I’m kicking myself. That’s how good this book is.I’m kicking myself, because I can’t believe I didn’t read this sooner.This series comes highly recommended by several of my trusted review sources, and, though it’s an amazing series (judging by the first book, at least), it’s also incredibly underhyped. And that makes me sad, because Finnikin has everything bookworms could possibly want in a good YA high fantasy: strong and vivid characters, a steady-yet-unpredictable plot (the twist blew my mind, it was so clever), a wonderful romance that does not overpower the rest of the novel, and solid, detailed world-building. I was so happy.I loved every single side character in this book (except for Froi, though he grew on me eventually). They’re all such fighters, so fierce and strong in their own ways (especially Evanjalin and Trevanion, both of whom I was cheering for SO HARD). They’ve all undergone hardship or trauma of some sort since the five days of the unspeakable (the name for the assassination of Lumatere’s royal family). The people of Lumatere are refugees, scattered and suffering, and I loved that Marchetta chose to portray a hurting, broken nation rather than one simply corrupt from the inside. Instead of focusing mainly on the cruelty of the current powers at hand, Marchetta focuses on the suffering and the humanity of the subjects, making their exile a matter of the heart rather than just a political issue. She characterizes the island of Skuldenore not by its boundaries or its nations, but by the people themselves and by the cultures and causes they hold.It’s something I’ve seen before, but not the way she portrayed it. It felt so fresh and so real, and my heart ached for the people of Lumatere and sympathized with their plight. I was rooting for all of these characters every step of the way.I’ve mentioned how the plot is steady, but unpredictable. What I mean by that is that the plot does not meander and stays course, but still has several twists which kept me on the edge of my seat. I won’t spoil it for you, but I’ll tell you this: You’ll think you know exactly what’s going to happen, but, once you get to a certain point in this book, you’ll completely reevaulate your assumptions.Finally, the romance. It was slow-burn and gradual and stubborn, just like the two characters it involved. I loved how fierce both of those characters are, and how they rub off of each other so well. They’re explosive, but in a slow and growing way, like rocks that create a spark, which expands into a fire that slowly warms you up. Even though they clash in several ways and they’re both strong-willed, they complement each other very nicely. (And, honestly, they’re probably one of my OTPs [One True Pairings].) Their relationship is a great reminder that nobody’s perfect and that compromise is necessary in relationships.And the best part about it? Though it’s intense, it’s only an undertone to the main plot, never distracting from the rest of the story or the characters’ purpose. I loved that, just like I loved them.If you enjoy YA fantasy and you’re looking for some great high fantasy, please, please, please check this book out. It’s very rare that I can love a book as completely as I loved this one. Books like this remind me why I love reading so much.

After reading Jellicoe Road last year and gushing all about Melina's writing, I was eagerly anticipating starting the rest of her books. While I was excited back then, it's certainly take some time for me to finally pick up Finnikin of the Rock, the first of the Lumatere Chronicles, and I finally did so as a participant in the read-along hosted by Hannah. I honestly had difficulty really getting into the story at the beginning, but eventually, a few chapters in, I found myself extremely invested in the outcome of this story and the lives of these intricately written characters. Finnikin of the Rock is not the easiest of books to read, but I found it to be well worth my while.The book was daunting to me at the start, and for the first few chapters, I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. This had a lot to do with the way the story is written, which is a road block that I also encountered with Jellicoe Road. After a few chapters, my brain had adjusted to the story and I was eager to see what was going to happen from there. So, I will warn all of you - it does take some time to get invested in this novel.A core element of a good fantasy novel is strong world-building. While there's certainly still a bit of mystery left for the readers, Finnikin of the Rock boasted a nice, strong foundation of the world that this series is set in. Every single place mentioned, every culture referred to is all particular to this novel. While it may be confusing to most readers, I soaked it all up, fascinated by the little details that Melina wove into her bigger picture storyline. It helped that there was a map at the front of the book (which I took a screen cap of) to help me navigate during the journey Finnikin and company take.But what really sets this novel apart, at least for me, are the characters. Melina writes this entire cast of characters that are complex, real and surprisingly easy to relate to. Each character was memorable and unique, and I find that a week or two after finishing the novel, I'm still thinking about them all. This is not to say that I always liked every single character in the book; in fact, I'm pretty sure that I went through a phase where I teetered on the brink of hating each and every single one of them (except, perhaps, Beatriss and Balthazar) because I didn't always like their choices. I loved the fact that this happened because it just drove home the point that these characters aren't necessarily perfect or right all the time, which made them truly pop out to me.Finnikin is actually not my favorite, in spite of the fact that the story mostly revolves around him. He's been journeying with his mentor, Sir Topher, for years, visiting exile camps and trying to find a place to create a "new Lumatere" since the old one appeared to be lost to them. Finnikin grated on my nerves at times. Sometimes, he was too focused on the future and determined to put his past behind him; other times, he dwelt on the past and the people who had died or suffered after the loss of their beloved Lumatere. And there were plenty of times when I felt like he lacked courage. But the reason why I do have a soft spot for him is because this self-doubt, denial and desire to flee or forget is so very human. While I didn't necessarily agree with him all the time, I could understand him and his motives.Evanjalin is my favorite, despite the fact that I was sorely tempted to yell at her at times. She's stubborn and tough, determined and mysterious, kick-ass yet still very vulnerable. She's got an independent nature, and that often leads to her taking the road less traveled in spite of what others would say. It was her combination of strength and vulnerability that really allowed me to feel for her, and fall in love with her character. The one thing that bothered me about her was her tendency to omit the truth in conversations, often just including the details that were pertinent at the time and nothing more. While I could understand her reasons for doing so, it did bother me, especially when it was so blatantly obvious that she certainly knew more than she let on. When everything is said and done though, Evanjalin is a great character.Majority of the fantasy novels I read always culminate in some epic battle of good versus evil (innocent versus corrupt, etc). This one does not, which caught me off guard. At first, I was up in arms about it, but in the end, I realized that it could not have played out any other way. While this book is about the Lumaterans finding their way home with the help of Evanjalin, it is not about an external battle with swords and weapons (though they do appear, mind you). It is, rather, a quieter, more introspective novel - and the battles raging are mostly internal. Finnikin and Evanjalin (and most of the secondary cast) have individual issues to be dealt with, and this story shows us how they do that even as they reclaim Lumatere for their own people.This novel is another remarkably written, complex piece of work from Melina Marchetta. It's one of those novels where you really have to get used to the writing and the storytelling first, but where you'll discover that it's worth it once you've finished. I thoroughly enjoyed Finnikin of the Rock, and am looking forward to continuing the series with Froi of the Exiles this month.

Finnikin of the Rock is a rare gem in an overcrowded genre. I had purchased the series and let it sit on my shelves for over a year, bypassing it every time I went to pick up a new book. Mostly, I thought the name was odd. I should know better. Prettily named books can suck, and oddly named books can be incredible.This story is complex. The first book of the trilogy opens you up to the world by pulling the reader into the setting, firmly establishing not only the geographic aspects of the world, but also constructing the cultural standards that will remain true for the remainder of the series. Better yet, themes and characters created in this first story logically carry onto the later two books. In other words, Finnikin of the Rock is not a one-hit wonder. This book has serious teeth, and the series as a whole is an amazing read and an impressive accomplishment for Melina Marchetta.I would compare Marchetta's writing and intricacy to Kristin Cashore (Graceling). If you loved Graceling, you'll easily fall for Finnikin. This book simply has all the things that a reader can ask for: compelling characters, believable world building, humor, intelligent writing, carefully constructed story, and a nicely paced plot.

A must for any traveler who needs to find any location in Stockholm. Larger scale than country map, more detail than a tourist guide book. If you don't know your way around Stockholm or don't have GPS, don't leave home without it!

The coverage area was too limited. The city bus lines cover more area east to west, so for my purposes it was poor. It didn't live up to it's description.

VERY clear, easy to read, has all the major sights, plus hotels and public transport system. Inset of Gamla Stan is the best I've seen, all streets labeled, even the small ones. Of course, its a very large paper map and a bit awkward for walking around with, but absolutely the best map of Stockholm.

This large map shows everything in great detail with the various points of interest marked and identified (palace,the museums,even some of the hotels) so easy to plan a route. It even shows which streets are pedestrian only which is a great help. The guide books were great at telling me what to see, but not very good at how to get there. The tiny, incomplete maps in the guide books I bought were hard to read and left out a lot of streets as I found out when I got this map. I own several moss books and this is my all-time favorite and the book I go to first for assistance.The book is superbly illustrated with photographs of moss on nearly every page. It is the best-illustrated moss book on the market. And the photos are beautiful! There are a number of pictures of how to use moss in the garden, a section of some famous Japanese moss gardens, and a delightful introduction to 25 common mosses. And the photos are large enough to provide the detail that the reader needs to become familiar with the moss.It’s easy to follow Annie Martin’s step-by-step tutorials on how to design, plant, and care for moss in the garden. Importantly she goes into detail about steps you need to take to determine where moss will grow well in your garden. My husband and I really enjoyed following her suggestions for assessing our yard and were delighted to locate moss that is already growing on our property. I bought the book this winter (I live in Michigan) and using this book we have already started two small gardens in different locations on our property. And we have just begun!

A thorough book that allows even a beginner gardener to start mossin'. I bought this to start adding a moss component to my shady medicinal garden - I wanted info on how to start actually propagating moss rather than just waiting and hoping it shows up - and Annie Martin's book didn't disappoint. After reading it, I came away excited and ready to jump right in and start moss gardening!

Our lawn is going to moss. It is greener, stays greener all season, than our grass ever did. Helped in identifying the several types of moss growing now and how to spread or multiply its area, and take care of it. Glad we found and read this book. Whenever we asked our "spray and run" lawn service about moss, we just got blank stares and no comment. They would only say that we need to get rid of the moss and sod our lawn (very expensive and requires more "spray and run" chemicals). We have one side yard in 100% moss (very shading there) and it is great. The other side is now in process, but may take a year or so -- kind of letting nature do much of the work.

So bought this book and showed it to my sister, and she took it! Then she showed it to a good friend, and the friend took it! Who knows where my original book went - out to the mossin' yonder. So now I am re-buying the book because it is so delightful to read and a visual paradise - thank you, Mossin' Annie, for a book of wonder! Barbara & George Groome

Spoiler Alert: Every book in this series was a 5-star winner ... until the end. Abercrombie's characters come through the pages as fully human, with virtues and weaknesses, regrets and joys, and I could fully relate to their struggles and dreams. I could even sympathize with the twisted torturer, despite his horrible actions. This was a great, rollicking ride ... right up until the end of the trilogy. Abercrombie seemed to ask himself the question: "What would be the most totally dissatisfying ending I could write? How can I leave a bunch of dangling storylines and maybe set up a second trilogy?" Once he had the answer to those questions, that's what he did.

Another average fantasy book that probably sold a ton. It seems like Abercrombie went to the Stephen King school of writing fantasy, making it all up as you go and having pretty absurd plot lines that don't mesh well into . There is a lot in the book, and the series, to talk up as some really good writing. However, the prose and character attitudes get beyond stale after reading several books about them. Glotka is a cripple and is in pain, did he mention that? Logen may be a hero or a devil, did he mention that? Ferro is after vengeance and looms in the background, did he mention that?An even bigger problem is the ongoing "GrimDark" getting grimmer and darker theme, the main them I seem to have taken from the books. Over 300 limbs cut off, 40 heads cut off and the fantasy equivelant of the Saw movie series later, you just get the sense that it all was much about nothing.Which ends up being the summary in the last pages of the book, the lack of a conclusion in a trilogy (which seems to me to be pretty important). You are basically given an ending to set up more books set in the world, like it was all just a soap opera or a video game with upcoming DLC and a season pass.

In regards to the conclusion of the the dramatic journey for many characters in this series, a more apt or succinct summation cannot be written. It seems that, for Abercrombie, dark fantasy is not limited to the nature or source of events happening in his world. As rotten and ready to fall as his world has become, many of the characters that make up his world must be every bit as sordid and impure. It's part realism with a touch of caricature and a generous dollop of artistic license. It also works beautifully.The rising action begins about a third of the way through and never really tapers off. Battles, duels and remarkable events eventually wrap up, but dramatic tension persists until the very last page. Regardless of how you feel about the characters and the specific endings they achieve, there can be no arguing that each character arc is suitably finished. Not all survive. Some are rewarded. Some are punished. Others merely go on. What made the book so eminently enjoyable was the fact that it didn't end with the last big battle or combat sequence. Instead, a non-trivial portion of the book is spent detailing the aftermath of the world-changing events (arguably considered the 'climax' of the main story). This post-mortem examination of the world and it's impact on the remaining characters was entirely welcome and most refreshing.TLDR: Normally, a 600+ page book would take me 10 or 12 days to read. I finished this one in 4. Two thumbs up, all day long.“First it is done to us, then we do it to others, then we order it done. Such is the way of things.”“Banks,” grunted Marovia. “They are made of air. They spin money out of guesses, and lies, and promises. Secrets are their currency, even more than gold.”“I did a good thing, and so, of course, there is a price to be paid.”“It can be a fearsome weapon, patience. One that few men ever learn to use.”“Cleverness is no guarantee of sensible behavior.”

I slogged my way through all three volumes and I am both delighted and frustrated. I read most of the reviews here and agree with the one and two-star ones because they nail the problem: he needs an editor. Badly. If I read about Glotka's teeth one more time . . . . I got it the first time; by the 500th time, it was more than annoying. It was irritating, causing me to lose track of the story. His characters do not really undergo any profound changes across what seems to be a harrowing steam of events. Logen seems to have more injuries than an entire army, yet keeps on trucking. Captain Jezel remains an obnoxious brat from beginning to end. And while Bayaz could have been a much more complicated wizard, he, too, remains rather two-dimensional. On the positive side, the story has great possibilities of interest and involvement for the reader. Sadly, they do not materialize. There's too much repetition of scenes and situations. As I said, an editor could have helped Abercrombie capture what he was after: a thrilling adventure. (We all struggle a great deal to get to the mountains on the trip West and then the mountains seem to disappear from the narrative. Why?) It's writing like that which I find very frustrating - a big build-up to nothing of consequence. The ending leaves everyone pretty much where they started, neither wiser nor more aware. Just doing more of the same old same old. Unfortunate. I had high hopes and kept going because of them. Oh, well. I will not rush to read more of him in the future.

This book was perfect for my trip to Copenhagen. Everything that I wanted to see was in this book. The tips were great and so were the pictures and reviews of restaurants. Very good guide.

As with the only other Sally O'Brian authored-guide that I've used (for Sydney, Australia), this guide leaves much to be desired. Concentrating on trendy hotels, restaurants and bars, this guide gives short shrift to the sights, museums and history of Copenhagen. This guide also dispenses with the section on "Getting There", "Getting Around", and such that used to make Lonely Planets the most useful guide out there. This is more like a Fodors for the pretentious than a good guide to Copenhagen.If this is the new format, I fear for the Lonely Planet series. One would be better off with a "Let's-Go"

This guide was indespensible throughout the travel in Copenhagen and vicinity. Great attention to detail and precise and timely information made it a great asset as a travel guide. Additionally, information on excursions to Sweden and the island of Zealand made this guide a "must-have" when in Denmark.
