When I first opened the package, I was dismayed to see the new cover after reading the reviews on how this edition was not the same as the '91 version. I'm not sure what the reviewers were talking about. Every page is exactly the same. I have the older version from the library and I checked a dozen or so different pages and they were all exactly the same--words, pictures, everything. The only difference seems to be that the few pages at the end that advertise some of his other books are missing. Everything else is the same. Happy Permaculturing!

When I ordered this book (which is copywrited 1997) they sent me a 2011 version that had a different cover (a colored line drawing of a garden in profile and photos of animals and plants on the top and bottom). It has the same title and the same authors, so I assumed it is the newest version of this book. I gave it one star (as explained below) and sent it back. However, I have now found the 1997 version in the library and I can tell you THEY ARE NOT THE SAME! Do NOT buy the 2011 version. It does not have the same content and is not worth the money.However, I have upgraded this review from one star to four stars now that I have seen the book that was supposed to have been sent. I am a retired City Planner, and I am not new to the ideas of permaculture. I played with sustainable designs and alternative energy in the early '80s when I was just out of college (I joined a non-profit dedicated to alternative "life systems" as we called it back then). While the 2011 book reminded me of those early days when my friends and I were full of utopian (but impractical) ideas of how bathrooms could be set up inside greenhouses attached to the house so grey water humidified the room and feed the plants, and grey water could be used to flush toilets by placing the shower at a higher elevation than the toilet), the older (1997) version listed here is much more practical and detailed about permaculture and how it might be applied.So, I do recommend this book as a good introduction to permaculture, although it is lacking in examples where the ideas have actually been applied. If you really want to see these ideas put into action, take a look at "Sepp Holizer's Permaculture" and Darrel Frey's "Bioshelter Market Garden." Good Stuff!!

Not the same book as advertised. I received the 2013 edition instead of the 1997 version. The newer version doesn't have as much content. It looks like what Jenn described. Her post was on March 12, 2012.

Awesome intro! The Designers manual is far more in depth but if you cant afford it, this one is definitely a great buy.

This is a great introduction and overview of permaculture concepts. The book covers a lot of material for initiates to permaculture. It's sets the foundation for further reading and studies for those who want to get serious though one could take the principles learned just from this book alone and be quite successful in my opinion. You learn how the sun, wind and rain, all play an important role in siting structures like homes, sheds, barns, green and shade houses and also in garden and plant selection and placement. The book also covers designing for temperate, tropical and dry-land environments. It explains how interconnected relationships between the land, climate, soils, water, structures, flora and fauna can be fostered to the benefit of all. There are just so many creative ideas and diagrams in this book that it is worth it for those alone. The book is 8 1/4 X 11 inches with small print that fills the pages with valuable information. I want to live in the sub-tropics of Hawaii and enjoyed the coverage in this regard but, the book also left me day dreaming about living the permaculture lifestyle in other areas like the High Desert of New Mexico and the Pacific Northwest of Oregon. This book touches on all the possibilities, from the home garden with a few animals to commercial orchards, forests, animal farms, aquaculture, urban gardens and more. But don't get me wrong, it does not cover these topics in depth, it gives a thorough introduction to these topics and an understanding that one would likely not gain by reading just one book. Also each chapter ends with a list of references for further reading. In addition there are appendices listing useful permaculture plants, such as nitrogen fixing plants. One appendix even breaks it down into useful categories, such as fruit plants and trees for temperate, topical/sub-tropical and dry areas,pest control plants and finally appendices which list hundreds of the plants mentioned in the text by common, Latin, and by species names. The book ends with a glossary of key terms used in the book and few pages about Bill Mollison (One of the founders of permaculture) and the permaculture institute including info on their 72 hour PC Design Certificate Course. This book is highly recommended!

If one were to have only a single book from which to learn the method, this is it! Once you comprehend the principles outlined here, you can obtain any other specific information you need online. Although I recommend "Edible Forest Gardens, Vol. 2" as a perfect companion for "Intro to Permaculture".

This is a recommended book for a permaculture class I'm taking. Written by the founder of permaculture, it's not nearly as in-depth as the Designers Manual but it's a great place to start if you're curious about the root concepts and don't want to spend an arm & a leg to get started.

I loved this book, and so did my 1 and 3-year-old children.Pros:1 Representation: It is difficult to find books that include characters of color as the main characters. Sometimes, the cover of the book will include a character of color, who will then not be dominant in/throughout the story. This book did not disappoint. Although the main character was a person of color, he was just experiencing normal everyday life. That is important for children of color to know that all of the books about their lives are not about slavery/pain/suffering, and it is good for white children to see that children of color are just like them.2. Science: Children absorb information like sponges, but so many children's books don't take advantage of that. This book actually taught my children about gravity and mass. My three year old has impressed people by casually using that vocabulary in several random conversations. I caught my children excitedly replicating the gravity "experiments" from the book. Finally, it also challenged me to be mindful about pointing out when my kids interact with gravity in their everyday life.3: Format: It is difficult to find these topics in Board Book format. I liked that my kids can "read" the book on their own without fear of them damaging it.4: Price: Very affordable! Consistent pricing across the seriesCons:Overall, I love this book and am excited to buy more from the series. My only complaint so far is that there aren't any female main characters yet. Girls like science too!

This book is so adorable!Like many other reviewers of this series, I have noticed a decline in scientific content compared to earlier books such as Baby Loves Quarks. I would recommend the Science for Babies series for those who desire more informative science board books. However, the illustrations in these books are far superior to that series.These books are just so gosh darn cute that I'd want them for the illustrations alone!My daughter loves this series. We read them over and over again! I love this newest addition and highly recommend it.

Considering this is a board book for babies and toddlers, the author has done a nice job taking a complicated subject and bringing it to the level of the reader. There is more scientific content in this book than in the Aerospace Engineering book, which is another nice board book in this series. I'm very pleased with the content in this Gravity book and I do recommend it.

We have all of the Baby Loves Science books now and this one is probably my daughter's favorite because of the "Slurp" sound effect we make and the fact that it has a puppy. Like the others, the science is also sound and presented at a level that a kid can understand (and you can embellish with extra scientific detail if you want). We love that the babies illustrated are diverse and we've also noticed that Bird, Cat, and Apple from previous books in the series make a cameo in the background at the park, which our daughter also loves.

My kid loves this book. I think it's because of the "plop" and "slurp" noises involved briefly in two parts of the book, but no matter, he's going to be a genius by the time he's three with the number of times we read this book (once a day at least, sometimes more -- he chooses it and brings it to me). Cute drawings and it's well tied into how gravity relates to a baby's life. Very cute and informative.

The illustrations are eyecatching, and the narrative is easy to follow. It's already one of my kid's favorites -- and he's now recognizing pictures of the Earth (first seen here) in other books. I considered docking it a star for "encouraging" kids to drop their food on the floor, but my kid was doing that before he read the book. ;)

This is a fantastic book for all kids and parents wanting to instill beginning science concepts early on. It is great, too, that the primary characters are children that display diversity often overlooked in children's books.

Loved that the setting for learning about gravity is around a child's view of the world... themselves or a younger sibling's every day activity in which gravity plays a roll. Excellent way to broaden a child's mind and teach them to become curious.

I am really enjoying these books, and sincerely appreciate the broad overview and inclusive standpoint of the author. I also am very happy with the little bonus book! I definitely recommend this to anyone just starting out with learning about Wicca, as it is a pretty light read. It is a very good introductory set of books.My only negative note would be that the overview says that book one is Candle Magic, when this book is not included in the set.

What I really enjoyed about this book is Chamberlain's emphasis on finding your own oath and there is no one, true way to the practice. Chamberlain gives a great bird's eyes view of the main branches of "traditional" Wicca and the more nebulous "eclectic" form. The guide didn't force me into one direction or another and emphasized finding your own path.

This collection of books reads very smoothly and is very inviting for new practitioners of any form of the craft. It provided details on many subjects, some of which I had yet to think of, all without being overwhelming or difficult to digest. Chamberlain's work has made me feel more comfortable upon my own path and has further inspired my desire to read additional works from other authors.

This is a great, unbias introduction to Wicca. Lisa's words keep you intrigued but do not force you to decide which path is best for you. Additional reading references are provided at the end of each book; a perfect stepping stone to continue your Wiccan research.

I really enjoyed this series. The author shared her knowledge in a way that was easy to understand and consistent, which I appreciate as someone who's just coming into Wicca and the Craft.

All of the information in this book is presented in a way that is easy to understand and very informative. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and what’s more is the author includes a recommended reading list for each subject she covers so that you know where else to look. I’ve purchased some of the books on her lists and haven’t been disappointed yet. I would recommend it to anyone trying to get started in the craft.

This is a great compilation set to learn the foundations of Wicca. I like Lisa Chamberlain’s style if writing. It’s easy to understand and concise. I use this book in my Wicca 101 classes.

Great start for the Wiccan library. Lisa has put it together in a very pleasing manner.
