutely loved every aspect of the world she built which was full of fantasy, friendship, historical fiction, science and magic.The world itself was unique. I loved how she blended a believable world of science set back in a historical time with a magical one. The story was so immersive I forgot on several occasions that I wasn't just reading historical fiction. During those times, a fantasy element would pop up and surprise me such as the wail of a siren or the glimpse of a ghoul at night. I loved those subtle mentions of a world that was clearly not our own!The variety of characters, especially males, in this story was astounding. Rhen's female coming of age story definitely has it's many difficult characters including patronizing elderly males and the male friend who thinks women should be content to only marry. However, it also shows you the male friend that encourages Rhen to keep trying and a father that treats his daughter as an intelligent equal. I understand that this tale seems to be a feminist story, but I appreciated that the author never bashed the opposite sex to tell it. The author merely presents you with a variety of good and bad characters and let's you make up your own mind from their actions while reading. This is so rare and I appreciateThis story just proves you can uplift those that need it without tearing down others. There were also several representations of disabilities and different types of families that blended in seamlessly with the story. I loved that it felt completely natural and not overdone.I loved that this story took it's time in the beginning to develop all of these characters, the middle with the maze contest, and an ending that never felt rushed. I really enjoyed reading about Rhen, Seleni, Beryll and Lute. Rhen's home life, love for her family and education through her father is what truly led her to the maze and I'm glad the author took the time to make it more than a story about a contest.This story felt like a letter to girls everywhere or to anyone that finds themselves too scared to follow their dreams. I highly recommend it if you need an uplifting fantasy story that will keep you turning pages, put a smile on your face and make your day!I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through NetGalley. She is a precocious and fiercely independent seventeen-year-old girl whose entire life mission is to bury herself in scientific experiments with her father to find a cure to a disease that is not only ravaging her community but her mother as well. Rhen realizes that their combined efforts are futile whilst using the rudimentary laboratory equipment and supplies she has access to, so she formulates a plan to disguise herself as a boy to enter the labyrinth competition for a prestigious scholarship to attend the all-male Stemwick University, which is sponsored by the mysterious and magical Mr. Holm (who is financially endowed).I fully empathized with Rhen, and I absolutely loved watching her character develop throughout the story. I found her humble beginnings absolutely heartbreaking because this hit so close to home. I personally comprehend what it is like to have familial troubles be the driving force for an education and not letting anyone or anything stand in your path to success. What made me love Rhen even more is even though she knows that she has a disadvantage, she refuses to allow anyone to pity her or receive a handout. Her mother was disowned from a prominent, aristocratic family because she married Rhen’s father who was of a lower class. Rhen is invited to the elaborate events hosted by her aunt and uncle, but she refuses to immerse herself in that world where people like her are consistently mocked for their inability to overcome their dire situations.As far as action goes for this book, it is a slow builder, so don’t go into this thinking that each page is going to knock your socks off. The first half of the story lays the foundation for Rhen’s character. You see her digging into the chest cavity of a cadaver, analyzing blood smears under a microscope, and evaluation concoctions to be injected into her rat subject, Lady. I think to most, this is the “boring part” of the story since it’s much more technical but without much “action”. However, as a fellow scientist, I was gripping my seat to know the compositions of her solutions and the findings under her microscope, but hey, not for everyone. To me, this part of the book really highlights how dire Rhen’s situation is because without the advanced scientific training, Rhen and her father will never find a cure for her dying mother.Once Rhen and the other contestants enter the labyrinth to compete for the coveted scholarship to Stemwick University, I could not read the pages fast enough. So much action happens in such a short time span (due to the challenges that contestants are faced with), which left my head spinning trying to comprehend what I read. The assumptions that I had about other side characters as well as the conclusion were completely unexpected.This book is what girl who aspire to dream big in the STEM fields have been waiting for. Take charge of the situation, offer a plan of action, ask for support and show absolute confidence in a positive outcome. -Get rid of unnecessary middle layers of authority. Direct leadership is more efficient in emergency situations. -Plan several options in detail. Get a grasp of the possible consequences of each, always keeping your eye on the big picture. -Streamline supplies and operations so they won't slow you down. -Give your staff an occasional reality check to keep them on course. After time, people will start to treat a crisis situation as business as usual and lose their focus. -Keep your malcontents close to you. Resist your instinct to avoid them and instead try to win them over and gain their support. -Defuse tension. In high-stress situations use humor to put people at ease, and keep your staff busy. -Let go of the past. Don't waste time or energy regretting pa? mistakes or fretting over what you can't change. -Ask for advice and information from a variety of sources, but ultimately make decisions based on your own best judgment. -Let all the people involved in the crisis participate in the solution even if that means doling out some work that is less than vital. -Be patient. Sometimes the best course of action is to do nothing but watch and wait. -Give your staff plenty of time to get used to the idea of an unpopular decision by leaking early details."7- "SHACKLETON'S WAY OF FORMING GROUPS FOR THE TOUGHEST TASKS. -The best way to handle the biggest tasks is often to divide the Staff into teams. Create units that are self-sufficient, but understand they won't all be equal. It is more important that the teams are balanced when considering the big picture. -Make sure you have some cracker-jack groups that can handle the toughest challenges. They can also help others, to ensure mo team falls far behind. -Give the tedious assignments to the workhorses who don't complain. Let them know you are aware that you are giving them an outsized task and that you count on their goodwill and exceptional fortitude to get the job done. -Empower the team leaders so they have the authority to handle their own group, but keep an eye on the details. Never let yourself be surprised by problems down the road. -Don't be afraid to change your mind when you see your plan isn't working. You won't look indecisive if you show the logic of your changes. -Be self-sacrificing. Give whatever perks it is in your power to dispense. -Give a show of confidence in those acting in your stead. It's important that your support staff maintain in your absence the same level of competency you set. -Never point out the weaknesses of individuals in front of others. Often, it's better to let everyone share in a remedy aimed at a few. Chances are, even the strongest will benefit from it."8- "SHACKLETON'S WAY OF FINDING THE DETERMINATION TO MOVE FORWARD. -Go-for-broke risks become more acceptable as options narrow. Sometimes the potential rewards at the end of a daring venture justify the risk of suffering a spectacular failure. -Seek inspiration in enduring wisdom that has comforted or motivated you or others in times of crisis. It will get you through the most physically and emotionally draining times and help you to keep your perspective. -Congratulate yourself and others for a job well done. A pat on the back or a sincere handshake is an expression of personal thanks and gratitude that has never gone out of fashion. -Motivate your staff to be independent. If you have been a good leader, they will have the determination to succeed on their own. -Let your staff inspire you. At times, an overwhelming workload may force you to consider lowering your standards. Remember that the final product must represent the best efforts of the entire group. -Even in the most stressful situations, don't forget that you are part of a larger world that might benefit from your expertise. In turn, participating in community and family activities can give you skills useful on the job. -Make sure the whole job is done. Your staff may be able to call it quits after the heavy lifting is over, but you are responsible for seeing the work through to its successful completion."9- "SHACKLETON'S THOUGHTS ON LEADERSHIP. -'There are lots of good things in the world, but I'm not sure that comradeship is not the best of them all—to know that you can do something big for another chap." -"Optimism is true moral courage." -"Leadership is a fine thing, but it has its penalties. And the greatest penalty is loneliness." -'A man must shape himself to a new mark directly the old one goes to ground." -'The loyalty of your men is a sacred trust you carry. It is something which must never be betrayed, something you must live up to." -"I have often marveled at the thin fine which separates success from failure." -'You often have to hide from them not only the truth, but your feelings about the truth. You may know that the facts are dead against you, but you mustn't say so." -'If you're a leader, a fellow that other fellows look to, you've got to keep going."

This book was really good for many reasons. While this book is teaching lessons about leadership it is also telling a great story. Other books (especially the ones I've read for my class) often give advice or a lesson and then give examples, but in this book it gives readers a story to follow allowing people become more engrossed with the characters, setting, etc. It's easier to put yourself in this perspective. It also help me realize that you don't have to be in a position where you're in charge of other people to be a leader. You can be a leader just by the small decisions you make everyday and the influence/impact you leave on people. I would suggest for people to read this book.

Shackleton’s Way is not your traditional book on leadership. Instead of offering the generic advice of most works on leadership, this book provides practical and in-depth examples of how Sir Ernest Shackleton lead his crew to survive a life and death voyage in the Arctic between 1914 and 1916.Divided into 8 chapters, the book begins by chronicling Shackleton’s path to leadership, delving into his family background, upbringing, and how his early career laid the foundation for his leadership. Chapter 2 explores how Shackleton selected and vetted his crew for his voyage aboard the Endurance. Chapter 3 discusses how Shackleton created a spirit of camaraderie aboard his ship and how he was progressive in how he broke down the traditional hierarchies aboard ships to build that camaraderie. Chapter 4 shows how Shackleton drew out the best of each individual crew member and how he helped each crewman reach their potential. Chapter 5 reveals how Shackleton effectively lead in the midst of crisis and created a spirit of optimism during the worst of times. Chapter 6 examines Shackleton’s expertise at forming teams for challenging assignments and situations. Chapter 7 demonstrates Shackleton’s ability to take charge and take calculated risks to save his crew and overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Chapter 8 concludes the book with a look at Shackleton’s legacy as an explorer, as a leader, and as an inspiration to his loyal crew and modern day leaders.Each chapter weaves together the harrowing adventure and tales of Shackleton’s exploration aboard his ship the Endeavor to the Arctic, punctuating each incident with examples of his leadership style. Each chapter connects the story and uses aspects of each stage of his journey to highlight different aspects of Shackleton’s leadership style and highlight lessons that can be learned from the examples he set. At the end of each chapter is a bullet pointed list that highlights the strategies and style of Shackleton’s leadership. Following each of these lists is a modern day example of someone who was inspired by Shackleton and modelled their leadership after his example, such as Jim Lovell of the failed Apollo 13 mission.For me, the best part of this book was the repeated theme that, although Shackleton’s voyages as an Arctic explore were largely unsuccessful, his ability to inspire and lead by example continued to breed optimism into his crew and, ultimately, saved the lives of everyone on the Endurance. His optimism and preparation were boundless and allowed him to be a great leader who was a master of crisis management. Modern day leaders can learn from Shackleton’s examples of how to lead with loyalty, discipline, unselfishness, courage, optimism, and intelligence.
