Review

"...these books would be my first choice as an introduction to the natural environments of these beautiful parts of the world. For those who enjoy well-illustrated field guides, these volumes are a visual treat."--COPEIA (2001)"This is a natural history guide for someone who is really serious about gaining an in-depth understanding of Hawaii's natural environment, animals and plants. It's very complete and very well done...and is the best one that I've seen about Hawaii."--David Taylor in HAWAII ISLAND JOURNAL (October 2000)"If you are comtemplating a visit to Hawaii, this book is sure to make up your mind for you! ...It is obiously well thought out and is well-illustrated, taking a broad view of the attributes of the Hawaiian Isles - Ecotourism, Conservation, Geography & Climate, Parks & Reserves, Flora and Fauna to name but a few. ...excellent photographic plates for quick and easy reference."--SCOTTISH BIRD NEWS (2000)"They neatly fill a niche in the travel market, concentrating on the species most likely to be seen, but also covering a wide range of taxa. ...indispensable to all travellers interested in the natural world."--BTO NEWS

From the Author

Even though I'm a professional wildlife biologist, I've always found it difficult while travelling to identify animals I'm not familiar with and to get good, on-site information about them, unless I'm with an expert guide or willing to lug around several heavy books (a bird book, a mammal book, etc.). I've produced the Ecotravellers' Wildlife Guides to help solve this problem. The books in the series are aimed at travellers with an interest in animals, at people for whom some of the best moments of any trip to places like southern Mexico are unexpected encounters with birds and mammals, reptiles and amphibians, fish and other marine organisms. You will find in these books information on (1) common animals likely to be seen, (2) those that are commonly pointed out by tour-guides and tourist literature, (3) some threatened ones that are, for example, subjects of conservation attention, and (4) some that are of special ecological significance. The books, endorsed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, are real field guides, with extensive color artwork produced by some of the world's top wildlife artists. To give you an idea of the "depth" of coverage, the Tropical Mexico book (which covers the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun region, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco states) includes detailed information and color illustrations on 104 plates of about 250 bird species, 55 mammals, 95 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 150 coral reef fish and other marine organisms - the book truly covers most of the animals you might encounter in this large region. Additionally, initial chapters in each book introduce the country or region, its habitats and climate, its common trees and other plants, and describe conservation projects and ecotourism there, as well as major eco-attractions (national parks, nature reserves, etc.). My hopes are that these books will be put to good use in the field by ecotravellers, will make trips more enjoyable, and will assist in conservation in a small way by helping to educate people about the wildlife and habitats in the countries through which they travel.

This is a natural history guide for someone who is really serious about gaining an in-depth understanding of Hawaii's natural environment, animals and plants. It's very complete and very well done (for the most part) and is the best one that I've seen about Hawai`i. Following the pattern of many other guidebooks, Beletsky's guide is divided into two sections. The first section (204 pages) is explanatory text while the second section (180 pages) consists of color drawings and photographs of Hawaii's flora and fauna. The first half of the book is very comprehensive and is itself divided into basically two parts. Part "A" (6 chapters) covers ecotourism, Hawaii's natural history (including geography and climate), habitats, parks and preserves, getting around, environmental threats, conservation and how to use the book. Part "B" covers Hawaii's animals in just the right amount of detail (and in 6 more chapters). Each chapter explores a major animal group, such as "Amphibians and Reptiles," "Birds," "Mammals," etc. The chapters are well organized and they all include the same sections for each animal group. For example, the chapter on Mammals includes Mammals of Hawai`i, Characteristics of the Mammals, Family Profiles, and an "Environmental Close-up." Each of those sections then includes common subsections. It sounds tedious, but it actually works very well! The second half of Beletsky's guide contains the color plates used for identifying all of the species described in the first half. They are beautifully done. Each animal has a brief description along with its names (common, Hawaiian and scientific), a habitat icon and a habitat description. There are also lots of interesting "factoids" in this guidebook. One of the more interesting "environmental close-ups" is the one on spinner dolphins. They often travel with spotted dolphins and/or tuna in what is called a "mutualistic relationship" to protect themselves against sharks. Spinners feed during the night and spotteds feed during the day, so they trade off watching for sharks. They both like tuna schools around because the tuna are better than they are at sensing the presence of sharks; when the tuna take off, so do they! While this is an excellent guidebook overall, I do have some complaints. The key to the habitat icons isn't anywhere near the color plates or in the index; it's way back on page 77 and very hard to find. Some of the sections are actually contributed by different people and I got tired of reading the same introductory comments about Hawaii's isolation and the evolution of endemic species over and over. The habitat pictures feel like they were just "thrown in" - they aren't captioned very well and they aren't matched to the habitat icons. The plant plates also feel "thrown in" - there isn't a matching chapter on plants in the first half of the book. Fixing those items would make it a "five out of five stars" book.

An absolute must for Hawai‘i visitors who want to get out of the tourist traps and into the remnants of "the real Hawai“i." Beletsky understands the natural history of these islands very well, and is an excellent communicator. Superb illustrations as well.

Such a bargain! I purchased this book "used" for $5 -- and it was brand spanking new -- not even a crease or smudge. This book was invaluable on our recent rip to the Big Island -- plants, birds, fish, marine life, reptiles, mammals -- and nice articles about the ecosystems and natural worlds to be found in Hawaii. It went with us everyday as we explored the island. And became a useful read back in the room at the hotel or on the beach. It does not contain "everything" but is a concise snapshot of most wildlife and vegetation that you will encounter on your travels. Great find!

This is an excellent and somewhat timeless summary of the natural environment of Hawaii. Thoroughly recommended and really good value for money.

I'm moving to Hawaii in February for four months to work outdoors and this book has been invaluable for planning my weekend backpacking trips when Im' not working!

We took several field guides to Hawaii, and this is the one I turned to over and over. On a hike, I took it first. Bird coverage is not fully complete for all possible birds. But we didn't see a bird not in this book. Best short form plant guide we found.

Great story. My girls got an opportunity to meet Ruby. She is a charming woman, and great example. Very good story for kids of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. Demonstrates how the rule of law and determined people who stand up for what is right can change the culture, and continue to improve our great country. It also shows young girls and boys that standing up for what is right is hard to do, especially when many around you are disapproving, even violently opposed to you. But often the hardest things are the right things. And that there are good, decent people (in this example, teachers, federal marshals, judges, friends) who prevail when the (changed) law is on their side, even against norms of the time.

Robert Cole's account of this historic day was good---but I found this one excelled in that it was told from Ruby's viewpoint!I always loved Norman Rockwell's painting of Ruby being escorted to her first day of school by U.S Marshalls ! As a teacher who had her first class in 1962----it was hard to believe the struggle that was going on two years before in New Orleans!!This year -I had the pleasure of meeting Ruby's teacher--Barbara Henry here in Massachusetts!! After my visit with her---"I Googled" to find out more about the grown up Ruby and was delighted to see her meeting Clinton and Obama at the White House-----and having a heart-felt reunion with Mrs. Henry on the Oprah show!!! An inspiring story and a tribute to her extreme faith in God!!

This leveled reader is great for introducing lower elementary students to an historical figure. I use these readers for English Language Learners as well, especially for pre-teaching vocabulary before a unit. This book has real photographs. Sentences are not too long with only 2-5 sentences per page. Perfect for engaging the reader.

This was beautifully written....from the perspective of Ms. Ruby when she was young. Easy for children to understand. I had my spouse even read it, just because he never heard of her....which was no surprise...schools only focus on one African American figure...Dr. Martin Luther King. Since schools do not do their part in expanding on the other people who also help change history....it is my role as a parent to expose my children to the "underexposed" history changers.

Great for differentiating for my second graders. Went well with the "Rookie Biographies" as well as The Story of Ruby Bridges. I have such a variety of readers in the class I need a way for all readers to access the same content. I really appreciate that this had actual pictures as well. It sparked some good discussions with my students and went well with a Social Studies lesson on compassion.

This is a fantastic book, totally age-appropriate for the 5-7 set. As others have noted, the photos show language that is no longer used to talk about African Americans, as well as language that we never okay, but I was able to have a conversation about those words that I *think* set the groundwork for more nuanced conversations down the road.

Ordered it so my 6 year old can write a report for school. We found it an easy read and hit all the key points that should be explained for this level reader.

Important narrative for children and adults to understand the Civil Rights movement in the 50th Anniversary of MKl' s death. This little girl and her family have a story to tell in 2018 where racism is still prevalent in a more covert way. And, as a a woman of European descent, I need to Be Awake.

As comprehensive survey histories go, you can't do much better than this one. It combines detail, analysis, and succinct narratives into an absolutely wonderful reading experience. Best of all, even though I knew the outlines of the history quite well, I learned something on every page and felt enthralled for all 500 pages.America was discovered at the very beginning of the modern age, during what we would call the Renaissance, though many of the explorers resembled medieval pillagers at best; Europe was also moving into the Reformation, of course, which played out in the Americas in its own brutal ways. The Europeans had limited experience dealing with culture clash and shock, so they presumed their superiority over the "savage pagans" and hence treated the natives as slaves and animals, though there were a few humanitarian exceptions. The Spanish arrived looking for slaves and gold, bringing the first wave of microbes that would kill up to 98% of the native populations. Their idea was to extract as much wealth as possible, though a few of them began to establish ranches and farms. Interestingly, the template for the conquistadors were the Canary Islands, which they essentially devastated - killing virtually all the natives, destroying the entire natural ecology, and installing themselves as slave plantation owners.About 100 years later, the British began to attempt to colonize what became Virginia. After several catastrophic failures and wars with the Spanish, they succeeded in establishing a crude colony, based on indentured labor for the price of passage and tobacco plantations; it was loosely Anglican. England at that time was in social upheaval, so many wished to depart with hopes of a better life. This soon changed when New England was established, which was largely Puritan though with many other strict protestant sects. While relatively autarkic economically, once the highly profitable sugar plantations were established in Barbados and its nearby islands, there was finally a market for New England goods, stimulating the economy for fish and other staples that the West Indies could not produce for itself. The sugar plantations also served as template for slave plantations in the deep south. The French established trading posts in Canada, working more cooperatively with the Indians because of the sparseness of French immigration. Most of their trade was in furs, which the Indians supplied in exchange for guns and metal tools. There were also Dutch and Swedish colonies in the mid-Atlantic, soon to be absorbed into the British Empire, which continued its incipient war with the French until the 18C.Each colony had its own character, such as Quaker Pennsylvania under the Penn family, a kind of family franchise that boomed for a number of decades and was surprisingly tolerant. Most fascinating to me was the establishment of Rhode Island, a tolerant oasis for religious experimentation, by Roger Williams when he was exiled from Massachusetts for religious ideas that bordered on fanaticism.Throughout the volume, Taylor is very critical of the behavior of the colonists, who in spite of many sincere efforts to treat the natives with dignity and respect essentially wound up taking whatever they wanted. As a result, surviving east coast Indians were either pushed west or simply massacred. Many of the tribes that emerged were actually amalgams of disease survivors, hence relatively new, though larger groupings, such as the Iroquois nations, remained players for longer periods. Of course, there were exceptional adaptations as well: when the Plains Indians acquired guns and horses, they expanded their populations and became formidable adversaries as newly established warrior cultures, though could never effectively unite; they also remained dependent on white men for gun powder and metal working.Taylor goes into many of the cultural details of all parties involved, particularly the various Indian tribes. This is very fun, but due to the format of a comprehensive survey is superficial at best. The bibliography is also outdated, given that the book was written about 20 years ago. If I have a serious criticism, it is the lack of a sum-up chapter at the end, bringing together the complex strands that Taylor describes so well. This is an unusually fun read for a survey history. Taylor does a great job at pointing out the brutal underbelly of what transpired, no holds barred, but also in historical context of what the protagonists were thinking. Recommended warmly.

This book presents a fascinating and detailed look at the settlement of the Americas. It covers the early Spanish and French explorers, the horrors committed by the Conquistadors, and an interesting perspective on the differences between the English colonists in Chesapeake (Virginia) and Massachusetts. Ever wonder why the Spanish colonized Central America, while the French operated in Canada, and the English colonized the Atlantic states? This book tells you. American Colonies also gives you a very detailed view of the history of the various Indian tribes both before and after the Europeans arrived. Until I read this book I never realized that Indians farmed corn and beans to such a great extent. Not only that, but the farming methods of the Indians on the Atlantic seaboard was far superior to the methods used by the early colonists. Much of the land used by the Massachusetts colonists for farming was first cleared by Indians who perished in astounding numbers by disease. The book also details the history of slavery in the Western Hemisphere, and describes why natives snared into slavery perished, and why slaves brought from Africa survived. If you enjoy reading about history of the Americas, this is a book you should read. Be mindful that its coverage goes way beyond the American colonies. It is really about the history of Central America, the Caribbean, the United States and Canada, focusing on the period between 1492 and 1820.

Alan Taylor surveys the history of settling of North America from its earliest inhabitants (scholarship as of 2000, could use an update) to the formation of the United States in a very thoughtful, non-partisan manner. This work is full of fascinating details. For example, in its earliest forms in North America, slavery was not initially based on race but turned into racial chattel slavery in a very particular manner for a very particular reason. The Native Americans in California had a very sophisticated way of managing and shaping the "natural" environment. Taylor gives an excellent treatment of subjects that are not commonly treated in surveys, such as the differences between French, Spanish, and English settlements the causes and consequences of the Pueblo revolt, and how different Native American groups had cleverly managed to achieve a modicum of coexistence and balance with the colonial powers...until the Seven Years War, which then eventually led to the near total destruction of Native societies.

I am not a historian, however, this book seemed to cover a huge amount of ground in reasonable depth primarily from the perspective of the affected natives while providing a good amount of information about the pressures that led to colonialism.

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

Anyone concerned about EMP natural or otherwise should read. One thing I did not see is that if not natural there is still the threat of a second emp after a short while to take out machinery that has been brought out of the cages and in operation.

There's nothing in this book that you couldn't find in articles on the internet. Very little detail on the construction of faraday cages.

This was very basic and not helpful, I got more information just reading online.

Minimal book with minimal info. Contact link for future notifications did not work.
