I liked this romance. I enjoy reading, every now and then, OTT heroes that take charge and get what they want...and hero wanted heroine! The story starts with us learning about how hero fell for heroine before she even knows about him. He even had cameras placed in her apartment and he does late night visit to just see her. We also learn why he happens to have met her and what his plans are.Things take unexpected turn that forces hero to get to know heroine quicker than what he had planned. He had wanted to wait until everything was over, but the men he is working with are forcing his hand on this one. So he does what he needs to do to keep her safe and away from these men that want to use her to get keys to her bank vault. He is sincere in his feelings towards heroine, he just keeps fact he is going to steal from her bank away from her. They spend a great weekend together before he has to go in and do what he needs to do. He plans for her never to find out since they will be in disguise.Unfortunately, he is working with men that are just pure evil and one in particular is jealous of him (he also wanted heroine and has been watching hero so figures out hero is hiding something from them). The day of the bank robbery goes as planned for hero (gets what he wants) but also goes horrible wrong. Thank goodness he planned for something like this to happened, but that blows his cover with the heroine.He takes her to his gateway and from then on out he works to convince her he loves her and wants spend his whole life with her. She is very hurt and upset at first, but she finally moves forward and forgives. In this romance you get couple epilogues that move forward months after each other, lets us see how couple is doing. I enjoyed reading these epilogues considering they are living in a small island.This is safe romance. There is no OW or OM. Hero is heroine's first. Hero is OTT and loyal. Steamy read, so be prepared for some explicit love scenes. These are the types of books I enjoy from Alexa Riley. I would recommend this read. Little longer than her usual reads, but I enjoyed it.

I love smutty and dirty sometimes and Alexa sure has a way with those dirty little moments. This is an instalove book full of hot sexy steamy scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat.Sean is stuck on Tessa right from the first moment he meets her. She was never suppose to be in the picture, but Sean wasn’t letting her go. He usually works alone but this time he finds himself working with some very shady people. He knows Tessa might be pissed but he is willing to do anything to keep her safe.Tessa doesn’t get out much and lives a pretty boring life. Her roommate is always putting her down and trying to make her feel bad. So when Sean shows her some attention it catches her off guard. She knows it’s fast but she can’t stop the feelings she has for him.Just when I thought everything was going good… Bam things went crazy. I found myself wondering how things would play out. It’s a quick read but has lots of hot steamy moments. Can’t wait to see what Alexa has next.

He loves her so much that he'd go to extremes to have her. I absolutely LOVE Sean. He may look like a bad boy and be a criminal however he is a sweetheart, incredibly loving and kind. I love this story, I love the love at first sight, the connection and tangible chemistry between Sean and Tessa. I love their HEA too. Thief is a wonderful addition to the Breeding series. If you loved Coach and Mechanic, you'll fall in love with Thief too.

I'm a sucker for heist movies, and my alter ego works in banking, so I WAS LIVING for Thief! Sean Sparrow is the perfect alpha, while still keeping that tender heart for Tessa, the bank teller who is the key to it all. Sean has an overall ulterior motive, not only with the heist, but also for his need for Tessa. After all is said and done, he will do all it takes to show her that his decisions all were made to give them a better life. Again, without being a cookie cutter copy of their other works, it's insta-love, insta-sexy, and insta-AMAZING! I love it! Plus... I can't get enough of that cover. Love me some bearded men! Can't wait to have this thing on my bookshelf!

In the healthiest organizations, there is mutual respect and mutual trust.These are among Beverly Langford’s final thoughts: “Rules of etiquette aren’t meant to make you pompous or uptight. Indeed, they grew out of society’s need to make the world a fairer, kinder, more comfortable place to live. Be ingenious and innovative the way you apply the rules to your own circumstances. As one practice becomes irrelevant or outdated, come up with a version that meets current needs but keeps alive the spirit of the principle. Ultimately, all the guidelines on how to behave properly in any social situation come down to a simple principle: Treat everyone in a manner that values everyone and denigrates no one.”I presume to add this admonition from Margaret Mead, one that I have tried to follow since I first encountered it: "Always remember that you are absolutely unique. We’re all looking for a competitive edge…it may just be an etiquette edge! I strongly recommend this book.

Bought this for a college introductory business course. Being in the work force for 20+ years a lot of the information seems common sense, but there is plenty to take from this. Still in the course and transferring from field to office work, combination of the course and book has helped me understand the office "etiquette" better and with working with younger office personnel. Worth the low price to own.

I recently read an article in a popular magazine that quoted this author. I was so horrified that she actually recommends that employees should have to check email while they are on vacation - once in the morning and once in the evening. Worst advice ever! The point of vacation is to disconnect and recharge.

About the Author

David Tench McKean is an illustrator, photographer, comic book artist, graphic designer, filmmaker and musician. His work incorporates drawing, painting, photography, collage, found objects, digital art and sculpture. After a trip to New York in 1986 during which he failed to find work as a comics artist, McKean met writer Neil Gaiman and the pair collaborated on a short graphic novel of disturbing childhood memories, Violent Cases, published in 1987. This was followed in 1988 by a Black Orchid miniseries (again with Gaiman) and Hellblazer covers for DC Comics. Beginning in 1989 he produced the covers for Gaiman's celebrated series The Sandman, all its collected editions and many of its spin-offs, and the Batman graphic novel, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, with writer Grant Morrison (1989). McKean has gone on to collaborate further with Neil Gaiman in both print and film.

Dave McKean is my favorite artist and this book is one of the best he has done. It is one of the most beautiful books I own. The art work is just incredible. While talking about such issues as war and mental illness it does so with beautiful and intricate images. The story of one man's life and how it was destroyed by war, even though he managed to miss the worst of it. The book is presented as a selection of dreams from his earliest to his last. Very very highly recommended. One I will be reading over and over.

While this is not McKean's best work, it's an interesting, ambitious book that serves as an introduction to Paul Nash's work and life. I do understand the negative reviews, but I think this work is best read as a teaser for the larger 14-18 Now project, which serves, in part, to explore the legacy of WWI in the British imagination. In lesser hands, this probably would have just been a project flyer, but McKean, always the visionary, decided to create a lasting work of art in its own right. I'm not sure "Black Dog" completely succeeds as a singular work outside of the context of the exhibition, but it certainly did entice me to learn more about Nash and his work. Any McKean meditation on life, death, madness, war, and the nature of art and inspiration is definitely something that is worth reading. Plus, the art, as one might expect, is masterful-- a remarkable stew of styles that oozes atmosphere.

Beautiful book. But, what else would you expect from Dave McKean?

If the previous reviews are any indication, most readers will be drawn to this book by the name of Dave McKean, not the name of Paul Nash -- and if the negative reviews are any indication, they'll find something rather disappointingly different from what they'd expected. I can understand their feelings ... but as a reader who's as much a devotee of Nash as of McKean, I'd urge them to give this book a second try. It's a fine introduction to the life, work & soul of a wounded, gifted British artist who found personal meaning in the midst of horrific destruction through his art. He deserves to be much better known than he is, and this slim volume may well help in that regard.That said, Dave McKean's art is still a big & worthwhile draw, depicting the psyche of the man expressed by his words in vivid, memorable imagery. He brings both brutal directness & subtle understanding of his subject through varied, beautifully chosen styles of illustration. It's not a story in the usual sense, not a straightforward narrative -- it's a harrowing meditation on war & its effect on human beings, meant to be deeply felt & experienced by the reader. Again, I understand the frustrations of those who wanted something more traditional, more reader friendly -- basically, well-crafted entertainment -- but to my mind, this has more staying power in the end. Highly recommended!

Disclaimer: I've enjoyed everything of Dave McKean's that I've ever read, and in the early 90's he quickly became my favorite Artist. Over the last 25+ years my admiration for his work has never waned. As such, I'm a teeny bit biased when reading his latest work.Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash is really nothing like McKean's previous work. It's an historical fiction based on a real person, Paul Nash, a British photojournalist during World War I. The story twines around Nash's experiences during the war, and its lasting effects on him. The plot is irrelevant - it's the story telling, the dialogue, and the artwork that matter. McKean is a master at choosing the right art style for the particular story, or in this case the particular scene. The story is told in multiple chapters, each rendered in a different style, and then within those chapters are further sub-divisions with their stylistic changes as well: flashbacks, dreams, and hallucinations. In lesser hands, it would have come off as disjointed and patchwork, but in McKean's the effect is one of a greater emotional verisimilitude enhancing the reader's absorption in the story.If I had any critique, it would only be that in the end the story left me a bit cold. I know I will find myself re-reading various chapters and passages, and marveling at certain pages, but I don't know that I would enjoy re-reading the entire book. Of course, the same can be said for many "classics", in my experience, and in the end damages not a whit the overall quality of the work.Highly recommended.Disclosure: I was provided an electronic reader's copy of the book to review.

This is a very intelligent book, written with deep knowledge and humor. One is bound to learn quite a bit from the contents of the book. Among other things it aims at explaining the relationships that exist between language and mental evolution, social evolution and cultural evolution, which is what humans are about. But for the grace of me, I cannot understand how Amazon can release Kindle versions of books where some portions of the text are POSITIVELY UNREADABLE. The font is microscopic, causing the reader to have to skip some of the text. In my view this is quite inexcusable, as the technology is there to avoid the problem. This reflects at best a sense of carelessness from the people in charge of formatting the Kindle text, at worst a complete contempt toward the customer. A book SHOULD NOT BE KINDLE-RELEASED if it is not 100% readable. A lot still has to be done to make Kindle books at par with printed material. (Note: I have Kindle Paper White, one of the latest devices available.)

Guy Deutscher will be your new favourite linguist. His sincerity and wide-ranging admiration for linguistic achievement win one over. As a bonus, Deutscher is truly funny, no smart-ass élitist like Steven Pinker or John McWhorter. An eccentric feature of Unfolding is its incorporating fictional dialogues among two non-professional linguists and a linguistics professor. Not the character in the dialogue Deutscher hovers nearest to but only by his sufferance present in the dialogue at all is a representative of the (also fictional) “Royal Society for the Protection of English.” Elsewhere, in a similar vein, Deutcher recalls the great 19C romantic-linguist August Schleicher with qualified approval. Compare such allowances to the up-front hostility of Bas Aart’s Modern Grammar: “Readers hoping to find confirmation [here] that the so-called split infinitive is odious…will be disappointed” (Preface). Deutscher’s relative openmindedness in these regards bodes well for our opinion of the book as a whole.The thesis of Unfolding is that changes in language are the work of opposing cyclical forces. The Gothic word for “guest” was “gast,” and the plural of “gast” was “gastiz.” The “a” and “i” of “gastiz” requiring different mouth positions in quick succession, “gastiz” underwent what is known as a-mutation: the colouring of an “a” by a subsequent “i” that makes the “a” easier to pronounce (120). After a-mutation, which made {a} into {eh}, the singular-plural pair became gast/gestiz. Emphasis being on the first syllable of “gestiz” and the pair already being distinguishable from each other by this vowel-shift, the terminal “z” wore off leaving only “i,” which was soon even further eroded to “ə” (schwa). The mid-word a/e feature caught on as a paradigm—as students of modern German know, or wish they knew, all too well. Thus did one “blind change” (194), which destroyed part of German word structure, prompt analogical extension and lead, ultimately, to the shining new edifice of nominal German umlaut.Deutscher’s is a brilliant model of language change, but I have a few questions for him. One involves the fact that some blind changes seem to have lead to permanent destruction. According to Benjamin Forston III, a barrage of syncope and apocope “[devastated]” Old Irish verbs and especially verbs compounded with one or more preverbs (323); as a result, the absolute and conjunct forms even of relatively simple verbs can look entirely and preposterously unalike (324). What but confusion did such erosion bring for the Insular Celts and the students of the Celtic language thereafter? Shouldn’t they have fought (negative) change off insofar as they could? And regarding the possibility of fighting off change, isn’t Sanskrit, whose very name means “[carefully] assembled,” an instance of a language consciously defying erosion? And isn’t conservative Senatorial Latin another instance? Deutcher needs standards of positive and negative change.

A fascinating and well-written book.Deutscher describes how languages change over time, and he offers some explanations for the changes. And he does this with some flair; it's more Bill Bryson than textbook.He shows how the slang of today becomes the formal, proper language of tomorrow. This process has been occurring for millennia. It's interesting to hear the criticisms of ancient Roman commentators about the careless language of the day.He also gives some insight into how certain languages work. I'd always wondered about the various salaams, shaloms, and the like in Semitic languages. Why are they so similar, but not exactly the same? And what about Latin case structure - what is that all about? Deutscher explains some of these potentially tedious topics in an interesting and informative manner.After reading this book, you'll never hear language quite the same way again.Essential reading for grammar Nazis!

After reading Tom Wolfe's last book, which lambasted Noam Chomsky's chokehold on the nature and evolution of language, I went back to this book which makes an impressive, relatively non-controversial case on how language and its components evolved. He is very, very careful not to engage in the intellectual and academic politics that Wolfe reveled in. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the origins of human consciousness and culture. It's a pretty easy read for an interested layman.

A phenomenal book on the evolution of human language written with incredible wit and humor, as well as great erudition and intelligence. Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning how and why language changes over the ages. As a speaker of both English and a Semitic language I found this book especially interesting as these are two language family groups that the author goes into a great deal of detail about. I would, however, have appreciated more references to the tonal languages of Asia as I know nothing of their grammar and wonder if this language family undergoes the same processes the Semitic and Indo-European languages do.

I am sending it back. 100 pages for over $13? Cannot be anything better than you can read on wikipedia! Don't believe the glowing reviews unless they are all from 3rd graders.

It’s good. I enjoyed seeing the time period through the efforts important people of the time. No surprises, but then how could there be?

The Renaissance a time of recovery from the dark ages where a lot of innovation was lost.

I thought this book was a good over all review of that period in time. Before I wrote my review, I noticed that one reviewer said he learned nothing new and all can be found on Wikipedia, well maybe he is right, but this is not meant to be a scholarly work that breaks new ground. The Captivating History Series is more for people who just want to learn a bit about history and not willing (or want to) read a college level history book that is more bogged down in details. But is written in such a way that even a college history major (like me) can enjoy it and also learn something. I knew about this period but got a chance to review what I learned and managed to learn a few new things too.

The Renaissance has always been interesting to me, perhaps because I grew up in Europe and have had the pleasure of seeing a lot of the art and architecture from the time. This guide by Captivating History hits the main highlights of the era as well as taught me a few new things! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about some of the great thinkers, scientists and artists of The Renaissance. Its just unfortunate that the females (other than high society) weren't able to search and find their potential at the same time! Well Done!

A very nice addition to read about many different individuals & their accomplishments all in one book. Also, the different devadting events are discussed as Europe transformed from the Dark Agex to the Renaissance. In every culture or civilization certain event are deemed necessary fo it to grow .A super marvelous informative book really opened my eyes to new information because all I knew before was just the very basic information covered in textbooks.Great job by Captivating History!

This period of time is one that has both interested me and confounded me in equal measure. This book cleared up many things that I didn't really understand before. It's well worth reading.

It was an informative read dealing with figures and times of the Renaissance. What you might not have known or have forgotten, you can learn reading this read.

A beautiful presentation book, with commentary in the chassidic/Chabad tradition.

After reviewing many versions of this book, I am very pleased with this particular version. Further, it was quick and easy to order and was received promptly.

The book did not come in the binding that was advertised. The condition was god but not like new. I thought about returning it but it would be difficult to find the edition advertised. Im keeping it but its not what was advertised by a long shot

i got a white copy that looks different that than the one pictured it is also a different shape. i don't think that I got what I requested
