A wonderful resource I will keep in my library and return too often. I especially am thankful that at the end of each prayer the occasion is noted. Many of these were written for specific texts of scripture that were about to be studied in class. I plan to consider using some of these prayers when I am leading a study of those particular texts. Also, the final section "Praying the Christian Year." I found those prayers useful last year and utilized them as prayers with our church staff during our meetings.

When I bought this book years ago, I had the opportunity to talk with Walter Bruggemann about writing sermons and rayers and he said that he found it more work to write a prayer than a sermon, to which I say amen. These prayers are stirring in their meaning and passion. I begin each day reading one and it makes the start of the day so much better.

Wonderful book of prayers! Just reading the forward to the book is so very rich as are the prayers. They are so thought provoking. These prayers have been very inspiring and have helped me to pray in a different way. This book of prayers is a real treasure.

Yes this an excellent book, no doubt about it. However my review is directed at the Kindle edition. Each prayer fits on one page, regardless of the length. This means that some display in very, very small type. And there is no way to increase the font size. The font size feature of the Kindle doesn't work with this digital document. At one point I had to reach for a magnifying glass. It would have been nice to know this ahead of time as then I would have bought the actual paper book. It would have been way more useful.

In my searching for a new daily book on prayer I found Walter Brueggemann'sBook. I can only say he has opened my heart to the deep new look at the Magnitude of God. Jesus tells us to come to Him as little children This is for our faith and trust These prayers have brought me to a glimpse of GOD I have to read them two and sometimes three times each day To receive the depth of the prayer Thank you

I truly enjoyed and was blessed by the prayers captured, recorded, and then published for all to read. Of interest is the prayers captured and written for and about September 11, 2001. Great work for my personal library

This book is a very thoughtful and inspirational collection of prayers that encompasses the love of God and Jesus, and how our lives are impacted by them. His theological ideas and thoughts resound in the words, and I found it very fulfilling, thought provoking, and inspiring. I would recommend it highly.

This has become my favorite book of prayers. Selected prayers from years of beginning classes with a meaningful prayer. These have been taken from the classroom and placed in an anthology for our blessing. The formatting leads one to read them with the cadence and focus that was reflected as he first prayed them in the classroom.

Sparks fly between the two from the first. Eversley is deeply attracted and Lily despises him. She judges him wrongly, but Eversley knows this and uses it to his advantage repeatedly. Lily could not understand her problem with Eversley. Thinking that the man was “getting under her skin” and that “he might burrow so deep that she wouldn’t be able to get him out” troubled Lily. He was her boss, and she was an employee, so any relationship was out of the question. It is almost painful to watch how hard Lily tries to do the right thing.Lily is the first woman that Eversley could not impress. Readers will enjoy watching them spar back-and-forth all the while falling in love so completely that the outcome seems inevitable; however, the reader will guess right up to the end whether marriage is possible. Lily is stubborn; she tries her very best to keep true to her personal values and work ethics at the same time. Eversley does his charming best to undermine her at every turn. He behaves like Lily is “precious and valuable.” When doing so, it makes Lily “feel things she shouldn’t.” This complicates everything, including Lily’s ability to concentrate and do her job well.Readers will not be disappointed with this sincere, genuine love story and its delightful ending that will tug at your heartstrings.DISCLAIMER: I received an "Advanced Reading Copy" (ARC) of this title in exchange for leaving an honest review.

Again a wonderful book from one of my favorite author. Re visiting the characters of previous books and the new one is amazing. A must to read. I will suggest to read the first book of thise serie to understand better the characters. It will make you want to read the entire first serie.

I write this in every review, but it is true, I loved the book. Janelle Daniels is one of my favorites author and Copper Kings is a must read series. Chase and Lily's love story was so sweet. There was also a little drama and suspense. One of the reason's I love Janelle's book is her writing. I always feel like I am part of the story. The way she writes each character just captures you. Cannot wait for the next book in this series!

Chase was born wealthy and entitled. Lily wasn't. Everything she has she earned. Chase left behind the "entitled" part of his past and earned his own fortune. He came to Promise Creek to work with Lucas for the opening of the mine and leave. That was before he met Lily. Intreagued from the start, he wants to know everything about her. Lily tries to avoid him but finds it increasingly difficult. Chase hears a miner speaking in a very crude manner to Lily and fires him on the spot. Blaming others for his own faults, he kidnaps Lily to force Chase to pay for his humiliation.

Western Promise gives readers a rewarding much awaited love story. Great plot and characters! Can't wait for the next book in the series! Love this series, just as I did Miners to Millionaires.

Great story line, very deep characters, The entire book was well done. Thank you for another great read.A must read, I won't say more, suspense makes it better.

I was so excited for book 2 and it definitely lived up to my expectations! I loved Lily and Chase's story! Janelle Daniels is one of my new favorite authors!

Lily Reed and Chase Eversley come from two different worlds, but they're forced to work together to get the mine up and running. With strange mishaps occurring, it'll be a miracle if they don't strangle each other before the grand opening. Western Promise sweeps you off your feet and takes you on a journey you won't soon forget!

This is one of the best beginner songwriting books it gets to the point on how to write a song and how to use your lyrics to move a song along I wish this would have been my first book I would have saved a lot of money this book explain it so well .

This is the best, most human presentation of the Transcendentalist I have read & I am an avid fan of Margaret Fuller. This book really made all the personalities come alive with strengths and weaknesses. Highly recommend.

Do NOT buy the Kindle edition of this book! Underscore... Emphasize in italics and boldface!To begin with, it's made from the early edition, which is rife with factual errors, reportedly corrected in a later edition. It is full of uncorrected garbled-type typographical errors -- unpardonable in a retail ebook.It also lacks a proper cover, using the title page for a cover, which I begrudgingly accept from free, public-domain stuff but not in a $12 ebook from a mainstream publisher. When I buy a retail book from a bookstore, I expect it to be the current, corrected edition -- fully proof-read -- and to have a cover on it. I expect no less from an ebook. Raspberries to Simon and Schuster for producing it and to Amazon for selling it.Simon and Schuster are not alone. Many mainstream publishers are selling ebooks that are the equivalent of charging hardback book prices for a loose pages of an uncorrected proof run off on the copier at the Post Office. If publishers expect us to pay full-price money for ebooks and not steal them off the internet, they owe us a quality product, not some poorly formatted, hastily thrown-together, out-of-date edition.

AMERICAN BLOOMSBURY is a study of the "genius cluster" centered in Concord, Massachusetts, 1835 - 1888, beginning with the arrival of Ralph Waldo Emerson and ending with the death of the last of the neighborhood's classic writers in the neighborhood. With the inheritance from a short-lived first wife from a wealthy family, Emerson largely supported friends like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, the Alcott family and Margaret Fuller as they launched their careers. They shared Transcendentalism and a passion for intellectual pursuit. As in most close-knit communities, they had their intrigues, jealousies and fall-outs. The hope and beauty of a New England spring day is reflected in their early ambitions and again in their salutes to one another at the end of their lives. The themes they drew on, the events they witnessed at home and abroad, and the impact of the Civil War articulate the greater American experience of the 19th century.Though I'm very familiar with the writers' works, I hadn't studied their lives closely and this was a good general introduction, often full of surprises. Cheever vividly evokes the personages and setting with a storyteller's skill. I did not realize how fully she developed them until I felt the pang of loss as their mortality set in. This is by no means exhaustive biography or history; in fact, Cheever moves through it rather breathlessly. Her style is intended for a very general audience, not an academic one.The book is not perfect. Although she moves from 1835 to the last death, of Louisa May Alcott who is only a child at the outset, Cheever chooses to order her information around themes or events in their lives, which do not necessarily flow chronologically. She kind of swirls around and around as she moves through the 19th century. In one chapter, even one paragraph, she may bounce back and forth between several years. The coming of the railroad is experienced more than once, though from slightly different perspectives. Poor Margaret Fuller drowns at least 3 times. Sometimes you are left asking, now when exactly is this happening? Her chapters are quite short, 3 - 5 pages, which makes for a rather breakneck pace through the facts. She provides a time line, plenty of research notes and citations and an extensive bibliography at the back of the book that help answer questions that may arise.

I had high hopes for American Bloomsbury after hearing Susan Cheever interviewed on NPR. Some of what she wrote was interesting and new to me, but overall the book was not satisfying. It was interesting to read biographical details, especially of Thoreau and Hawthorne, but I felt that she was just scratching the surface and not really delving into her subjects' lives or works. She also has the annoying habit of adding uninteresting tidbits about her visits to the authors' homes or towns which don't really add anything to the narrative. I don't know enough about these figures to know what I was missing, but that didn't stop me from feeling that there was more to know.

The failures of fact in this book- on purpose or not- turn this into more fiction than fact; even the works the author cites don't hold up many of the claims in that book that they are supposedly included to buttress. With so many journals and letters available from the time you'd e better off reading those instead of this book if you want a sense of the people written about in this book.

This book is a gossipy book about the human (common to most people) and sometimes flirtatious behavior of the transcendentalists. It misses their greatness as writers, thinkers and social activists who were far ahead of their time.I have read about 6 books on this group in the past few months and this was the weakest. It is not horrible and it has some interesting anecdotes but it lacks "gravitas" for a group that clearly deserves it.David Mulligan

Susan Cheever brings a fantastic idea for a book with an extremely inventive design to almost perfect fruition. Her fascination with the intertwined lives of Alcott, Emerson, Fuller, Hawthorne, and Thoreau is contagious. I appreciated that she lent her own voice and sensibility to the content-it brought to life these nineteenth century authors with ageless human dilemmas. Cheever is clear in her beginning note the structure of the book will repeat events, from different perspectives. It is this aspect I felt developed less well than I had hoped. For a relatively short book with very short chapters, I found some of the repeat visits to a topic more tedious than illuminating. The best part: I learned a lot from a very fast and enjoyable read. The worst part: Iwanted to know more. Of course, that is not altogether a bad thing.
