This is a wonderful book, written with a lot of humor and love. Mr. Allen rides with such clarity that you feel like you grew up with him and had shared and all the experiences he describes. Highly recommended!
Where We Lived is a delightful and honest memoir of Pulitzer-prize winner Henry Allen. Mr. Allen’s life is organized around a genealogy of houses, each with it’s own tchotchkes, smells, and memories. We read of grandparents who cavorted with presidents, as well as a relative, “… a slaver and gunrunner, [who] borrowed from enough townspeople that a mob stormed his mansion, ripping down the damask curtains and leaving it an empty shell after they’d learned by absconded to the Caribbean with their money.†And another, Captain Jim, “who may have been the biggest transporter of slaves in American history.†Equally captivating is the writing itself. Of one house that was sold, he writes, “I’m sure that tarpaper backwoods snowmobile New England has more than a few distant cousins of mine floating face down in the shallow end of the gene pool.†And to top it off, Henry dishes out the most delicious reflections. At the close of his chapter “Starting in 1557,†he muses, “Someday it will be our turn to evaporate like moon jellyfish stranded on a sunny beach. Only our memories or imaginations keep the past alive, and they do such a sloppy job of it.†In short, this book has it all: page-turning stories, well-crafted sentences, and the kind of reflections that make a memoir, well, memorable.
There are few writers of this century, last century, and possibly the next, who have the descriptive prowess of Henry Allen. This book, not a story or plot or tale or anything of the like, is simply a written memory. But it's no memoir, not in the standard sense. Most writers use their words to tell you what's happened, how it happened, where it happened, who it happened to. Those things exist within Where We Lived, but they're inconsequential. Instead, Henry Allen gives you the roots, the spine, the individual drops of life that make things so real, you have no choice but to live them in the fullest sense. His writing is that, sensory. Smells, tastes, sounds, feelings (physical and emotional), and all of them cut straight to the marrow of your body. Every word is chosen delicately, and the result is that there are phrases and - especially - similes within this book that will hit you so hard, you may have to pull away fro the page a moment and let out a sigh. Or a gasp. Or simply walk away because it felt too, too real. The best example of this is later in the book, where Henry Allen talks about summer houses.Good.Lord.He gets it perfectly. The tiny touches, like the most masterful brushstrokes, are practically unseen by the observer and yet they are necessary to create the illusion of reality. Henry Allen is truly a master of his genre, and this book is a culmination of years spent as a journalist, a poet, and an observer of the world.If any part of you has ever felt even a hint of nostalgia, of longing, of bittersweet memory, read this book.
Henry Allen could write about a haircut or mopping a floor and make it an important observation of life, his ability to remind us of simple facts that add to a meaningful life, he tells a good story and that’s why we continue to read books.
Henry Allen took me on a journey back to my own childhood and the places we lived in Maine. By sharing with us his exquisitely written stories and a wry, razor-sharp sense of humor, Henry gave me a great gift with this book. He had me at "a parade of uniforms" when he described the contents of a relative's closet. I mean, who writes like THAT? Seconds after reading that description, I remembered the shed in our old Maine farmhouse where my father left his moldy clothes from Port Moresby several wars ago. And I cried. With Henry's warts and all descriptions of his relatives, I found the courage to look more carefully at my own. Henry understands the disease of alcoholism and has made the commitment to live sober. My thoughts on this are too hopeful and private to share in this review. So thank you Henry Allen for helping me demystify and debunk the "as told to" histories surrounding my marriage and my family. Gotta love this author!
